Thread: What happened to the Bricktown sign?

  1. Default What happened to the Bricktown sign?

What happened to the Bricktown entrance sign at Reno? I noticed the other day it appeared something tall had hit it and knocked down a good section of the entire wall. They were working on it this morning, so hopefully it will be fixed quickly.

Something taller than the height limit hit it. It has happened a few times and is always an unexpected expense! When we installed the sign, we had to build a false back made of sheet metal over the bridge to support it. That is what always gets dinged by big trucks.

Now you'd think truckers would be smart enough to notice that they are way too tall for that underpass.

Is it labeled with the height?

Well this appeared to have been done by something a good 3 feet too tall.

I would hope the city is billing the truck driver, truck owner and the insurance company for damages.

    The fonts are very similar:

I don't have one of the actual sign, but the font's pretty close here, too:

If you can dream it, you can do it!

Well if you know anything about graphic design, you know that those are not even remotely similar enough to warrant a lawsuit. I personally don't see much of a similarity. I work with fonts every day.

If no one sees who did it, we have to pay for the repairs.

Maybe we should add "The Happiest Place on Earth" to our sign too, I like that!

I think that "Leave your pants at the door" would get us more press.

Or even better add a Lower Bricktown sign "the stucco crappiest place on earth" thanks to Randy Hogan.

That's a bit of an exaggeration.

    You're awesome.

I was kidding about the lawsuit. I work with fonts too and there are similarities. I only mentioned it because I have heard a lot of people call it the Disneyland sign and some out of town guests, mainly those from Orange County, have commented on it as being similar. Obviously when you put them right next to each other and analysis the specific nuances of the serifs and the weight attributes, they're different and no law suit is or ever will be pending, but the similarities are there, enough that when people see it out of context, some say "Haven't I have seen this somewhere before..."

It was a joke and had I realized how sensitive some were about fonts (actually I am aware that some are insane about fonts), I would have never made it. Sorry.

I realized you were joking and, you are right, it doesn't take working with fonts everyday to see that they are similar. The things that can rile people up sometimes blows me away.

All I can say is I never noticed it nor did anyone else point it out to me until this thread. I don't think we should be so self-conscious to worry about what people might think of the font used on the Bricktown sign, and that seemed to be your tone.

Sorry. I must have a different idea of what the emoticon means. I thought it meant I was kidding.

I didn't design the sign and am not self conscious about it. If anything, I'm more self conscious or concerned with whether or not what's beyond the sign actually lives up to the sign itself.

I work with fonts every day, too. Mostly helvetica.
