Simply stunned that you don’t think any of them are “good”. lol

Yep, I'm a self-admitted food snob - life's too short to settle for average food, ate enough of that and below-average crap growing up. I don't eat donuts often, but when I do, I want them to actually be really good, not just a sugar-bomb with no yeast taste at all (or a cake blueberry donut that has no blueberry taste, or a chocolate frosted that has a scant 1/4 of the top dipped in chocolate that doesn't actually taste like chocolate or ....) and so far, not many places in OKC fit the bill.

It's almost as if people have different tastes and preferences. I love the light and airy donuts you'll find in the mom-pop stores in Oklahoma, which seem to all be descendants of the Daylight Donuts recipe. You can eat 2 or 3 of them and feel pretty satisfied. All the "specialty" places seem to stick to those thick, doughy rings which feel like an entire brick has been craned down into your abdomen. To me, those specialty shops are below-average crap.

I actually agree with you about the specialty places - too much stuff on top, too dense, not a good balance. A simple chocolate frosted yeast, choc-frosted yellow cake, plain glazed, blueberry cake will do, but just not the ones at the places that are all over that seem to get their dough all pumped through some massive network from one central reservoir.

Blueberries belong in pies, not donuts. My wife loves blueberries but she won't even eat a blueberry donut.

If she ever had a blueberry cake donut from Ingram's Busy Bee Bakery in Downer's Grove, IL, she'd be converted. That's the cake donut standard we compare everybody else to and pretty much nobody in OKC measures up so far.

But what in OKC actually does compare to any of your standards?

Haven't found a donut shop that I can repeatedly go back to and say "yes, they're good, I'll eat them again" yet. And I've tried at least 2 dozen, if not more...

None of the standard Daylight/Sunshine/Sunlight/AM/Best/whatever that are on every other corner, Polar, Shipley, Hurts, Holey Rollers (although we'll go there occasionally), can't think of any others off the top of my head... Mochinut is the only one we consistently go back to (and we've only been there 3 times), but those are different (haven't tried Momocha yet).

We tend to do pastry-type things now, like chocolate babka from Quincy, stuff like that. Tried a chocolate croissant from Harvey (because Summer Moon is selling their baked goods now) and it was good, so we'll have to brave the crowds at Harvey at some point.

I noticed you didn't mention Brown's.... Now I won't say Brown's is the best donut overall but their applesauce and blueberry cake donuts are what I compare all other cake donuts to.

I love the mochi donuts for their texture.

Y'know, for some reason, we never think of Brown's, haven't been there in years, need to go, thanks for the reminder. And yes, the mochi texture is great, sometimes the topping isn't that good, but the churros one at Mochinut is really good.

Have you tried Mochinut off Classen and 23rd? It is a different type of donut (In case you couldn't tell by the name, it uses mochi)

Yes, upthread I said "Mochinut is the only one we consistently go back to (and we've only been there 3 times), but those are different (haven't tried Momocha yet)." and also that we really like their churros one.

Never had Missy’s myself so I can’t compare. Need to try them if I’m ever up that way, as I keep on hearing about how good they are. Curious to who their distributor is. What makes their donuts so special?

Daylight doesn't distribute dough, just flour and mixes. The recipe is Daylight's, but the donuts are completely made in the stores.

I'm not sure what Dunkin' does, they taste like the cook the donuts in Boston and spend weeks getting them across the country to the stores.

Don't know about distributor, if you mean who supplies their dough or supplies, think it's all made in-house. Everything is in balance - the right amount of yeastiness (for raised donuts), right amount of frosting, frosting tastes like chocolate instead of some kind of pale imitation (similar to pancake syrup vs. dark color real maple syrup), the cake donuts are airy enough, not too dense, flavor is there in a good dose, their old-fashioned has the right amount of sourness to it, etc.

DD bakes them in a factory then freezes them before shipping them to the stores to be reheated to sell. They used to be made fresh in the stores and fried (like donuts should) not baked.

It's possible, but I doubt they make everything in-house. Especially if they're a high volume shop, which it sounds like they are. If you could tell me who supplies their donut base or mix, I could probably point to a shop to two in OKC that would offer similar quality. You most likely wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

FWIW - There are posts on reddit from people who claim to have worked for Dunkin' and they claim the donuts that come into the stores are not frozen. Apparently, the donuts are made locally and distributed to the stores and the stores will decorate themselves.

I have no firsthand knowledge, though. But it seems consistent with job postings you can find.

Dunkin’ is opening soon on the NW corner of 15th and Kelly in Edmond. This will be great since the 33rd and Broadway location closed recently. That intersection is also a busy one so this will help bring some life to it.

Not that I needed to be in closer proximity to the heavenly Boston crème donuts…

Ahh, good to know. I was wanting to pick some up on New Year's Eve for New Year's Day and the one at 33rd & Broadway did not show up in my GPS when trying to go there and I had to go to a drive through only location on N. May which I thought was weird. I want to SEE the donuts I want to put in my box. Happy to know there will be another location in Edmond and hope that it is a walk-in store.

I'm not 100% sure but I think I was told by another location, or I read somewhere, that Dunkin' has been shifting to the drive-thru only model. But I agree, when getting donuts there is a somewhat of a satisfaction of actually looking at the donuts.
