Inspiration for art is everywhere. Artists were inspired by the images of cars, bikes, trains, trucks, and tricycles for a new exhibit "Wheels" on display beginning April 17. The exhibition is in the Invited Artists Gallery in The Underground, Downtown Oklahoma City. The exhibition is free and open to the public with an opening reception on April 17, noon-1:30 pm. "Wheels" is on display Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. through June 30.

Devon Energy is the sponsor of this and a series of art exhibitions in the below street level gallery organized by Downtown OKC Inc.

Featured artists of the "Wheels" exhibit are Doris Bewley, Angela Castro, Tünde Darvay, Bob Gurfinkel, Burt Harbison, Regina Murphy, George Oswalt, Romy Owens, Delaney Sheffield, and Jesse Whittle. The exhibition is curated by Julia Kirt, director of the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition.

"The Underground is reminiscent of a public transit space in other cities so I thought the transportation themed artwork made sense." said Julia Kirt, curator of the show and director of the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition. "The Wheels exhibition sits between underground parking and pedestrian tunnels and cars pass over on the street above. "

Already an aesthetic experience, The Underground is the recently renovated Conncourse. Architects from Elliott + Associates transformed the space with ambient lighting, clear directional signage, and, now, artwork exhibitions. The Invited Artists Gallery sits underneath the intersection of Robinson and Robert S. Kerr with entrances from all adjacent buildings.

The Invited Artist Gallery is sponsored by Devon Energy Corporation and managed by Downtown OKC. These quarterly exhibitions improve the experience of visitors to the Underground Tunnels through artwork. Furthermore, the exhibitions draw attention to the thriving arts culture in Oklahoma City. The gallery can be accessed through any of the Underground entrances, but the nearest access point is at the corner of Robert S. Kerr Blvd and Robinson.
