I worked at UPS as well in the summer of 1985 while going to school. It was a night shift job and while it paid well in comparison to many other jobs, there was a reason for the pay. When I worked there it was a 20 hour a week job. So while the pay per hour rate was good, the amount of hours sucked. In addition in those days it was a closed shop. Full time dues but part time work. Add in the commute from Norman to OKC and the disruption of the natural sleep cycle of humans to sleep at night, it was a job I left within a month. As noted earlier, it took an act of congress to get a bathroom break.

I'm also not excited about the location and what it does to this area. I live West of here and this area is already extremely gummed up by poor traffic planning and terrible light placement. Not to mention 104th street is in disrepair throughout the intersection here. Just getting to the Walmart on the other side is a headache. At first glance I would think this would help push development across the street, but given these jobs aren't high paying, I doubt it brings anything more than fast food, which will be a disappointment.

Sorry for negative post, I knew the fulfillment center was coming, but I had really hoped it would be up on Council in the existing warehouse district near their other facility. I get why they want to be where this where they are putting it but IMO this is a negative for the area.
I agree with Zup as far as it being a negative here. Even between 74 and 89 would be better. This intersection is already poorly designed. The I44 SW 119 exit is even worse with all the new homes down at SW119/Meridian. As a result, many people get off at SW 104th and then go west to Meridian and then turn south to avoid all the backlog at 119th. Keep in mind that SW 104th is a 2 lane road that is the main ingress/egress from the south for the FAA. From the intersection of 104/Portland to the light at 104th/I44 is less than a football field so you will have traffic attempting to turn left east bound from Portland (It is 2 lane here thankfully) as well as the traffic leaving FAA. Hopefully they design it so most of the traffic is diverted to 89th street as far as ingress/egress.

Aren’t we still dealing with Amazon to finalize this thing?

Aren’t we able to ask companies to pay for road/intersection improvements in exchange for incentives and permits?

Wow - The Oklahoman runs a story http://newsok.com/okc-in-talks-with-...rticle/5591394 and gives no credit to OKCTalk. That’s petty, arrogant journalism.

Am I misremembering or wasn't there supposed to be a aviation themed bar somewhere near that, with a view out towards the runway?

    That would be really cool.

I swear I read about it here? But when I look at the overhead view, it would need to be on the 2nd story of a building in order to get a decent look at the runway..

Yeah for some reason that does strike a bell with me too.

My wife and I’ve noticed down on 119th that they are monitoring road traffic with counters. Guessing they are going to be getting lights. It’s becoming time consuming for those of us that live West of I44 to get to Southwest OKC.

Be thankful. OKC could have got a big ole nothing like many other cities.

Now, in the United States alone Amazon operates over 320 facilities as part of their fulfillment network which amounts to over 120 million square feet. Globally, the company is approaching 200 million square feet.

29 states have currently operating Amazon fulfillment centers.
Many, many other cities already have these. It's in Amazon's business model to open one or more of them in any metro area with enough of an Amazon using population to justify it.

One silver lining to the location is that it will be very visible from airplanes landing and taking off on the east runway. Some good advertising for OKC by having such a large facility by such a large company in direct eyesight of business travelers and first time visitors.

I know this mentions shortened delivery times for the popular products, but does this bring the prospect of same day delivery?

That will probably only happen through drones, and Amazon is getting very close to making that happen.

Ironically, that would likely be an issue with this location being so close to the airport.

I know they do same day delivery in some areas using traditional delivery methods, so didn't know if that would be in play. I already get one day delivery on lots of items through Prime, but especially in the IT world, getting parts same day would be amazing.

I bet they will offer it on some items.

Same day is through their Prime Now facilities which are completely separate and different from what OKC will be getting.

As I understand it Prime Now is for household stuff and two hour delivery but there are cities without Prime Now that have some items on same day delivery for 8.99

People couldn’t just take breaks at odd times because they were part of a whole system of sorters, belts, loaders and trucks. That was the work and why it paid better. Some couldn’t handle it and some could. In ‘72 when I started they paid about double or more than other part time jobs. I was young, in good shape physically and mentally, and was appreciative of the job. Yes, my 7:30 Logic class was hard to stay awake in, but i couldn’t afford to quit and therefore not pay my way. I was blessed to have a job I could do and make the money I needed. Lots of people will be grateful for these jobs. Not everybody is in the situation to be choosy.

One day delivery for a lot of things is still pretty awesome.

Regarding pay for most of the jobs at this facility. Were getting to the point where robots may actually be cheaper and more efficient for this type of work. You can find videos from China with heavily automated warehouse facilities.
So there is almost so much pay to expect from this type of job.

I wish Amazon would stop using USPS. I use Amazon several times a month, and just always have issues with the PO. The one that delivers my mail is the Penn 89th one and it's atrocious. I'm up to 6 packages in the past 6 months where they didn't deliver and held it at the PO, for reasons unknown. I've tried calling them but their location phone rings and rings. I've finally got Amazon on my side cause apparently this is a known issue and we have complaints in that have now reached their 3rd level, whatever the heck that means. I've come to the conclusion that what it is is the lady carrier doesn't want to get out of the truck. If she can cram it in my mailbox, she will, but if she has to drop it at the door, she won't. I got her on camera not even attempting, just driving on with tracking that claims couldn't deliver. The one thing I can hope for with the fulfillment is they do tend to do the next day delivery, and Amazon will contract to local delivery services.

huh... i'm pretty sure that i'm served by that same station. my usps amazon packages get delivered ok apart from a couple being slighlty crammed into the mailbox... but for me, it's a pretty regular occurrence to get a whole stack of my neighbors' mail. i've wondered if it was just my carrier but it sounds like the whole station has problems.

They will never do that. USPS is significantly cheaper than Fed EX or UPS. The USPS has to go to every mailbox six days a week and they already have that infrasture built up to do that.
