  1. Default World's Best Hot Dog

I like a really good hot dog as much as the next guy, but the offering is not really up to par in OKC. Yeah, you got your Coney Island dogs downtown on Main and in Capitol Hill, and there used to be a goo place way out west on NW 23rd, but not really any gormet kind of hot dog joint here anymore.

I had the Chicago Dog at The Prohibition Room about a month ago and it was OK . . . just OK . . . not great just OK . . . Fenway Park dog was also just OK.

The best hot dogs I have ever had have been from street vendors in big cities like Chicago, New York etc. There was a little start up vendor in Bricktown about ten years back, but Big Jim Brewer made their life so miserable that they folded up . . . so no great gormet dogs in OKC.

My brotherinlaw was in Boston a couple of weeks ago and he ate at this place . . . Speed's Hot Dogs - Boston, MA . . . he's been around a little and claimed that it was by far the best hot dog he had ever eaten. The weinners (more like sausages) were soaked in cider and then grilled. All kinds of stuff was piled on to dress it. Just check out the reviews for
    Speeds . . . Sounds like it's worth a trip to Boston just for a hot dog . . . damn.
    The Old Downtown Guy

It will take decades for Oklahoma City's
downtown core to regain its lost gritty,
dynamic urban character, but it's exciting
to observe and participate in the transformation.

LMAO....Nobody eats those things on the way into TJ...But everybody's had one on the way out.

I'm fully convinced that they put the "dog" in "hot dog" and that it's not the tequila that made my gut hurt the next day.

The worst I had was the 99 cent footlong at The (Westward) Ho in Vegas. I had a stomachache for a good 6 hours after that.

BTW: I couldn't finish half of it and I'm a big boy.

i had one of those when i was about 10-13. at least I think it was the westward Ho, it may have been one of the other small casinos. it was about 1' long and the hot dog had to be 2" in diameter...it was huge but i didn't get ill after I ate it.

now if i ate that today, i'd be out of work for a week

Anybody tried that new hot dog joint in Moore?

Maybe I'll give that a shot today.

Ate a dog last week from a street vendot at 42nd and Broadway in Manhattan. Hot dog and can of coke for $5. Nothing special, just a hot dog like you might get anywhere.

So I went and at there. Got a polish dog with kraut and a chilidog. Pretty dang tasty. Super simple menu too.

The downtown OKC Interurban $7 hot dog is not bad at all.

maybe i'm thinking of 'old' ones, but i can think of two hot dog joints in moore...

there's gail's on main just west of eastern and there's the dog house on 4th & telephone.

gail's markets itself as 'gourmet' and has several choices of dog along with several choices on how to dress it. if memory serves, i had a chicago dog with chili, onions & cheese and i thought it was right tasty... but then again, i'm really not a discerning hot dog connaisseur.

the dog house, when i visited, was really run-of-the-mill. they pretty much used an oscar meyer wiener in a store bought bun... as in i could see the product wrappers behind the prep counter. i went not long after they opened which was probably around a year ago... perhaps they've since improved, but i wasn't all that impressed.

Yeah, it was The Dog House I went to...And it was exactly as you described. G/F had nachos, and they were Tostitos and melted cheese.

But I like regular old hotdogs I can make at the house quite a bit, so I'm not hard to impress.

Guess it wasn't all that and a bag of chips...I'll try the other one some other time.

Ballpark Angus Beef hotdogs on my grill!

don't get me wrong, i'd never diss a regular old hotdog... nothing wrong at all with oscar meyer & wonder bread. guess that's why i say i'm no hot dog connaisseur. it's just hard for me to justify spending around $2.50 on something i can whip up at home in less than five minutes for under a buck.

i've always liked grilling hebrew national franks... given that they're kosher, i can expect less funny business with the meat. boar's head makes a pretty good frank, too.

Bill Kamps Meat Market on North Western has some Boar's HEad items, not sure about the franks.

We just put Nathan's dog on the POPS menu...1/4 pound dog, poppyseed bun and mustard chow-chow; pretty tasty.

There used to be a good hot dog joint in Edmond on Boulevard and 2nd.

As far as the best dogs I've had. I'd have to say Rocky's in North Miami Beach makes a meannnnnnnn dog and cheese fries are the best I've had anywhere. The guy that owns it is a New Orleans transplant. I hear it's no longer in Miami Beach from a friend who lives there.

Also Papaya Dogs in NYC is a must eat and a classic NYC staple. Nothing like a papaya dog and a papaya smoothie for under 5 bucks! mmmmmm

There is a new hot dog joint, HOT DOG PARK, on NW Classen and about 30th. I wrote another thread on it somewhere, have yet to eat there though.

Gray's Papaya, to me, was a total disappointment. I went to 2 different locations in one day!!! Maybe their "COMPANY" was having a bad day...is this possible. Smoothie was great.

I saw a street vendor selling hot dogs on Friday night in Bricktown across from StarBucks - Frank's Franks. Didn't see anyone buying, so I didn't partake.

You can also get Boars Head meats at Falcone's. You used to could get it at Gaetano's too but unfortunately they are no longer in business. I've seen Boars Head meats elsewhere but I can't remember where.

You can also buy them at the Gourmet Deli on Western.

On one trip some years back to NYC, I remember eating at some fine restaurants. But my favorite meal of all was a dog from a street vendor on a crisp cold December day. I do wish we had them available here like that. I've been looking for some years. Tuck yours sounds pretty good, what restaurant do you mean when you say Pops?

My homemade is pretty good: Hebrew National weiners baked in the oven, then split and a strip of cheddar inserted and put back in to melt. Hot Hormel chili, Sara Lee bun opened and a line of mustard, chow chow and fresh crisp sweet onions. The grill is better but the oven is my version of fast food.
