MAPS lake to be drained for construction of boat ramp
The lake formed by the Eastern Avenue MAPS dam will be drained on or around Oct. 11 for construction of a public boat ramp.
The ramp will be on the north side of the lake just east of Byers Avenue.
The lake will be empty until about Dec.11.
The dams and lakes are one of the nine MAPS projects funded by a temporary dedicated one-cent sales tax approved by voters Dec. 14, 1993.
Three dams at Eastern, Western and May avenues created a seven-mile series of river lakes, which will be bordered by landscaping, trails and recreational facilities. Locks at the Western and May Avenue Dams will allow boats to navigate the project’s entire length.
The American Public Works Association named the MAPS River Redevelopment its 2004 ‘Environment Project of the Year’ in the above $10 million category.
