This has to be a great off season/signing class. If things implode next few weeks it will be a total gut job & rebuild. The defense still can’t cover any decent receivers- we need a couple lockdown corners that are taller than me for starters.
I'll disagree with your RB assessment as Xavier Robinson does appear to be a good back. He has good feel, strength, and has good hands out of the backfield.

Not sure I agree on our corners. Eli Bowen was a true freshman who played really well even if he gave up some tough ones against LSU. OU also shut down some other really good WRs like Bama's Ryan Williams. Next year's starting corners are already on campus.

Robinson may turn out to be pretty good but we haven't seen enough yet. Tatum has talent but can he figure out how to hold onto the ball? Of course nobody looks good behind an atrocious line so I'm not too worried about RB's if we can fix the rest. We've always been fine there. But we could use a feature back or two like we've had many times in the past. I don't know if any of these guys are going to NFL as of now.

OU had one signature win this year and that was Bama, Tulane is quality/decent but it's not like they're that great. How about the end of the Mizzou game? We gave up plenty of big time plays to receivers this year. CB has been a weakness for awhile now. Eli Bowen is pretty good but he's not out jumping guys that are 6' 2" + or physical.

I'm just staying there's a lot of issues between where we are now & truly being competitive. Even if we were fully healthy this year I don't think we get more than 8-9 wins max which wouldn't have been bad given the intro season to SEC but still a long ways off from where the top few teams are.

Next year will be make or break, this year is going to hopefully go down as a mulligan. Hopefully they can kill the portal and keep the class intact overall.

We need a few things to work perfectly next year:
The incoming players that we expect to come here need to not change their minds.
The current players worth keeping need to stay put.
We need to get a few major wins in the portal.
All those guys need to pan out as expected.
The new OC has, HAS, to get the offense to gel and play as a unit.
The replacement LBs and DL have to be solid.

All that in total is a tall order. And the total will be necessary to make a big difference. I expect improvement next year over this year but I don't know how much. We should have a much better idea after the portal period and spring training.

I really hope we’re able to at least retain some of the good players that we do have. We’re about to find out just how serious we are about being competitive in an NIL world.

We got Fasusi after much speculation and visits to UT & A&M last couple weeks. Definitely needed that one.

And there goes Arnold, dang. Highest ranked recruit in OU history and we totally screwed it up. I would assume Mateer is coming with Arbuckle at this point but no idea. Regardless we don't have a QB right now for next year.

No he hasn't announced yet, hopefully with his Dad that gives him better chance to stay. Regardless he's not SEC ready & we've got to get a proven winner from portal now who would presumably be the starter.

Didn't quite work out for Jackson. I hope he can find a good spot and continue to improve. Seemed like a really nice guy.

Wish him the best, we put him in just about the worst situation anyone could be put into. You certainly can't blame him. Maybe he's a total bust or maybe it's the program. I guess we'll find out with his next stop. I still think he's got the talent just not the coaching and right situation.

Did he get downgraded? At one point he was way up there. Even so he’s still in the top several all time recruits I’d say but perhaps not #1. Huge dissapoinment irregardless.

He was very highly regarded. He could very well end up with a contender. And if so I'll be anxious to see what he can do with a top o-line and group of receivers/RBs around him.

He's definitely not the highest ranked recruit. I believe Rhett Bomar and Adrian Peterson were 1 and 2 in the country when they signed with OU. Arnold was in the teens in most services.

Everyone here is saying OU screwed Jackson up, but he might just be a bust. There's no question he was put in a bad position, but most of his turnovers were his fault and he really struggled to see the field. He'd have guys running open and he just couldn't see them. Maybe he goes elsewhere is good, but I suspect he's more than likely an under average college QB. It seems like Mateer would be a big upgrade.

    I wish Jackson well.

Really hard to tell if he was any good given our general offensive woes.

But OU (and other schools) have had a long list of 5* QB's that were complete busts. So much of quarterbacking is making quick decisions and executing when the heat is on. Even the highest levels of high school can't simulate that, so QB's in particular are always a crap shoot.

Cale Gundy was discussing his view of Jackson today. He noted that as the season progressed Jackson developed a lot of bad habits that got worse as things went along. Part of that is probably because the defenses beat the crap out of him most of the season and he got paranoid. That's not uncommon in offenses with horrible QB protection.

Very well said. For every Patrick Mahomes, you'll have a hundred Rhett Bomars.

And not uncommon to develop bad habits as a young QB when you don't have a QB coach

you don't have "a hundred" of QB's like rhett bomar that played in the NFL ..

    this is correct ..

and he could not get out of the bad habits when later in the season the protection improved a ton ..

I have seen numerous articles and then people on the radio acting like he's prime to run the table with a contender. And while I agree it wasn't all his fault a lot were. fumbling without someone touching him against missouri. throwing into double coverage against Tennessee. JA definitely has some running ability and could read the zone read. But the RPO game and coverages seemed to have him in a fog. the last 3 games of the season he had time in the pocket and there were people at times open enough to try and it just didn't happen.

maybe he'll prove us wrong but I don't see how he's going to be super successful. I hope I'm wrong.

I think everyone expects a pretty large exodus to the portal but OU will hit the portal hard to get some of that back. Also is this the first year of the smaller roster? I can't remember the exact numbers.

Yea only 18 guys in the class, think we had 27 last couple years or around there.

They will have to have major portal success at this point, we’re 10th in SEC team ranking with an already bleak offense and not much talent coming in at this point.
