Generals64 12-25-2008, 10:40 PM I still have what's left of a Dick Tracey snub nose. My daughter threw it at a spider, and broke the cylinder.:kicking: I carried that thing to kindergarten in the shoulder holster. Imagine doing that now. Mattel made good stuff back then.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey:..I've still got a Fanner 50......if you ever come to one of the monthly meetings, bring the Snub Nose, I would love to see it..
MonkeyBiz6903 12-26-2008, 01:12 PM Well it might take some doing to find it. Got me thinking so looked for on the net. Found this. 1960s Mattel SHOOTIN' SHELL SNUB-NOSE .38 Toy Cap Gun by davidrmj1 (http://www.blujay.com/?page=ad&adid=2618190&cat=7180000) I had a couple of Fanner .50's first one the cylinder turned. Second one would not. My dad threw away my toy guns. Had Johnny Eagle lieutenant, M-14 and 1911 .45. And the Johnny Seven OMA one man army. Think they are all collectors items now. I have a 59 Tonka fire truck, and Lionel locomotive. I need to get outta there before they get thrown out too.

you know, about the only toy I ever really got directly from my dad was Black Baseball Bat.....Kept that thing forever....My oldest son thought he needed a "Billy Club" so he cut it in half......He really did need one after that.......

the guy that goes by "The Village Idiot" is probably the closest thing to a brother I ever had....Really, other than my wife of 43 years, is the best friend a guy could have. He still has most of his toys from our younger, younger days. Before you were born..he still has some of his old trophy winning (doncene's)
model cars.....Great memories.....
grantgeneral78 02-03-2009, 10:31 PM remember nicolosis on n`w 10th...man now that was some good stuff.
Prunepicker 02-03-2009, 10:42 PM Does anybody remember the Monkey Guerrilla army toys? I had some of that.
I also had the Mattel rifle that had a cylinder like a 6 shooter. It shot those spring
loaded bullets and you stuck the Greenie Stickem's on them.
I had the Johnny Rebel cannon, too. And a toy bazooka, and King Zoar, Big Lou,
Robot Commando, Odd Ogg...
gen70 02-04-2009, 03:09 PM remember nicolosis on n`w 10th...man now that was some good stuff.
I remember it well, used to eat there quite a bit,it was real good and I don't like Italian food that much.

Hey guy, go to Bella Vista just north of 59th and S. Western....Mega good...
westsidesooner 02-04-2009, 04:01 PM Does anyone out there remember the real snows that we had in the 50's and 60's. I can remember in childhood days some of the most intense snowball fights ever. then someone would pput a rock in one and then the reall fights occured......No one knew how those rocks ended up in the snowballs. I remember building big snowmen...so big we couldn't pick the head up for the top snowball. We recruited everyone moms, dads, brothers...people we didn't even know to help us finish the snowmen. Does anyone else remember that or am I slipping?
I do, the winter of 67-68. Sw 59 was completely closed down.:053:
I was thinking about this the other day. My brother and I were talkng about snow when we were kids and remembered a huge snow storm (I dont remember the year but this sounds about right). I don't remember how much snow fell but I do remember and have pictures of my brother and I on top of a snowdrift beside our house in nw okc that was as tall as the eve. Thats at least 8 feet. There were several more drifts in our yard at least 4 feet deep burying the cars. I guess there must have been alot of wind with that storm to make drifts that high. It was a a blast. Seems like it always snowed when we were kids.....whatever happened to that, the kids today are getting ripped off. Anyone have any records/pictures of that storm???

records/pictures of that storm?
I remember it well. The storm was 1967. Dad picked us up from school and it
took almost 2 hours to get home. There are photos of my siblings and I. We dug
hole into the drifts. I was for anything that closed school. Gosh I hated school.
We were all joking that a Fresca truck must have had a wreck.
angel27 02-05-2009, 12:17 PM I remember it well too. I had bought my first car, my VW bug and worked at TGY 411. I remember how high the snow, and all the cars lined up slowly making their way, and me in my bug zipping along so well. Everything was so beautiful drenched in that snow.
FRISKY 02-05-2009, 12:44 PM The snowflakes were really big when that happened.
Prunepicker 02-05-2009, 12:57 PM ...I remember how high the snow, and all the cars lined up slowly making their
way...
The best part of that storm was NO SCHOOL! I absolutely loved not going to
school.
danielf1935 02-05-2009, 01:25 PM How many of you had your picture taken, setting on a pony , by a man/couple that roamed neighborhoods, going door to door. I did, the date on the picture in June 13, 1964, Now that I think about it, it was somewhat cruel, they would put an ugly, oversized vest and a one size fit's most cowboy hat on you and tell you to ----smile.

Made me dig, but, mine is dated May 1954.....Made a deal with the guy that owned the pony. Every kid I got to come and get his picture made I got to ride the pony around the house once......Had a long day riding the pony....Made, you're digging way back

You must have done the pony thing also...I can see you know with the goofy hatt, the quirky smile, the red bandana, the Holstein cow chaps with a worn out Shetland pony and all of sudden the magical words..."SMILE"..then NEXT...or wheres' your mother???? the picture was $2.00....the memories were priceless... I'd pay to see your Pony Picture......Hey, what happened to this thread today???
USG '60 02-05-2009, 10:23 PM It was out to lunch......... so to speak.
gen70 02-06-2009, 09:33 AM I got my picture on the pony in about 1954.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
You guys got me digging and I dug the old picture out....Whew, that old pony was hurting....Black and White paint....Today here would have to be $1,000,000.00 liable insurance policies readily available...PETA would have to be there...The photographers union would have to be there...you would have to have a state tax Number and have a bale of alfalfa waiting (along with water) at every house that the pictures would be taken.
danielf1935 02-06-2009, 04:52 PM Does anyone remember the Jolly Roger ice cream truck, I do, we would all be outside playing sand lot baseball and as soon as we heard the the music, we would drop our gloves and head to the curb.

I forgot all about that! A friend of mine's dad had one of those.
Don't you mean that ANY sound of ANY ice cream truck had you heading for the
curb! Of course you all had your hands signaling it to stop, as though the driver
was going to pass a dozen kids :lol2:
Generals64 02-06-2009, 05:49 PM ding...ding....that's the sound today and you have to ask in Spanish to get an Ice Cream...My favorite is the coconut. Jack's was located just N. of 59th st. on the West side of Pennsylvania....Surely you remember Prunerpicker...

Was it near Gerald's Donuts? It escapes me. Maybe we didn't eat there.

It was right about where the entrance sign is located right now....They had a notorious back room inthe other days. It was a free standing building I think...I do know it wasn't hooked to the Center.
Double Edge 02-06-2009, 07:00 PM Zoo Keys?
They had audio about the animals at different locations in the zoo that would play if you had the plastic key to turn them on. Early '60s. If memory serves.
The ship model on the third floor of the downtown library. Made in the '30s I think.
I never missed a chance to take the elevator up and see it. After the move, I inquired at the administrative offices and was told it is in storage due to no space to show it off. That's just wrong.

A red elephant on a key chain! Foreman Scotty and several other TV personalities
pushed them. They cost 50 cents. I think I might have one, but no clue where to
start looking.

No but I remember a Jolly Roger restaurant at 23rd & Ann Arbor.
Eldestof4 02-06-2009, 08:26 PM " ...[?].../
....tell fascinating things about the animals you'll find/
Storybooks* and zookeys together guide you through/
A world of new excitement awaits you at the zoo."
The TV jingle, as much as I can recall (and somehow have never forgotten.)
*I think the idea was that the yellow(?) speaker boxes we unlocked with the zoo keys were the storybooks.

My grandmother was the key-keeper but there were none in her effects when she died. I've looked for one at garage and estate sales unsuccessfully for years.

Jacks Steak House, was owned by Jack Cornellus. He had a 56' Continental Mark II, just like Elvis.

Generals64 02-07-2009, 04:50 PM I would agree.
Just good food but, was it ever "Smokey" in that place.....There seemed to have been a card game or two in the back huh Red/Gen?...I can't believe Prunepicker never went there...I'm sure 60 and 70 have been there.... How about the old Pizza Planet just north of there....Good place to eat back in the younger days..

There was a Pizza Planet on S. Pennsylvania? Down from Jack's?
Huh?

Surely my friend, you dine there along with all the other Grant socialites during your teen age years.....I'll bet that you even ate at Kip's Big Boy restaurant with the Special Sauce dripping all over your favorite shirt while on a date with the prettiest girl you have even seen.......No wait a minute I think that was me....
gen70 02-08-2009, 09:27 AM I loved Pizza Planet but, I cannot remember Jack's and it's driving me crazy. Please tell me exact location.
Caboose 02-08-2009, 12:26 PM I grew up south of the metro but would make the drive with one parent or the other to North OKC pretty much weekly. My most prevalent memory is actually that of road construction on I-35. I am pretty sure that the past year or so is the only time in my life that some part of I-35 between the Shields exit and Downtown was not under construction, and I am 32.
danielf1935 02-08-2009, 12:35 PM I remember going to Wedgewood amusement park, we lived just east of Grant Square shopping center, seemd like it took for ever to get there. I liked Wedgewood, but Springlake was my favorite. I also remember going to a drive in theater, is was just down the road from Wedgewood, it had a playground that kids could play on before the movies started.
gen70 02-08-2009, 01:05 PM When I was in highschool we had our graduation party at the 14-Flags drive-in.
Martin 02-08-2009, 01:12 PM ^
by the time i was a kid, 14-flags had been torn down. while the housing addition with the same name had been built around it, the area that had been the screen was still an open field. i used to shoot model rockets in that field. they've since filled that space with houses, though.

Maybe the NW Hi-Way Drive-In (http://www.drive-ins.com/theater/oktnwhi) where the Marriott is at Independence, I don't remember that one but I do remember the Cinema 70 Drive-In (http://www.drive-ins.com/theater/oktcin3) was where the Hertz and old Service Merchandise/Chili's was on NW Expressway, I don't remember a playground but it might have had one. I know one that did was the Twilight Gardens Drive-In (http://www.drive-ins.com/theater/okttwil) where The Collonade center is in The Village just north of Britton on May across from the old Jackie Cooper BMW.

Double Edge 02-08-2009, 08:16 PM I remember seeing what must have the NW Highway Drive-In as one of the sites from the rotating restaurant at the top of Founders Tower when it first opened.

I don't remember a Pizza Planet on S. Pennsylvania. There was one in MWC and
on NW 23rd.
I ate a Kip's! Not that often but it was good.
Prunepicker 02-08-2009, 08:29 PM When I was in highschool we had our graduation party at the 14-Flags drive-

We called them after parties. I attended several...
Prunepicker 02-08-2009, 08:37 PM ... by the time i was a kid, 14-flags had been torn down.
That was probably because of all the graduation parties...

You did see the NW Highway Drive-In from the Chandelle Club!
Redskins/General 02-08-2009, 08:41 PM I loved Pizza Planet but, I cannot remember Jack's and it's driving me crazy. Please tell me exact location.
Jack's Steak House was small, it was located on South Penn on the west side of the street about 1/2 block North of S.W. 59th. It was there for years. Just to the south of it would have been Big Giant Muffler and then a little sleezy bar! Hope that helps!!
FRISKY 02-08-2009, 11:58 PM We called them after parties. I attended several...I still have an old flyer for a Grant '70s after-party.
danielf1935 02-09-2009, 04:02 AM We moved to Tuttle when I was in the 9th grade, if we had a school dance/prom, we had to have it some where in OKC, Tuttle had a very big Baptist influence, and we couldn't dance in a public setting in Tuttle. MY HOW TIMES HAVE CHANGED.
gen70 02-09-2009, 07:01 AM Jack's Steak House was small, it was located on South Penn on the west side of the street about 1/2 block North of S.W. 59th. It was there for years. Just to the south of it would have been Big Giant Muffler and then a little sleezy bar! Hope that helps!!
Thanks R/G! Now I remember the place, I used to eat breakfast there sometimes. That sleazy bar was called the Devil's Den. When I was growing up I thought there must be some bad things going on in there. When I was around 30 years old I went in the place just to check it out...just a dive.
gen70 02-09-2009, 07:13 AM We called them after parties. I attended several...
I remember my parents taking the whole family to the Cinema 70 Drive-in on the opening night. Years later I went to a Grant after party there that was one wild party, many people were arrested, and their names were printed on the front page of the newspaper. Don't remember the year (68-69?) but I got in big trouble just for being there.
Generals64 02-11-2009, 08:04 PM Hey, Now we all have to keep on going, I'm not quite as adventurous of some of you. Or, we just didn't try some of those things...lol.....The reason Grant only played in one out of state football game was the year I was a Junior the team demolished the Motel they were staying at..
Prunepicker 02-11-2009, 09:56 PM ... The reason Grant only played in one out of state football game was the year I

That was unusual for a public school to play a game in another state. Some of
the private schools played out of state games.
Who'd we play? Tulsa?
bluedogok 02-11-2009, 10:46 PM For a Central Oklahoma public school, it is a bit unusual. Some of the ones near the borders have rivalries with schools across the border. My parents grew up in Altus and Vernon, Texas was a big rival and they still play each other most years. Of course, they are closer to each other than some of the in-state district games.
The Old Downtown Guy 02-11-2009, 11:06 PM Jack had absolutely the best salad dressing in the world.
It was good 60, but so was Nicolosi's Ranch House dressing. I remember Jack's as being creamy with quite a garlic kick to it and the salads having grated chedder sprinkled on. Nicolosi's was lighter with some sweetness, but a tangy finish.
Michael
Pray For World Peace . . . pass it on
Generals64 02-12-2009, 07:32 AM I think Grant played Jacksonville, Texas. The players ripped the sinks off the walls in the bathroom etc.. etc.. Shot themselves in the foot. they didn't get to go again. When thinking about Highschool football...I remember the fights at the round house at Capitol Hill. Most of them were quick but there were plenty.
Huh? red/Gen.......?????
