A modern refinery should be odor free. If there is an odor, someone is not doing their job.

That may have been true back when we had a functioning EPA.

It's a brave new world now.

TBF, my family is originally from Cushing, so I think I can say that it and maybe Wynnewood and maybe Ponca are just a few of the places where residents don't feel quite at home without the odor of burning chemicals in the air. There just aren't a lot of places that would love to see a new refinery and Cushing at one time had multiple refineries. Growing up, I remember going down to one of those old refineries with my grandparents and climbing all over an abandoned locomotive there. I'm sure I had all of my shots.

Have you been to Midland-Odessa? I drove through there once and stopped to get gas and holy moly the smell was just something I can’t describe. It wasn’t pleasant. It wasn’t horrible. But I was wasn’t a fan of it though I’m sure I would get used to it. If you have been is it anything like that? FWIW I’ve never been to Cushing but I’ve thought about driving there for the hell of it to see it.

Wichita used to have a smell near the WSU campus that was a combination of odors from the stockyards and beef packing plant AND the Derby oil refinery, depending upon which way the wind was blowing.

I also recall spending a night in Lubbock and waking up to eau de feed lot.

When I’m driving on I-40 west of Amarillo I always have to brace myself for the stockyards they have over there. It generally doesn’t last too long, but boy does it hit you.

Try driving through Hereford Texas. It's called Hereford for a reason. IIRC it's about 8 or 10 miles of feed lots and cattle.

Kia just launched a new Canoo-like van called the PV5.

Similar to Canoo, it's a modular system where the back half can be switched from passenger van, to cargo, to pickup.

Mercedes, Ford, and Rivian are already in production with a whole fleet of electric vans. The Chinese have tons of them now, although our laws prohibit they sale here, but that will eventually change.

This is exactly why I was super skeptical of Canoo from the start. You have these very sophisticated, established brands that were always going to beat them to market, so why would anyone take a flyer on a start-up company when so many of the new EV manufacturers never make it more than a few years? And in the end, they never even came close to producing vehicles.
