New Commercial Zone - Highway 9, east of 36th SE

City council on Tuesday approved a measure to rezone from residential to commercial a plot of land south of Highway 9 and east of 36th SE. Council members that voted against it include Lynne Miller (Ward 5 councilwoman and representative of this area), Greg Jungman, Tom Kovach, and Mayor Rosenthal. Main objections include sprawl (since this is mostly rural land now) and environmental impacts. They also raised concerns that the 2025 Plan continues to have very frequent revisions.

No indication on what is going in there. Seems to be pretty unreasonable considering the vast amount of land still available for commercial development along Technology Place and also west of 24th SE by the old Perfect Swing.

I don't know. It would sure be nice to have some sort of a grocery store in South Norman. I spend all my time on south campus and live in south Norman and there isn't a whole lot of commercial stuff down here.

I know getting a grocery store in Southeast Norman is a pretty high priority right now, but so far no news. A lot of rumors on what will happen with the Perfect Swing property, so hopefully we see something in there someday. Would love to knock it out and get Trader Joe's or Kroger as a new entrant to the market, but we'll have to wait and see.

As a new resident of southeast Norman, I agree! I'm still not sure we should just keep spreading further and further out to 36th though, creating more rural-ish/suburban-ish sprawl. One of my favorite things about Norman and Oklahoma in general is how quickly I can go from a town to rural. I'd prefer not to have more and more half-developed land everywhere. Make the already-developed parts of Norman denser and keep the outskirts nice and open.

Bingo. When I'm driving out to the lake I want to feel like I'm going out to a rural/park area...not something like Hefner. Need to do everything we can to get the development west of 36th to help fill in those areas that need it.

Mmhmm. Make no sense why they needed to redo the zoning even further out for commercial development.
