I'm just wondering why you might think that is a forgotten song. It is very well known.

Probably depends on your age. Here is one that popped up in my Youtube feed that I had forgotten about but remembered once I heard it again. I thought that it was older than 1998 but it wasn't. It has an interesting story behind it's lyrics. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Way_(Fastball_song)

Back in the pre-internet days, I had a whole list of songs I loved, but I had no idea who the artist was or the name of the song. As soon as I got online in late 1997, I started trying to figure them out and when the OG Napster came online, I spent countless hours trying to find those songs. This was a song I had on a cassette and I captured it on the radio an only had maybe the last 2/3 of the song. This was one of the most challenging to find because even though I probably came across it many times, I thought I was familiar enough with ELO to rule out them being the artist. The same thing happened with Lindsey Buckingham's "Trouble".

When Trouble was first on the radio I initially thought it was John Lennon. To my ear it was similar to stuff on Double Fantasy, but I was confused because I actually owned Double Fantasy (as a 13 year old making his first, Columbia-House-fueled forays into rock n roll) and I knew this song wasn’t on it. It was also a year after Lennon’s death, so new music wasn’t likely to be forthcoming. After I heard it a few times I heard a DJ identify it during either an intro or an outro and finally understood it was someone different than Lennon. I knew Fleetwood Mac, but wasn’t yet familiar with Buckingham specifically.

It’s odd to recall how life was experienced pre-internet. Knowing things took real effort, and often took a lot of elapsed time to boot. But once you spent the time and energy, you actually truly understood a topic more than today’s information overload allows. I won’t lie; often I miss it. Today we have too much information and not enough wisdom. Sorry for the tangent.

Young adult offspring: "Mom, look at this (fill in the blank, something on TikTok). I wonder how that works."

Me: "Doesn't it occur to you to research it so you can educate yourself on what you're seeing?"

Young adult offspring: "Um, no. Why would, I do that? It's just a TikTok."

So I quickly research it and share the information gleaned. By this point the offspring has moved on and pretty much doesn't even remember the top of the conversation.

Every time I hear the opening bars of Toad the Wet Sprocket's "All I Want", I think it's Buckingham's "Trouble", even though "Trouble" has some babbling lyrics from the first beat.

I had a few complete Ah-ha moments when I bought a CD for maybe 1-3 songs and discovered that every song on there was one I loved, but had no idea that was the artist. The ones that come to mind were the greatest hits albums of Little River Band, Dan Fogelberg and England Dan & John Ford Coley.

Yep. That’s how I found some of my favorite album cuts. The best songs don’t always make singles. Also found lots of artists/songs via soundtracks and compilations, or even the tiny reviews in the back of Rolling Stone and Spin. College radio charts. On and on…discovery was so much different back then. These days it’s an algorithm.
