Amazon Sortation #2

Amazon has filed plans for another sortation facility at 8832 SW 15th, near County Line Road.

I believe this is to supplement the very first facility they opened here, the sortation facility at SW 15th & Council.

This will be 535,790 square feet (vs. 300,000 at the older facility) and likely employ hundreds. The site plan shows almost 500 employee parking spaces.

The Chamber will never list them as one of the top employers in Central Oklahoma (they don't list Walmart either) but I would bet they now employ more than Hobby Lobby and might be the largest private employer in OKC. My estimates show this would bring them up to over 4,000 local employees.

It is not bad at all for OKC to have Amazon investing this much! They pay well, and have good benefits, and increase property tax revenues and income tax revenues. Might seem like blue-collar jobs, but these are good jobs, and a positive sign for OKC.

They are also near opening a 'last mile" mail sortation facility for large/bulky items at 3401 S. Council.

If you count the 4-star retail store going into Classen Curve, that will be 8 Amazon facilities in OKC.

The 3401 S. Council warehouse started construction as something else then changed over when Amazon signed a lease. Should be very close to opening and is 122,000 SF.

I have to say as someone that lives in this area that they have essentially built all these giant Amazon facilities, that it really has decreased the quality of life. Any direction I go I'm impacted by this massive amounts of increased traffic due to Amazon. Ironically we order less now from Amazon than we did before they opened the first facility. We've noticed none of these facilities have brought any new restaurants or retail that weren't already close by. Oh well, seems to be the way it goes.

Maybe it's time to move to a quieter neighborhood now that the market's hot? I don't see blaming Amazon since they are building in an area that has long been a warehouse district.

I may be wrong but I thought the original plan was that this area was going to be retail and restaurants....not warehouses. This was empty airport land and was never a warehouse district.

Some areas are designated retail and restaurants, while others are designated for commercial and industrial use.

If you're talking about the sorting facility #2, it's long been industrial/warehouses. If you're talking about the airport facilities, it's been retail or industrial type uses since before MAPS 1 when OKC was trying to land aircraft maintenance facilities.

That still may be on the books for other land. There's a lot of vacant space still.

I live West of the airport so between these amazon facilities and the one up council, my paths into the city are now severely impacted by all the traffic generated by these facilities. It easily adds 10 minutes to my commute. Going back the other direction is the city of Mustang, and it's been congested for awhile. The river is to the south so can't go that way. I can't go any direction from my house anymore that there isn't massive amounts of traffic, and a couple of years ago, there was next to none going these directions. I mean I get there was always going to be progress, but there was clearly little thought put into this area, and it's caused massive traffic headaches that quite honestly have pushed us to move.

We've been looking for about a year and a half had zero luck finding anything close to what we want. My daughter starts school next year so we were hoping to be moved before then so we don't have to change schools mid year. It's not looking real promising.

Conversations about a new river bridge or two need to begin. I know it isn't cheap but they need to at least start some sort of planning.

I’ll be honest when I saw this news a few weeks ago made me think I needed to move even more. I’m not looking to live next to a highway. Going south doesn’t net me anything anyways. I’m not planning on driving to Newcastle to go shopping.

Well the uses for a new bridge would probably be used by residents south of the river to get into the cities north of it.
