There is news and there is discussion.

I 100% stand by everything we have ever reported as news.


Nobody is claiming social media is a good substitute for traditional journalism. But there is plenty of hard news from OKCTalk, FreePressOKC, Oklahoma Watch, The Frontier and NonDoc. And should the Oklahoman go away, even more of this type of true local journalism will flourish. There is very little about the Oklahoman that is local at all.

And you're kidding yourself if you don't think through bias and agenda-pushing the Oklahoman hasn't engaged in more slanted and harmful reporting than all the other media sites in this state combined. A huge amount of the deep issues in Oklahoma can be directly tied to their agendas (underfunded education, etc.).

To this very day, they continue to print tons of 'news' that is not backed with any sort of objective fact-checking.

I was just going to say the first sentence pete, OKC Talk has a news function AND a discussion function. The news function is subject to the same if not better/higher journalism standards as the traditional media, most if not all of the time OKC is unbiased with the possible exception of being pro-OKC which we'd expect. The discussion forum, however, can be biased or bs (as you called it) because it takes feedback from the general public in a discussion forum. This was the original OKC Talk yet it has evolved thanks to Pete and team into a true journalism source. The Oklahoman used to have a discussion forum too (I was one of the original members back in the 1990s) yet they got rid of it and OKC Talk was born.

I believe they are owned by same company which is why we get the "bonus edition" with our subscription. However, about 50% or more is the same articles as in the Oklahoman

I agree that OKCTalk has done a great job, and I deeply respect your work. I should have put more emphasis on the "like" in my original sentence. While this site does a great job, I think we all know what I'm really getting at. Social media news is a cesspit, and oftentimes when a major event is happening social media runs wild with rumors and false info. Not everyone differentiates between news and discussion so well.

Point is, newspapers LIKE the Oklahoman had a place, but they've all been run into the ground by people who can't figure out what customers want from media these days. The Oklahoman was never good, but they at least had an once of credibility in reporting events with basic journalistic sense. Not like some guy on Twitter injecting his take into everything.

Frontier and a couple others do tremendous work, but they struggle to extend their reach because they aren't very flashy despite tremendous reporting on major issues.

It’d be cool to see OKCTalk open a physical location maybe with a cafe and the some offices where FP and OKCSpan could connect and work together. I thought Pete was working with the Gazette not sure what happened.

IMO OKC is very blessed to have OKCTalk and someone like Pete who keeps this place going.

Kept seeing the links to USA Today; really didn't know what to think.

I know there has been a lot of buzz about the Oklahoman, somewhere the quality of this once wealthy organization has deflated.

Wow, it's just insane how small of a footprint the paper needs now. From the sprawling campus of old to now this. I'm not sure if its sad or not. I mean now, most of the people can work from home in this job as well, but dang. It feels like if you're doing reporting, that being in a room with your colleagues would be important for the natural flow of conversation in the way a Teams call can't do. Guess I'm old school that way.

The Oklahoman only has about 100 local employees now, so their much smaller space isn't a function of remote working.

Yes, I believe that is the correct way to describe the transaction. After 25+ years I can't swear to all of the finer details, but that is essentially how it happened.

Was there some kind of ordinance or agreement put in place that prevented the screen from being on after a certain time because of the Colcord? Will they be able to leave the screen on longer since it won't be facing the hotel now?

I do remember how bright it was the first few days they turned it on when I worked at the Colcord. That being said, each room has thick drapes that basically block any light from coming in. I don't remember anyone making a comment about it, but I wasn't there much longer.

no, not on the top of FNC or anything (although City Place once had a video ad on top), I'm talking like on the 2nd-ish floor of FNC facing the south/SW. would complement the ticker tracker at Corporate Tower? and the News 9, with perhaps a few more would make a Times-ish Square vibe.
