    Default Oklahoma Mass Murder Avoided?

Who knows if this kid was serious but the authorities did the right thing.

Pretty sure he was serious. That is the problem with the mentally ill, they are mentally ill. Also, does anyone else think he looks like a young Nosferatu?

Of course, his parents didn't seem to have any control over their son either as they were unaware of his activities, including keeping a shotgun and 250 rounds of ammo in his bedroom. Parents need to wake up. We know every square inch of kids bedrooms and every single item in them. They can have privacy when they move out.

He sounds mentally ill. Whenever you have family members giving out information, you know you've got a situation and talking like that to the cabbie is either a cry for help or this kid was in some sort of diminished mental state. The stuff he ordered really wasn't particularly frightening or suspicious in type or in quantity. In fact, other than the comments (and the things mentioned by his family after the arrest), nothing listed in the article seems particularly frightening. Well, upon re-reading, I see that he lied to get the weapons but I wasn't clear what the lies were. I'm willing to bet there is a lot more out there that his family knew about but didn't address - unless the kid just had a sudden onset of schizophrenia, which often hits near his age. That the lied to get the weapons sounds like he wasn't having a mental break, though. He clearly knew enough to know he had to lie about something.

@Penny, the lies where on the application. It asks about your mental state, at the time, he was meeting with a psychiatrist, and he lied about that as well as some of the things he was being treated for.

Yeah, accurate self reporting is probably a lot to expect from someone planning to go on a killing rampage. And I am not sure what they actually asked him. Typically, it would be more along the lines of, "Have you ever been hospitalized for a serious mental illness" rather than, "Are you seeing a counselor or psychologist in relation to a mental illness?" If we stigmatize or penalize someone with even a mild mental illness - like your typical depression - plenty will refuse to get help or even admit they are struggling. Tough situation and no easy or complete solutions.

I'm certain I went to high school with this kid's grand dad. Don't know much about the case but I still have many relatives in Woodward. From my viewpoint, even though some think it's jumping the gun, better safe than sorry (no pun intended.)

I wonder if The Cab Driving Confidant in this case looked anything like this . . .
