Thread: Fair Weather Friend

  1. #1

    Film Exchange Fair Weather Friend

Fair Weather Friend brewery has opened at the NW 2nd and Klein development; just west of Sunshine Cleaners/Stonecloud.

It's a great setting with a big, grassy outdoor area and a large taproom. They have a pool table in the backroom.

They serve pizza but for now it's just limited to Friday-Sunday.

We went by on Sunday and the beer is really solid, nothing mind blowing aside from their sour, but that's expected at opening. The pizzas was outstanding, they had pepperoni and margarita right now, it was flying out of the oven. I believe they sold out around 5pm on Sunday.

They posted a job opening on Facebook a couple days ago looking for a full time pizza cook, so I am assuming they are going to extend that operation once it is staffed up.

Wife and I went this past week. Really impressed with their beer. Great space. We'll go back, for sure

And the owners are so nice too! We went the day before they opened just checking the place out and I can't wait to go for reals. The outdoor space is amazing.

This place is definitely worth a visit, I've already been twice since it opened.
Interested to see how often they rotate taps or if there selection is more focused on staples.
One of the good bartenders from Prairie went to work there.

Anyone know what is going to go into all the empty buildings surrounding it?

There is a small restaurant and bar already under construction and Beer City Music Hall (operated by the Tower Theatre guys) will still happen with time.

That just leaves a couple of small spaces.

I don't know if it will contribute to Fair-Weather Friend closing, but there are some court filings in the past month or so between the partnerships that make up Fair-Weather Friend and Reed and Adrienne (former owners) with allegations of fraud, in excess of $10,000, embezzlement, false accounting, and other activities.

    Oh my.

I had no idea the couple that ran the place (they were always there when I stopped in) had quit. I had interviewed them way back before they opened.

FWF is one of the few breweries that did a great job of connecting with people and building a steady clientele. I hope it can move forward regardless of what happens in the court proceedings.

Reading through some of those filings... wild stuff. I was there Memorial Day weekend after not having been for about 6 months and the beer and pizza is just phenomenal, and in such a great space. I had heard from a friend that John Elkins was going to be joining as head brewer, which now makes more sense. I enjoyed John's beer at Elk Valley, but I love the lager and hazy IPA heavy beer menu of FWF. Hopefully the investors are able to keep things together, but long term I fear that without the creative founders at the helm it may not be the same.

I was last there about a month ago right after they left and talked to one of the bartenders about it. Sounds like this came out of nowhere and they skipped town after stealing a bunch of stuff. From my understanding the owners didn't really have much involvement in the day to day so it was up to the staff to figure out what they needed to do to keep the doors open. The brewers didn't even have any existing recipes to go off of either so were just brewing off memory.

Not sure what would possess someone to do this stuff when you clearly won't get away with it. Hopefully they make it through it but I'm afraid their beers might never be the same again.

In reading the court documents, the managing couple claim that FWF never made a profit and therefore they couldn't continue working there. It sounds like they are filing personal bankruptcy.

They also dispute they took any money or property.

It sounds like a typical mess between investors and operators. Nobody wins when you start fighting things out with lawyers.

Oh, the lawyers win... and they win big!

The lawsuit is on-going but FWF is still open and operating.

I went by last week and finally tried one of their pizzas. Just as terrific as I had been told, they're doing happy hour specials and they now have weekend brunch menu.
