At least until they die in enough numbers to get us to the herd immunity percentage...

I prefer to be optimistic and hope that we can convince enough people to get vaccinated instead...

But yes, until the R0 is <1 through lack of viable hosts, this will continue to be a problem.

I've been optimistic too. But I've actually heard at least a dozen conversations in the last couple of weeks with one side saying "I haven't heard anything about a Delta variant and didn't know cases were going back up". Ignorance is bliss for the ignorant but scary for everyone else.

On the "plus" side, this Delta wave is likely to give antibodies to a large number of the population (either through vaccines or natural infection) and hopefully is the last big wave before this thing turns endemic and just burns in the background like the flu or colds or other viruses. Also, Delta burns quickly (just check out the stats in the Netherlands or UK or Russia or Indonesia) so we should be done with this masking business by Halloween at the latest.

On FB the City Of OKC basically pleads for people to get vaccinated. Read the comments and you'll get a handle on the vaccination problem.

Ya looks like other countries hit with this burned through it real fast.

The risk of a COVID case for an unvaccinated person with the dominant Delta variant is now more harmful for hospitalizations, death, and spread than it ever has been in the pandemic.
Don't shoot the messenger, but I just read that vaccinated people who develop Covid are still capable of transmitting a full viral load, hence the CDC decision to recommend indoor masking again, especially in areas with a lot of unvaccinated freaking idiots, like Oklahoma.

Most of Oklahoma should start wearing masks again with high transmission rates per the CDC

Congratulations to the anti-vaxxers and the vaccine "hesitant." You did it!

There was a comment above that Delta is going to "burn" quickly based on stats from the UK and that we'll be through this wave by October (with thousands more Americans unnecessarily dead and thousands of children left without a parent). That might be true insofar as Delta is concerned, but we would do well to remember new variants are coming. Viruses want to survive, and those who refuse to get vaccinated are providing the virus a wonderful environment to achieve that aim--and endangering the rest of us in the process.

I’m not necessarily saying I support mandatory vaccines at this time but I do wonder how many times people will put up with this until a serious discussion about mandatory vaccines is had. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, I think this pandemic might change the world more than most people think. Personally I think we should have that discussion sooner rather than later but if you are correct and more variants sprout and thrive, what other options are there?

Ridiculous that we have the solution to this and refuse to use it. Well half the country refused to use it, but their refusal impacts everyone.

I know this thread isn't in the politics forum, but there is a clear incentive to ALL political leaders to get their base vaccinated. Do they want their votes to literally die???

That’s why we need to decide what the next steps are. Clearly the government in Oklahoma thinks there is no issue therefore no conversation to be had. This is absurd and it’s scary to think we are moving towards a future like idiocracy. You want to think this is probably the dumbest era in American history and it won’t get worse.

PS, consider this when going to Coffee Slingers:

Thanks for the heads-up, f*** Coffee Slingers. If anybody wants coffee from a local place that actually follows science, go to Classen Coffee, they've been good about it since it all started.

    1,474 new cases today. Last several Wednesdays: 1,203; 1,082, 151, 276.

    7-day rolling average now 1,236

    Hospitalizations are 639 (+62).

    ICU is 203 (+16).

Those hospital numbers are very troubling.

That number was down to 106 just 6 weeks ago, and has increased 6-fold to 639.

ICU is just as bad; had been down to 30 and has increased over 6-fold to 203.

I was going back to look at numbers from last year to compare and saw this comment from December of 2020. lol all because some people don’t want to get a shot.

I'll be first in line for a booster as well.

It's unbelievable we have a free, easy solution and people just won't bother. Then, want to bitch nonstop about 'freedoms' and mask mandates.

Freedom has a price, and in this case it amounts to about the smallest effort imaginable.

Heard a bit of story the other day how there are multitudes of Chinese students coming over to the US to study, being exposed to the circus of our political theater (both pre but especially post pandemic) and returning home after graduation with the notion that democracy and capitalism just are not worth it and that the trade off with what they have to deal with in China is better.

Pretty crazy that the "greatest country in the world" is operating in such a way that the rest of the world is like "DO NOT WANT".

That is a major reason why people refuse to get the vaccine. They fear it will cause them to die in a matter of days to by the next year to two. They're stuck between a rock and a hard place from not knowing what will happen to them from getting vaccinated and not knowing what will happen to them from getting sick with COVID-19.

The anti-vaxxers are mighty active in putting out their crazy crap, but I don't see much debunking it.

More like they're stuck between cable news and social media.

I can't say how widespread this group is but I've overheard or been in at least a dozen discussions the last couple of weeks with people that simply hadn't heard of Delta or that numbers were going back up. No fear or misinformation keeping them from getting vaccinated. Just no information at all. And all of these oblivious people were in their 20s.

It's because the people in their social media bubble aren't talking about it, and they mostly are no longer exposed in any way to traditional news. 10 or so years ago when I started hearing and reading people openly bragging about getting their news exclusively via social media I knew that as a society we were in for a world of hurt; I just didn't know exactly what it would look like. THIS is what it looks like.

I get that some people don't follow the news religiously which is fine, but I have a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that people are that oblivious.
