The numbers coming out this week are pretty mind-numbing. By itself, it seems like we can attack this thing and win, but the response from the general public in Oklahoma and other southern states almost makes this entire thing feel so hopeless. I just don’t understand the “don’t tread on me crowd.”
I really hope the active case numbers don’t translate into deaths. I really hope that we have better treatments that will prevent a large number of deaths, but we will just have to see.
At this point, we really need a vaccine...
I can at least wrap my head around this thinking, although it's selfish and shortsighted. But watching the Edmond City Council I saw a lot of the organic food/vegan/conspiracy nut folks who were so misinformed about so many things and who had some pretty crazy science ideas. The lady crying about how we're poisoning kids making them breath their own CO2 and how keeping us from hugging is just one step in getting us to concentration camps and something involving Nazis (I couldn't follow the logic). It's this level of crazy being given a voice at these meetings that I can't wrap my head around in the least. I can't even blame politics for a lot of these folks because some of them fall much more on the far left side of the spectrum but then again that's the whole horseshoe theory for you.
I completely understand the issues Pete raised. The reason it will be dumb is because it won’t be safe. I agree in fantasy land there might be a silver bullet making this something less than a public health debacle. I am all in favor of people smarter than me examining all of the scenarios to find a solution, but I don’t see much evidence of that happening.
Teachers should not have to be exposed to a deadly virus, and their families by extension, unless it is safe to do so. Also, kids will get it and bring it home with them, causing more community spread.
This country completely screwed the pooch in dealing with the virus, leaving us with few options to resume seeing much of what we resemble as normal life.
Not really. This thing is mutating slowly and what mutations it has had aren't changing the fundamentals of what vaccines are targeting:

Everything is fine No need to worry just wear a mask. That is what will be said by our leaders. What they should be saying is we are rolling back to phase 1 but we all know that will never happen.
Is the reason people are not taking it seriously is cause they don't see it for themselves? Even I have to ask where are all these sick people. I turn on the local news I see they same people. I go to my local food place I see the same people. Meaning no one has gotten sick at these places so surly I can't get sick either right?
Select specialty Hospital is a joke of a place. Personal experience. Wouldn't want to be in ICU there.
Everything in your response shows scientific misunderstandings and contradicts experts. I don't think you understand what "mutation" means or how it applies to COVID-19 so you might start there. PoliSciGuy provided links if you'd like to learn more. I am not going to try to write an essay on these topics as there is plenty of available info from credible sources online, but I know enough to identify misinformation and logical fallacies when I see them.
So this seems like what should've been/should be done. Not mine, copied from the net.
A national program of free, regular COVID-19 testing for everyone, managed by a Pandemic Testing Board that would coordinate the data and provide consistent access. This includes expanding drive through test sites and test availability until no one has to wait, or to expose themselves to potential risk, to be tested for COVID-19.
A national program of contact tracing that starts with at least 100,000 new hires and is dedicated to doing nothing but tracking COVID-19 cases, their contacts, and their progress through the healthcare system or in self-isolation. This would work in conjunction with states that are currently throwing up their hands at the impossibility of working through contacts with the available resources.
A consistently managed, sustainable supply chain for PPE, test kits, and safety gear for healthcare workers. Four months into the pandemic, states are again complaining that masks, gowns, gloves, and face shields are all in short supply, just as cases are surging.
A team dedicated to looking ahead to needs that may crop up in the future, rather than just addressing the requests of states at the moment.
A national promise to provide healthcare workers with:
- priority access to supplies of PPE.
- additional pay for placing themselves at risk.
- free housing to workers coming into crisis points.
- information hotlines and trustworthy on-line consultation.
- emotional-health support and psychological first aid with a promise that seeking help will not impact future employment.
- emergency leave for workers who get sick, or need to care for a sick family member.
A coordinated global effort to develop treatments and vaccines
A guarantee that therapies and vaccines for COVID-19 will be made available to everyone, without allowing price gouging that limits benefits to the wealthy.
Consistent national guidelines for reopening businesses and schools that include protections for worker safety, guaranteed sick leave, and guaranteed leave for those caring for a family member. Also, provide systems by which consumers could know that stores were following safety guidelines and were “Safer for Shoppers” while providing small businesses with a “restart package” that would help them retain existing workers and hire new workers while dealing with necessary changes to their business.
Additional funding and testing to the elderly so that they can safely obtain the things they need and get care without facing increased risk.
Was browsing the OKC Masked and Unmasked group and saw a bunch of posts about various restaurants' workers in OKC city limits not wearing masks and the commenters were asking what to do. Holt said to call 911 in his declaration, and other commenters said that too, but *tons* of them said "Well, I don't want to be a Karen and report that" or "The police have enough to do", or "some other BS". Why *wouldn't* you call 911 - it's literally a public health emergency right now...
