Seems like a nice haven’t been there. New master plan in the works to improve trails and facilities here:

“ The first phase of improvements recommended in a Turkey Mountain master plan are getting underway.

River Parks Authority hosted a groundbreaking Friday afternoon with 12 miles of trail building slated to begin Nov. 15. Crews have already started flagging trails in the urban wilderness area.

Progressive Trail Design, which has contributed to the extensive trail network in northwest Arkansas, is leading the project. Director of Business Development Jason Stouder said their focus is on sustainable trails, meaning rock armoring and less steep grades.”

Turkey mountain is one thing I can look at about Tulsa and say, that's an amazing place that we can't replicate in OKC. Not that there aren't others. But TM for sure.

So turkey mountain is a park akin to Griffith park in LA?

Oh I presumed you had been. Yes, but it's a mountain... or at least a large hill. So some of the trails go up into the mountain and some are on the grounds around it. There are great cliffs where you can sit and look out at the Arkansas River. To get that here you have to drive down to the Wichitas pretty much. Or just drive up to Turkey Mountain from here for that matter.

It's a huge forested hilly area with miles of hiking and mtn biking trails. The improvements are needed as it has become a popular place and many of the trails are eroded. They have plans to expand the wilderness area to the southwest and close Elwood (the steep road below) and part of 61st St to create more trails in future phases.

Not really, mostly people accessing Turkey Mtn. No way would they tunnel it when they aren’t even tunneling Yale between 81st and 91st.

For those of you not familiar...this plan wouldn't be so grand if it weren't fort the Kaiser Foundation. The developers of an outlet mall wanted to build right next to turkey mountain, on a lot that has quite a few trails running through it. People got upset, and GKFF bought the lot. The developers decided to build next the river down in jenks. Then Covid hit. So now it is just a lot of rusted walls and foundation!

Another interesting thing of note. Turkey mountain is not managed by the city of Tulsa Parks Department or Tulsa County, but by a 3rd entity "River Parks". Not really sure how they were created, but they are neat entity that manages park space as good as anyone can - definitely the best in the city.

Riverparks Authority is a joint city/county parks system for the park along the river including The Gathering Place.
