Dollie 02-05-2012, 09:30 PM Oh I loved Twillight Beach I believe I went there the summer of 57 & 1958, I would go at night with my good looking, black haired boy friend.
Sure brings back good fun memories!! As I'm going on 70, & can still remember that far back. And we also had good cool music back in the 50s!!!
Prunepicker 02-05-2012, 10:06 PM Soul Boutique, I think, was at 23&Classen for a while.
I don't remember Wilcox, but do remember Rainbow Records and later,
Peaches.
Soul boutique took over after some clothing store that used the
ecology flag on their sacks. I don't remember the name. They sold
upscale hippy apparel. Can't remember the store that was there
for many years. A drug store?
Wilcox's was just west of N. Classen on N.W. 23rd. It was a
converted house and Dr. Goodhead, optometrist, was next door.
Wilcox moved to where Pier 1 is now on N. Pennsylvania. It was
an outstanding record shop.
I worked a Peaches in the late 70's because I knew classical music.
I couldn't believe how unknowledgeable the staff was on any
musical topic. I honestly believe that the credentials for being
a manager was the size of your record collection.
boscorama 02-06-2012, 08:59 PM Was it The Jeanery? Ha! Think that was a few blocks east of Classen, perhaps.
There was another clothing store named Threads.

There was another clothing store named Threads.
That's it! It may have been or moved to another location but it
was definitely at N.W. 23rd and Classen. I bought my first 'pro rock
star' clothing there. One shirt was close to $10!
The more I think of it, I believe it moved east near Mother's and it's
colors became red, white and blue.
I'll do a search and come back with some answers.
Prunepicker 02-06-2012, 09:19 PM I hope nobody gets cancer from this ad. It's from 1971.
There was an outlet at 57th and S. Penn.

Prunepicker 02-06-2012, 09:22 PM Here's an ad when The Jeanery went bankrupt. There were six
stores.

boscorama 02-07-2012, 09:03 PM That's wonderful!!!! The ads, I mean. Those movie theatres, woo hoo! The Jeanery ad is great. I forgot all about callling them BELLS. Thank you.

I believe bell bottoms and leisure suits caused cancer of the brain.

No, Prune, I think it was the other way around!
Prunepicker 02-07-2012, 11:18 PM No, Prune, I think it was the other way around!
Too funny!
BoPeep 02-08-2012, 08:32 AM Del Rancho!! I worked at the Del Rancho in Moore, it was my first job as soon as I turned sixteen. One of the owners at the time was Tom Jones who was later killed when his stunt plane went down during the OKC airshow that used to be held at Will Rogers airport. I couldn't wait to turn sixteen so I could go to work there, I still have a menu (circa 1977) with all of my notes written on it. Great memories!
janeyring 05-11-2012, 03:12 PM Oh, my gosh. My two brothers and I loved Foreman Scotty and Danny Williams. Don't remember Bob Jenny. Ho Ho The Clown kind of rings a bell. I loved Superman and Leave It To Beaver. I still watch reruns of Beaver in the mornings. I remember O'Mealies, Coit's, and Del Rancho. Used to go to Wedgewood Amusement Park but not often--couldn't afford it. Went to Frontier City when my uncle would take us. I had a highschool teacher (Oklahoma History) that played one of the gun fighters at Frontier City. Never heard of the two games you won.

ljbab728 05-12-2012, 09:28 PM I remember Del Rancho too because I ate there today.
janeyring 05-13-2012, 12:06 AM Was Del Rancho the place that served Hickory Burgers? They were delicious.

They do have a hickory burger on the menu but their specialty is the Steak Sandwich Supreme.
BlackmoreRulz 05-13-2012, 07:11 AM There was a place in Del City called Adam's Rib that had a great Hickory Burger. It was on 29th just east of Sunnylane.
Jim Kyle 05-13-2012, 08:30 AM Was Del Rancho the place that served Hickory Burgers? They were delicious. That could have been Charcoal Oven, on NW Expressway between Villa and May. Or it might have been Dolores, on NE 23 just east of the RR underpass.
Just saw an ad on TV last night that Del Rancho has opened a new location near NW 50 and MacArthur!
corpsman 05-13-2012, 09:56 AM Just how long has Charcoal oven been in existence? I remember playing youth baseball in Enid in 1959, and when we would play an OKC team we would usually go to Charcoal Oven post game to eat.

I believe it was 1958 but I'm not sure. It wasn't there when we
moved here in 1957.

Yes, Jim. That's where I ate on Saturday. It used to be a Sonic.
Jim Kyle 05-13-2012, 10:02 PM I thought I remembered a Sonic in about that location, just a bit north of the NW corner of the intersection. I don't get down that way a lot any more...
janeyring 05-14-2012, 12:44 PM Thank you for responding, Jim. I do remember the Charcoal Oven on NW Expressway. I ate there a couple of times. I just remember the Hickory Burger was great--wherever it was.

UncleCyrus 08-24-2012, 02:33 AM And, that Sound Warehouse that was on 39th and MacArthur started out on 10th and MacArthur. I helped move that store to the 39th location and then went to work at the corporate headquarters (Bromo Distributors)
Do you remember which building the Sound Warehouse was in on 10th? When did it move to 39th St.?
Do you remember which building the Sound Warehouse was in on 10th? When did it move to 39th St.?
It was in what was then called the Cedar City Shopping Center, just north of 10th on the east side of MacArthur. I think it's a bingo hall now.
That Sound Warehouse opened in May of 1976 but moved not long thereafter to 39th & MacArthur; I believe around 1978 and certainly no later that 1979.
You may remember that also in Cedar City was Jimmie Jo's Old Spaghetti Warehouse.
bluedogok 08-25-2012, 09:39 PM Pete has the location right, it was in a building that fronted MacArthur next to the parking lot for Quicksilvers. I think that one was store 105, fifth store in the chain. The number stayed with it when it moved down to 38th & MacArthur.
I think that I still remember these.....
101 - 23rd & Walker
102 - 74th & Penn
103 - May & Grand (the store that I worked at)
104 - Air Depot
105 - NW 39th & MacArthur
106 - Norman (Lindsay St.)
107 - NW Expressway & Rockwell (moved up NW Expressway later)
401 - the buttons location at NW 63rd & May
I think Tulsa stores were 200 series and other markets followed the same sort of numbering system. At the time the Dallas stores were owned by someone other than the Dan & Kay Moran but later merged a few years after Dan's death,
BlackmoreRulz 08-26-2012, 05:33 AM The 74th & Penn location was originally on 59th just east of Blackwelder circa 1973 or so

Hey, you remember the store numbers as well as I do. I probably can even remember the phone numbers for most of them. I think I worked at or filled in at almost all of them at various times. I still miss those days sometimes.
bluedogok 08-26-2012, 01:08 PM The 74th & Penn location was originally on 59th just east of Blackwelder circa 1973 or so
The locations listed were as of 83-84 when I worked there, the only locations that I knew of back then was MacArthur and May locations because those are the ones that we went to. There might have been several that moved around that I have no idea of the previous location.
Since the advent of cell phones my phone number memory is pretty poor, since I don't have to actually remember the number. I have to look up numbers all the time on my phone, it is easy to remember my parents number since they have had it since 1965.
purpledice42 10-11-2012, 09:40 PM Walking back and forth between grandma at 3300 NW 42nd and Independence and granparents on 4805 Independence.
Playing at Stars and Stripes park.
TG&Y.
My grandpa's barber shop on 63rd and May.
Coits root beer ice cold mugs!!
And raising the flag for more at Casa Bonita on 39th Expressway and spending the little coins or dollars in the gift shop before leaving.
Oh! And gazing at the twinkling lights of the TV and radio stations towers out there on the NE side and no matter where we went, knowing
we were almost home when we could see them. (Imagine the coincidence of my brother having died in 95 while working for a company that
erects those towers :(:()
Lady Classen cafeteria, rofl! Going there with my grandma and then working there a few months in 87 or 88 maybe.
Prunepicker 10-12-2012, 09:51 PM Purpledice42,
Great memories. I, too, loved Lady Classen. I remember how disappointed I
was when they closed 2 weeks for Christmas and New Years. Of course, they
deserved it. What a wonderful cafeteria.
kmckuen 09-27-2020, 12:50 PM The Rose Glo still has rooms for rent upstairs over the club. Have wondered how that place has stayed open mainly because of its location. I think it is the only bar/club on 29th that has not turned into a Latino joint......
It's still there...A little bit more run down....Love the sign!!! Art deco'ish??

If they can repaint the sign and update the building, it would look good
Sharona21 10-28-2020, 11:25 PM Some more neurons fired after reading some of the posts.
I have fond memories of Larsen Music, Driver Music in Bethany, and Rock World.
Of course now, Guitar Center is better than all three combined, but I can remember how it felt to go in there as a kid, watching some long-hair play guitar, with a cigarette placed on an ashtray on the amp. Seems like you could just go in and light up decades ago.
Maya was a popular band back in the late 70's. I'm not sure I know how to spell her name, but their singer, Cheryl Bonzak came into Der Dutchman one night, sat in and sang "Desperado", and I've never been the same since. She knocked the walls out with it.

whorton 08-30-2024, 05:04 PM I remember KOFM well, It was a decent rock station. . . until Lester Micheals played "Another One Bites The Dust" SEVEN times in a row one night. They lost me as a listener for good with that stunt.
btmec 09-24-2024, 12:42 PM Remember when channel 43 had a after-school host named Zanar or something like that? I still have an autographed picture of him.
Do you remember as a kid when you learned to tune the UHF channels? I remember my parents teaching me and it opened a whole new world. No more 4, 5, 9, and 13. Here came the old reruns of Flipper and Lassie.
corwin1968 09-24-2024, 03:55 PM I don't remember if I have replied to this thread or not. I did not grow up here, but we did visit a few times.
My family memories include going to Shotgun Sam's Pizza on May, several times. I remember the window where you could watch them make the pizza. For one of those trips, I have strong memories of going to see JAWS and hearing the song "Rhinestone Cowboy" on the radio, over and over again. I think that would have made it 1975.
Non-family memories involve bus rides down here for school activities, including visiting the state capital and one or more visits to the zoo. Oddly, my strongest memory of those trips is the construction on I-35. From a kid's perspective, it seemed to always be there, year after year.

We LOVED Shotgun Sam's Pizza. I remember they gave you a big playing card as your number for when your order was ready. They also had some good live music there.
Here's a memory I don't know if a lot of people knew. South of Shotgun Sam's was a pizza place my mom discovered. It was run by former mafia from NYC. We assumed they were in witness protection but they never said. They used to sit in the back and eat Italian food at a big round table like you see in movies. This was just before a mafia witness "dumped" in OKC went on Larry King to complain about the witness protection program and that they were dumping them in OKC were they would meet up. Just after this they shutdown.

And it still is year after year between OKC and the OK/Texas border.
