There are a lot of articles and studies about the interest generated in live sports when sports betting is in the mix. The Kansas KSU game tonight wont be real interesting to a lot of people but if they have KSU +12, or are making in game wagers or have it on a three team parlay (or whatever), it is different engagement from the person who is not a fan of those teams. I know a lot of people don't want that to be the case but there is no doubt it is. The NFL battled the gambling industry for years and then saw the way fantasy moved the sport and now we have constant ads for it - the NFL and all the other sports rights holders know the impact of people having a stake on the game.

Is it addictive? Absolutely. Are there people whose lives get ruined by it - no question there are. But since the S.Ct decision in 2018, the train started really rolling down the tracks and it is a full steam locomotive at this point.

I saw a study that noted that in blowout type games the percentage of fans who have no wager and are not affiliated with one of the teams will typically switch off the event. But those who have a wager on the game stay engaged at a much higher percentage. That is all factored into things like ESPN now has ESPNBet as an example and has shows and segments dedicated to sports betting. There used to be gasps when Al Michaels would make a comment when calling a game that implicated sports betting - he was sorta famous for that. Turns out he was ahead of his time in how things moved.

This is an excellent podcast about sports betting by Michael Lewis, the greatest business author of all time.

    https://www.pushkin.fm/podcasts/agai...the-rules-fans

    Some key points:
    • 80% of sports betting in the U.S. is controlled by Draft Kings and Fan Duel
    • It takes over a billion (and more likely 3 billion) to compete, due to their tech and marketing
    • Their huge advantage came from having millions of fantasy sports players on their sites (estimated at over 50 million in the U.S. as a whole)
    • They have been able to convert those fantasy players into direct sports betters to a very large degree in the states where sports betting has been legalized (which is now most of them)
    • The biggest casinos are even severely disadvantaged against DK and FD
    • Even in states limiting sports betting to the tribes (like the Seminoles in Florida), they cannot compete with FD and DK
    • Betters can easily circumvent the crappier tribal platforms by having friends bet on their behalf in other states where the tribes don't control
    • Many of the tribes end up partnering with DK and FD due to their dominance, tech, and marketing
    • Effectively, even if we limit sports betting to the tribes here in OK, a lot or most of the money is going to go to FD and DK
    • Those two sites are very sophisticated in inducing bettors to make very bad bets, such as parlays which are far more profitable than even casino games
    • There is now a secondary market where you can sell an existing bet you've made to another gambler

I've said it before: I do not see the value to society of making this legal here. I also realize it is going to happen anyway.

You can bet on sports in Oklahoma. No, you can't go to the local casinos or similar and place bets but you can online which is much more accessible anyway. One thing I haven't researched, and maybe I should, is if there is any legal repercussions for betting online in Oklahoma.

It is against the law to bet on sports in Oklahoma, online or otherwise.

Have you actually tried to do it through one of the big sites? They are supposed to block states where this is not yet legal, and I believe it is pretty effective based on IP addresses. I realize there are work around to that, too. But still illegal.

And of course, people have been betting on sports here illegally for decades through bookies.

On the Sports Animal The Fat Jack talks all the time about people in Oklahoma driving to the Kansas border to place their bets.

Yeah I think about the only way to do it without driving close to the Kansas Border is to use a VPN, which is pretty easy but also illegal.

You can use apps like Sleeper to place parlays on players. But you cannot bet on game outcomes.

You can bet easily on Bovada. However, it can be a bit cumbersome to get your money back sometimes

Thank you. This morning I thought maybe Zi had said too much already. Since I have lots of time now I seem to do that too much. But as you said it's really pretty easy.

I think they need to approve and regulate sports betting in Oklahoma. I’m a libertarian at heart so let people do what they wanna do. The state can also generate revenue from it.

I'm not typically much of a gambler but I was going to bet on an OU game or 2 this year because the spreads were ridiculous (so I thought). Fortunately OK saved me from myself

From my experience, the people who really get themselves in gambling trouble are betting sports, not playing at casinos.

People who follow sports often think they have some knowledge that will give them a betting advantage. But in the end, the only one that wins are the massive companies luring people to throw their money away.

Also, traditionally and into the future, sports betting is something you can do remotely (bookies, off-track betting, apps) which allows a much bigger flow of money than having to drive to a casino and sit at a machine or table.

I do wish they'd ban advertising for it like they do cigarettes though. I'm so sick of odds and bets infiltrating every corner of my sports television watching.

It's already bled into sports programming itself.

ESPN has shows about sports betting and is now incorporating betting lines and betting info into sporting events.

I've never liked gambling but I fear for the thousands (millions?) who are going to end up getting themselves in trouble.

If I never saw a betting, alcohol or prescription drug ad again I'd be happy.

Yes. For this and Pharmaceutical Companies. No need for either.

The US and New Zealand are the only countries in the world that allow big pharma to advertise on TV. It's horrible, and the underlying economics of big pharma are also horrible (at least here in the US).

Betting on college football against the spread is ridiculously hard. I'm in a pick 6 league (pick 6 games out of 15 ATS)... of the 14 weeks of the game, there were only 55 times where someone went 6-0, out of nearly 600 players. The odds makers know what they are doing.

The psychology of it all is what makes it so lethal.

I'm a pretty educated football fan, and so many times I've seen a spread and thought, "Man, that's ridiculous. I should put a bunch of money down and make a killing." And I'd say 75% of the time, I was dead wrong. That's an easy way to lose a ton of money, especially because the same psychology causes you to think you can and should recoup any loss by doubling down on another bet.

I've become somewhat fascinated by white-collar crimes, and one of the biggest drivers is someone doing something illegal in an attempt to dig themselves out of a huge sports betting hole.

It is. And if I do it's very little and just for fun.
But I understand the draw. There's been a number of times I would have bet one way or another on a really out there OU spread but didn't. Then they cover and I wish I had got second mortgage and bet it. But of course if I ever did that I'd end up on the wrong side.

lol, especially if you take one of their "bonuses."

made that mistake once and had to bet the value of the bonus like 30x so that it could be "unlocked" and withdrawn.

People get themselves in trouble in the stock market all the time. Commodities trading, day trading, crypto, etc. Looking for a quick buck and the thrill of the chase is part of the human self-destructive natural action.

What was it that Michael Jordan supposedly lost so much money shorting on that he had to sell the Hornets to cover his loss?
