I have heard of ideas of drug testing those that need welfare or section 8 housing. Would this idea reduce crime in the area?

It could reduce crime everwhere. As I've mentioned previously, I work in Warr Acres and live in OKC nearby. Crime is not a big problem that I've noticed as compared to other areas. Maybe people who live in some of these complexes have some concerns but I think that's as much of a result of the density of the apartments as it is about who lives there. Larger populations bring more crime no matter who lives there.

My main gripe against Warr Acres right now is the development they allowed behind the new Marriott east of MacArthur. They allowed construction of small, small homes and duplexes last I saw. Instant slums next to what is a relatively nice area of larger ranch homes. This city has plenty of small houses......

In most cases,city zoning laws don't apply to the size of houses being constructed, only to the type of development (housing, industrial, commercial). Multifamily dwellings would be different. It's the developer's themselves that set that standard. I haven't checked and don't know for sure but that area has probably been zoned for housing for many years and there was little that could be done. After a developer purchases property, it's difficult for the city to go in and change the zoning to something else to avoid the type of development he might start.
