Anyone know how or why this street came by its name?

I grew up just off of Ann Arbor. There is Norman just west of MacArthur.

There are several place north/south streets in that immediate area named after places: Harvard, Vermont, Utah, Tulsa, College, State, Sapulpa.

Ann Arbor is a city in Michigan and home to the U of Michigan.

i dug up some old maps and the first instance of ann arbor that i could find was from 1947. assuming the map is accurate (this would have been on the city's outskirts at the time), ann arbor was a much shorter street that only existed around nw 16th to 19th. about a block west was another short street named austin. so... it seems to me that there was a city name theme.

Looks like the Rock Island industrial spur was built between the two maps, 1947-1953.

good to know! i do often use png and that must have been what bit me in the past. just out of luck, i happened to export these as jpg.

Thanks! I grew up in Ann Arbor from 1963 to 1979. I've long wondered if the name was simply plucked from the ethereum or was part of someone's personal story.

I did not know that spur was built that recent. When did it go out of service, was it when the Rock Island shut down?? I wish the old rr right of ways were kept for future use as walking/biking trails.

The Rock quit in 1980, don’t know when the last service on this line was. There were a number of industries served next to 39th, just east of Ann Arbor. If you look at Google maps, you can still follow the line as a green path down to the main line ( now the UP RR) around 4th, between Ann Arbor and Meridian.
