Well, there are quite a few. There is one that specializes in meat, breads and tamales on NW 23rd about two blocks west of Meridian. There is also Buy For Less which is like walking into old Mexico grocery stores (especially the one on NW 36th and MacArthur. I believe there may be a few more along N. MacArthur or N. Rockwell in that general area (from NW 23rd south to I-40). There are tons of them south of I-40. Also Braums carries a couple varietes of tamales in their grocery section, not sure how good they are, but I see people buying them up all the time.

Damn... this is a little late. I know for Xmas, and possibly for new years, Cafe Antigua on Classen was taking orders for the holidays for tamales. They may still be making them. In a lot of Latin America, Tamales or Pasteles, depending on where you are from are kind of Christmas-only dish.

Okay, I found the BESTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT tamales over the weekend. My wife and I ventured out to the old farmers market on Saturday, near Exchange Ave. and Klein. Most of the vendors were Hispanic vendors and had lots of fresh produce and hispanic type products. There were also tons of flower vendors as well. After shopping around, walking back to the car we saw a lady who had just sat up her booth selling fresh made tamales and fresh squeezed lemonade. Luckily she was still setting up and we were her first customers. The tamales were still piping hot from her oven. She has 3 kinds, cheese & jalapeno, chicken, or pork. She also sells burritos and breakfast burritos. I had the cheese (some sort of white mexican cheese, not sure what kind she used) and jalapeno and my wife got the chicken. Both were excellent!!! Hands down the best tamales I've ever had. They are $5 for 3, $8 for 6 or $14 for a dozen. You have to order in these quantities and you can't mix and match since she has them prepackaged. The sizes are generous and again these are hands down amazing! The fresh lemonade was good too although a little to sweet for my tastes. This experience totally made my day. I'll be stocking up on them next time!

Thanks for the heads up. I usually get the veggie tamales from the soup soup lady at Crescent Market. I usually have a hard time finding non meat tamales but looks like you found another source.

Not sure the hours, go to the link I posted above and it will tell you the hours and exact location of the old Farmers Market. She was about halfway through it on the main street on the righthand (east) side in front of an old adobe abandoned building. She has a table out front under the shade with a white/red checkered tablecloth and a big jar of fresh lemonade. I would guess around 10am-4pm or something like that.

Wow, I went to the Buy 4 less on 36th and Macarthur tonite and bought a dozen tamales, they are delicious!

If the lady at the Farmers Market are better I will be jumping for joy, but it is going to be tough to beat.

I think the ones at the farmer's market are very very tough to beat. But I went out there the last two weeks and didn't see her. She said she'd be back every week from around 10-2 or so, but I didn't see her when I ran by. Hopefully she'll be back tomorrow.

duncandl, what kind of tamales do they have at Buy4 Less? Are they fresh or frozen. These were fresh piping hot out of the lady's oven at the farmer's market. It's hard to beat fresh.

They are ready to eat, and very fresh last night when I had mine.

The only kind they had was what the lady was calling peppers with cheese, I am not sure if they carry other varieties or not as it was my first time to visit. I will be heading back soon and will keep ya posted.

You guys are killin' me here! I grew up on those tamales in a can, the ones filled with some kind of dog-food like beef paste. One day 25 years ago a guy from work with the last name Navarro brought in some "real" tamales that his mother made. I tried one out of courtesy, not realizing that I was about to taste my first real tamale. It had shredded beef in it. OMG it was good. You never forget your first real tamale. ;-)

duncandi, where in the store (Buy For Less) are the fresh tamales? I want to go run and get some. The lady at the farmer's market hasn't been there in 3 weeks and it's driving me crazy. That's the only time I've had or heard of the peppers and cheese tamales and boy were they good. Be nice if BFL has those too so they can be my back up tamales.

    1. Go in store
    2. Take immediate right
    3. Cut thru the produce section on the North side of the store
    4. Mexican food court type of place on far NW corner of store.
    5. Read menu posted on the wall, realize nothing in english.
    6. Point at tamales and ask what kind

Lol, that is what I did and lemme tell ya, they is gooooooooooood!

Good luck and if they have a different kind let me know, ok!?!

The Braums tamales are pretty good, not AMAZING though. I've tried the beef and the pork ones, and they taste the same to me. They are frozen as well.

duncandi, I finally went and tried the Buy For Less cheese and peppers tamales. They are okay at best. They had just finished making them so they were hot and fresh. They helped my craving for them, but they are NOWHERE near close to the ones I got at the Old Farmer's Market.

I went back and tried the pork tamales the next week, I didn't like them as well as the cheese and jalapeno ones.

I am looking forward to trying the tamales at the Farmers Market, especially if they are a lot better.

I haven't tried Braums but will look next time I go.
