Oh I loved Twillight Beach I believe I went there the summer of 57 & 1958, I would go at night with my good looking, black haired boy friend.
Sure brings back good fun memories!! As I'm going on 70, & can still remember that far back. And we also had good cool music back in the 50s!!!

Soul Boutique, I think, was at 23&Classen for a while.

I don't remember Wilcox, but do remember Rainbow Records and later,
Peaches.
Soul boutique took over after some clothing store that used the
ecology flag on their sacks. I don't remember the name. They sold
upscale hippy apparel. Can't remember the store that was there
for many years. A drug store?

Wilcox's was just west of N. Classen on N.W. 23rd. It was a
converted house and Dr. Goodhead, optometrist, was next door.
Wilcox moved to where Pier 1 is now on N. Pennsylvania. It was
an outstanding record shop.

I worked a Peaches in the late 70's because I knew classical music.
I couldn't believe how unknowledgeable the staff was on any
musical topic. I honestly believe that the credentials for being
a manager was the size of your record collection.

Was it The Jeanery? Ha! Think that was a few blocks east of Classen, perhaps.

was definitely at N.W. 23rd and Classen. I bought my first 'pro rock
star' clothing there. One shirt was close to $10!

The more I think of it, I believe it moved east near Mother's and it's
colors became red, white and blue.

Del Rancho!! I worked at the Del Rancho in Moore, it was my first job as soon as I turned sixteen. One of the owners at the time was Tom Jones who was later killed when his stunt plane went down during the OKC airshow that used to be held at Will Rogers airport. I couldn't wait to turn sixteen so I could go to work there, I still have a menu (circa 1977) with all of my notes written on it. Great memories!

Oh, my gosh. My two brothers and I loved Foreman Scotty and Danny Williams. Don't remember Bob Jenny. Ho Ho The Clown kind of rings a bell. I loved Superman and Leave It To Beaver. I still watch reruns of Beaver in the mornings. I remember O'Mealies, Coit's, and Del Rancho. Used to go to Wedgewood Amusement Park but not often--couldn't afford it. Went to Frontier City when my uncle would take us. I had a highschool teacher (Oklahoma History) that played one of the gun fighters at Frontier City. Never heard of the two games you won.

They do have a hickory burger on the menu but their specialty is the Steak Sandwich Supreme.

Just how long has Charcoal oven been in existence? I remember playing youth baseball in Enid in 1959, and when we would play an OKC team we would usually go to Charcoal Oven post game to eat.

Thank you for responding, Jim. I do remember the Charcoal Oven on NW Expressway. I ate there a couple of times. I just remember the Hickory Burger was great--wherever it was.

And, that Sound Warehouse that was on 39th and MacArthur started out on 10th and MacArthur. I helped move that store to the 39th location and then went to work at the corporate headquarters (Bromo Distributors)

It was in what was then called the Cedar City Shopping Center, just north of 10th on the east side of MacArthur. I think it's a bingo hall now.


That Sound Warehouse opened in May of 1976 but moved not long thereafter to 39th & MacArthur; I believe around 1978 and certainly no later that 1979.

You may remember that also in Cedar City was Jimmie Jo's Old Spaghetti Warehouse.

Pete has the location right, it was in a building that fronted MacArthur next to the parking lot for Quicksilvers. I think that one was store 105, fifth store in the chain. The number stayed with it when it moved down to 38th & MacArthur.

Hey, you remember the store numbers as well as I do. I probably can even remember the phone numbers for most of them. I think I worked at or filled in at almost all of them at various times. I still miss those days sometimes.

The locations listed were as of 83-84 when I worked there, the only locations that I knew of back then was MacArthur and May locations because those are the ones that we went to. There might have been several that moved around that I have no idea of the previous location.

Since the advent of cell phones my phone number memory is pretty poor, since I don't have to actually remember the number. I have to look up numbers all the time on my phone, it is easy to remember my parents number since they have had it since 1965.

Walking back and forth between grandma at 3300 NW 42nd and Independence and granparents on 4805 Independence.

Great memories. I, too, loved Lady Classen. I remember how disappointed I
was when they closed 2 weeks for Christmas and New Years. Of course, they
deserved it. What a wonderful cafeteria.

The Rose Glo still has rooms for rent upstairs over the club. Have wondered how that place has stayed open mainly because of its location. I think it is the only bar/club on 29th that has not turned into a Latino joint......

I have fond memories of Larsen Music, Driver Music in Bethany, and Rock World.

Of course now, Guitar Center is better than all three combined, but I can remember how it felt to go in there as a kid, watching some long-hair play guitar, with a cigarette placed on an ashtray on the amp. Seems like you could just go in and light up decades ago.

Maya was a popular band back in the late 70's. I'm not sure I know how to spell her name, but their singer, Cheryl Bonzak came into Der Dutchman one night, sat in and sang "Desperado", and I've never been the same since. She knocked the walls out with it.

I remember KOFM well, It was a decent rock station. . . until Lester Micheals played "Another One Bites The Dust" SEVEN times in a row one night. They lost me as a listener for good with that stunt.

My family memories include going to Shotgun Sam's Pizza on May, several times. I remember the window where you could watch them make the pizza. For one of those trips, I have strong memories of going to see JAWS and hearing the song "Rhinestone Cowboy" on the radio, over and over again. I think that would have made it 1975.

Non-family memories involve bus rides down here for school activities, including visiting the state capital and one or more visits to the zoo. Oddly, my strongest memory of those trips is the construction on I-35. From a kid's perspective, it seemed to always be there, year after year.

We LOVED Shotgun Sam's Pizza. I remember they gave you a big playing card as your number for when your order was ready. They also had some good live music there.

Here's a memory I don't know if a lot of people knew. South of Shotgun Sam's was a pizza place my mom discovered. It was run by former mafia from NYC. We assumed they were in witness protection but they never said. They used to sit in the back and eat Italian food at a big round table like you see in movies. This was just before a mafia witness "dumped" in OKC went on Larry King to complain about the witness protection program and that they were dumping them in OKC were they would meet up. Just after this they shutdown.
