More buffaloes on the way

Anyone complaining that this enhances our "country" reputation, I think has it wrong. A little over 100 years ago, all that you see around you in Oklahoma City was empty fields. I think the buffalo and all of the other "country" things you see around town are a great reminder of how far we've come and how little time it's taken us to accomplish building something where literally, there was nothing.

Those of us who have ancestors who ran in the land runs or were here beforehand can look back at the roots of Oklahoma and be amazed how far we've come. It's really pretty amazing.

Just to clarify my statement of making us look hickish - I meant because of the absolute ridiculous idea of dressing up and painting bison. Not because of the bison themselves, again I have no problem with them, it's the retardedness of dressing them up and then fingerpainting them like a 5 year old. It's gawdy, it's tacky, and it takes us back centuries to where we might as well be living in the fields we used to have. Who is going to take someone serious when standing next to a buffalo with any of these designs??

I am becoming quite a fan of these smaller than life buffaloes. The B.C.Clark one looks like Master P. The Dr. is priceless. As a group they start to come together. I just hope they get them off the street soon. I thought they were going to herd them all into some facility to showcase them.

Construction on the I-235 (Broadway Extension, aka Centennial Expressway) is moving along rapidly. It appears this is one of the fastest construction sites in the history of ODOT. I've seen crews out there 24 hrs on 3 shifts. Here are some pics of the buffalo/scissortail murals on the underpass at 36th.

I like the way that looks. It reminds me of cave paintings......not quite the same feel as an almost lifesize buffalo wearing a Santa suit.

I'm with Karrie on this one. I really like the simplicity of the design, and certainly don't mind the buffaloes at all, nor the scissortail flycatchers.

Texas has the monopoly on stars, and while we could have done something different, this certainly says "Native Oklahoma" without going so far as wheat and tractors.

While it's not the most visionary design ever put on concrete highway barrriers (think Denver), it's certainly better than no graphic at all.

I have nothing against buffalos in general, just tacky painted fiberglass ones. The 36th St. Underpass is looking great! And they are moving shockingly fast...

Oklahoma is still mired in the previous century . . . early in the previous century . . . in highway and bridge design. Too bad. Those walls could just as easily contain some great public art . . . non-cowboy-and-indian public art for a change.

I honestly think it's fine. The only harsh critics I've seen of Oklahoma is it's own residents. This doesn't portray "hickishness". Heck Texas has more hick images prominently displayed all over Texas and yet 24+ million people live in Texas, not to mention the tons more tourists they see a year. Many of which are touring because of the "cowboy" lifestyle.

Let's face it, it's not like these murals have indians shooting arrows at the buffaloes and cowboys riding horses. It's buffalo's, and we're a plains state. It looks fine and ads much needed public art.

Calling it art doesn't make it art . . . . the people that designed and built this highway are engineers and contractors not artists . . . it isn't art metro.
