    Plaza District Size Records closing

OKC's beloved Size Records to close doors this month | News OK

Didn't think it would happen this soon. I know all the reasons behind it (known Jim for decades), and it's totally understandable, props to them for staying around so long, still a massive bummer...

So guessing The Conservatory is closing too? I've also known Jim for 25 or so years. Hate to see this happen.

Hmm, guessing we might've run into each other at Size at some point, unknowingly... Conservatory is being taken over by their sound man for a while, then I think they'll sell it to him outright. Yeah, I hate it too, wish the metro could've supported them *and* Guestroom...

Damn, that's sad. I used to buy metal CDs there often, before they condensed all their CDs into one messy section so they could focus on vinyl and other hipstery things. Bought my first Black Metal CD back around '95 or '96 at Music Dimensions when it was at SW 44th and Penn (that's an early pre-incarnation of Size Recs, for those who didn't know). Followed him from two different locations in that same shopping center, then up to 16th and Meridian, then to the Western District near Sushi Neko.

I too made it to every one of those locations. Jim's ex-wife is one of my oldest friends in OKC, and I enjoyed watching those guys build that store and the live music scene. People have no idea how many great bands did in-store appearances there, which ultimately grew into Conservatory shows after the Green Door vacated.

I've seen some killer shows at the Conservatory...some of the greatest gigs I've ever witnessed. YOB played there back in '05 and blew the roof off. Saw Graves at Sea opening for Khanate in '04, and Witchcraft back around '08.

It's funny, I've known the dude since around 1995 and never knew his name. Jim's the fellow with the long hair and beard? Every time I see him we talk like old friends, but never actually swapped names.

A store that sells music stored on physical media is going out of business? Color me shocked.

I still enjoy putting a vinyl on the turntable.

Oh, and there are *plenty* of stores around that sell CDs and vinyl quite successfully. Check out Aquarius Records or Amoeba Records in SF, or Sonic Boom in your neck of the woods, or Reckless and Dusty Groove in Chicago, as well as *tons* of smaller places around. I believe Size's problem was that they didn't advertise much (if at all), have enough new (brand-new, not just "new to them") product consistently, and the stores aren't quite as inviting to customers as they should've been. Bought thousands of dollars of stuff from them over the years, but they just needed more money to make more improvements to stay on top of the game...

It is interesting that LP/EP sales percent went from .2% to 3% from '93 to '13. The market exploded! or something.

Yeah, that's another problem they've had - inconsistent hours. I learned to call or text first to make sure he was open, but for normal customers, not being open posted hours ain't cool. I think he updates the facebook page if he's going to be closed, but not always...
