As someone who grew up in the far NW side of OKC and has lived on the north side my entire life: It is insane how much every other quadrant of the city is ignored by the rest of the city at large. I'm glad Wheeler District is in the south side and hopefully the lessons learned by OKC in the 2010s and 2020s allow Capitol Hill to become something Uptown, Western, and Plaza have failed to materialize into, because if those 2 areas don't bring momentum to the South, I'm not sure what will.
IMO, it basically comes down to the fact that there is an interstate highway running directly south of Downtown and a river directly to the south of that. Then another interstate highway running directly east of Downtown. Meanwhile to the north and west, there are no psychological barriers for roughly 3-4 miles in either direction.
I think people also downplay the amount of wealth in south OKC as well. There are some very well off people in very nice areas encompassing large swaths of the south part of the city. The south central area is a bit rough but that seems to be common for a lot of cities.
It might just be that it’s the area I’m most familiar with but I’ve always felt south side has quite a bit more personality than the rest of the city. It’s a shame that it has been relatively left to fend for itself by the city until fairly recently but it seems that has also forced it to create its own identity that’s been reliant on those in the community, thus making a fabric distinctly connected in a way just not typically found across the city.
