Thread: CFB Top 25 Rankings - Week 5

  1. Default CFB Top 25 Rankings - Week 5

Another ho-hum performance (at least for the first quarter and a half) for OU and down they go again. The good news, 6 Big 12 teams are now in the AP Top 25...but Baylor found itself very close to falling out. Texas Tech would be #29 as they continue to hold it together. Possible A&M replacement Houston is #27.

I think Wisconsin deserves the #5 ranking. And I can't remember the last time I seen Clemson ranked in the top 10. I think Georgia Tech should be ranked higher than #13 though.

AP...the poll that is no longer relevant.

Coaches is the only one I personally pay attention to until the BCS polls start coming out.

Until it comes down to the end of the year and we have split national titles. I tend to think the AP is a bit more accurate since, let's be honest, the coaches don't have the time to evaluate all the teams out there. Looking at how OU has performed the last two weeks, I would be struggling to make them a Top 10 team.

Now for some positive news...Blake Bell. He is going to be fun as hell to watch. A running QB at OU. It has been ages.

The AP title is now a hollow accomplishment and universally ignored, there really is no such thing as a "split title" anymore, no one but USC ever claims an AP title since the advent of the BCS system. It has been made even more irrelevant by the BCS after they chose to be excluded from the BCS calculation. It's not like writers have a whole lot of time to watch games either since most are covering a live game and not sitting at home watching multiple games on multiple televisions like some of us. I probably watch more football on one Saturday than most writers do in a month. Coaches aren't filling out ballots either, someone in the athletic department is and whoever that is may be watching more games than writers do as well.

Yeah...I don't disagree with most of your points. All in all, this shows by the BCS doesn't start until halfway through the season since Pre-Season and early season rankings are worthless. OU should never have been #1 and it shows. Now, can they improve to be #1? Definitely...just haven't seen it yet.

What happens when an undefeated #2 team beats an undefeated #1 team or vice versa. Does it significantly hurt them in the rankings or do they just switch places?

Typically they'll drop to around #4 or #5 based on the times I've seen #1 and #2 play which isn't as good as #1 or #2 obviously but to answer your question, no it doesn't hurt them significantly.

The AP poll is all about what have you done and who have you played lately. Alabama trailed Florida 7 - 0 early. Does that mean they played poorly to start the game so they should be downgraded? Notice that OSU dropped without playing so the drop had nothing do with a poor showing. OU could have played a perfect game against Ball State and beat them 90 - 0 and it wouldn't have mattered in the rankings. An impressive performance against Texas may not put them back at number 1 in the AP poll but it will certainly improve their point total substantially.

Don't be stupid. :-P I'm just being realistic. OU is a really good team, but they lack what it needs to be a championship caliber team. Unless you tuned out the first quarter of the Ball State game or the screw ups against Missouri. They did really well against Florida State and then went flat. They aren't wanting to put in 100% every week and it is going to bite them in the ass sooner or later. If we just go back the Coaches poll for this week, we still have #7, #10, #21, and #25 to get through. Kansas should be okay. Tech is always a tricky one. Baylor is obviously going to be harder than normal. Iowa State should be another safe one. Either way, we've faced the strongest defense statistically for the year in Florida State...but we have a lot stronger offenses on the road ahead.

Yeah, OSU fell victim to 1) not player and 2) Wisconsin smothering Nebraska. As far as Bama/Florida. Yeah they were down early, but Florida isn't Ball State. OU was just completely flat for the first quarter plus some of the 2nd. If we were playing Florida, we would have been down a couple touchdowns playing like that. The majority of the teams remaining on the schedule aren't going to give us a ramp up time during the game. If they want the Big 12 title again and attempt to compete for the BCS title, they need to be willing to play all 4 quarters. I'm just glad they didn't do the typical prevent defense and give Ball State a couple easy touchdowns late.

You'll notice that we never trailed a Florida State team on the road which I believe may be much better than Florida. Has OU played completely focused and up to their ability in every game? NO. Has any other team? NO. There is a long way to go this season and it will all even out according to ability and effort. If you'll remember, the last time we won a national championship we beat a 3-8 OSU team 12-7. It doesn't require being pefect in every game. It just needs being good when it counts.

Jerry Palm put out his Top 120 for CBS today. He is one of the BCS experts out there that operates CollegeBCS.com that I've really enjoyed in the past. The rankings he has are definitely different than the AP and Coaches, but I think he also is putting SOS and other factors into play as well.

That's different. Seeing OSU in the top 5 and not OU. But Notre Dame #18? Not that I'm taking this man seriously but dude must really like Notre Dame to still have them in the top 25.

OU is still #1 in the only poll that matters or factors into the bcs!

Here is the current BCS standings. Harris and 2 computer polls are not active yet, so they put in the AP for Harris.

Side note to the BCS. This site has the breakdown from last week (not updated with the previous week's games yet):

    http://www.bcsguru.com/bcs_standings.htm

OU is getting pulled down by computer rankings right now. Colley has us 10th, Sagarin has us 6th, Massey is 13th, and Billingsley has us 2nd. Getting a Texas win will help a ton with them being a ranked team. The computers are loving OSU right now in the top 3 in all of them.

  21. Default Re: CFB Top 25 Rankings - Week 5

Week 5 BCS figures updated finally. So the poll changes are...

Colley went from 10th to 7th
    Sagarin - 6th to 7th
    Massey - 13th to 8th
    Billingsley - 2nd to 3rd

Anderson/Hester started displaying this week as well and introduce OU at 7th. A Texas win will help as they are currently ranked 9th in the BCS up from 18th last week.
