Thread: Wheeler District

  1. Default Re: Wheeler District

I think it would be very cool if Wheeler added a model airplane "Airport" area complete with a runway and taxiways for enthusiasts to come use. It could be a throwback to the former use of the lands while also adding yet another amenity for the city.

Any way we could propose to the developers/city?

Through the few years I have been reading these OKC talk forum, it is the dorkiest proposition I have ever seen !

I cant imagine resident excited at the idea of hearing the sounds of these models and agree to see their expensive houses damaged by one mishap.

Probably why we have RC airfield in remote area by Drapper and Hefner lakes.

to each his own. Doesn't seem to be an issue with folks having drones in typical neighborhoods.

Ill return the favor and troll your posts too.

7 time Formula 1 World Champion, Sir Lewis Hamilton started by racing RC cars when he was 5 years old. What future astronaut or test pilot may find their passion and direction flying RC planes?

"Dorks" rule the world and I don't think it's very kind to poo-poo on peoples hobbies.

You can see in the third photo that construction is well underway on the condo building directly west of the barrel-shaped structure.

The house under construction in the lower left, seemingly off by itself, is a custom all-brick build by Building Culture. It’s going to be something completely different in the neighborhood.

I currently live in Tulsa... love following along with this project. Jealous, there's nothing really like it built up here.

Curious about the work/live locations... can anyone give some insight on what business (if any) are open in these? The houses are very nice, but the shops are the coolest thing IMO by far. Reminds me of Bob's Burgers

There's currently only one retail shop in the work-live spaces, and that’s Thrown Design and Wine. There is also a a legal office, a realtor office, a chiropractor, a bookkeeping business, a counselor, and Wheeler’s real estate office and their construction office.

I had hoped there would be more retail/coffee/eateries in the spaces, something to bring people in and liven it up, but it turns out that’s quite difficult for a number of reasons, including that the spaces aren’t really conducive for it, given how narrow they are. I’m hoping they build more of these, but apply some new techniques/strategies that can attract retail, though we all know how difficult retail is even with great spaces.

    same

my understanding is that no one is living and working. All the owners either bought to work and lease out the live or bought to live and lease out to work. correct me if wrong tho.

I thought a developer in Tulsa was planning something like this north of downtown?

Yeah, and anyone who has been to Wheeler knows there is plenty of room to park. The neighborhood has hosted events that draw hundreds of people and there’s never an issue with parking. Those people complaining are probably the type of people least likely to ever visit a neighborhood like Wheeler, regardless of the parking situation.

You may be thinking of the vacant TDA/UCAT land north of downtown. They are currently developing a master plan for that area that will include mixed-use development that will be similar to the Wheeler District. It would be great to see Grant Humphreys develop his first Tulsa project here.

There is also a similar development planned for NW Tulsa about 2 miles from downtown. It has run into some issues with getting the charter school off the ground and extending city sewer lines. I think it’s still a couple years out from breaking ground but will be very cool if built as planned.

That’s a good deal. Hopefully with the new infrastructure package they can tunnel I-244 and make that development even more attractive. It would indeed be a good spot for Humphrey to pull off the development. Tunneling I-244 would be a good project for Kaiser to help become a reality. All of the ingredients are there just need the will.

Cafe Disco is doing pretty well, I believe, and they've got a super-narrow/small space in an off-the-beaten-path location (although the area is picking up now).

Work on the community pool has started! The pool and park is located on the west side of the property so it cannot be seen in this picture.

The sign on the door says that Taco Nation will open on March 1st. There was a big party in there on Saturday night so I imagine they are doing a minimal remodel.

Any idea what's going to be done with the old hangar right along western? Part of me would like to see it refurbished and repurposed, but another part of me would like to see it knocked over.

My understanding is it's presently just being used for storage.

All their plans show that hanger being repurposed down the line.

It could be something really cool.
