A little of both.
QuikTrip was definitely innovative and unique and when compared to the C-stores of the 80's and 90's. However, just about every national brand, and even a local brand like OnCue, saw what made QuikTrip successful and adjusted their model.
Look at how 7-11 adjusted and now builds much bigger stores in OKC, replacing the older ones that the Brown family built through the years, and offers more on-demand hot food. New Love's stores are similar with a much larger footprint and fresh food offerings.
OnCue has the advantage of having basically one large market to focus on (OKC) and their OKC stores are all less than a decade or so old and built on very large lots from the ground up. OnCue has some things that definitely set it apart from QT's current store design, like automatic entry or double doors for traffic flow, a completely large, natural light filled, doorless and touchless restroom, the covered canopy for shade in the heat of summer and rainy days, the drive through window.
QuikTrip is a much larger company, and like a large ship, it probably takes a lot of planning and effort to implement company wide changes to be consistent across all of their markets.
