Hey:...Childhood memories....this has been mentioned before (long ago) but do you remember Kaiser's on 10th and Walker?.....That was some of the best Ice cream.....it's now called "The Grateful Bean"....and it's an ice cream parlor and sandwich shoppe......we ought to meet there some other Saturday for the Old Timers.........If you youngsters don't remember it was fun....
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
For the Guys do you remember going to Sam's Surplus on Agnew and buying the old (WWII) military goods?????Tell the newbies your stories if you do....

Mr. Kaiser was tighter than paint on a barn. My Dad had business dealings
with him. He was a nice really, really, really, really old man.

For the Guys do you remember going to Sam's Surplus on Agnew and buying
the old (WWII) military goods?Tell the newbies your stories if you do...

Hey! I remember buying a pilot's helmet that fit my head. It had speakers in
it! I rewired it and used it for head phones. I'd go to bed with it on.

Then there was the bazooka... it cost 15 to 20... probation...

We used to go to Sam's when I was older for clothing.

I found all the good military surplus stores were downtown.

Remember Big Ed's? Now there is a place in L.A. touting their OMG Burger. (Saw it on way early national news) 4 pounds of meat, plus tomatoes, onions, cheese and other salad stuff. Their "executive chef" even adds 4 pounds of fries to complete it. Copy cats!!!!! Just like bacon cheese burgers, I don't remember one being on anyone's menu until Hollie's closed. Not to say there weren't some; I just don't remember any

Yeah, my mother had it back in the 50's. I was in Rhode Island one time and ordered a Bacon cheeseburger...Coke....French fries....The waitress looked at me like I was crazy....First of all the served Pepsi only....and what is a Bacon Cheeseburger?. I told her and the cook came from the back to make sure she had the order right....I agreed....they brought me the burger...had a guy with me...he ordered the same and then we both ordered a Banana Split......Great food.....then the bill came .....$64.44...I about passed out......Expensive bacon and Banana Split.....

I don't know if there were any before, but Hollies had the best and none have even come close to coping it.

Another was the triple decker with cheese at the Spot! Do not think anyone has tried to copy it before or since.

Amen to that! My brother and I and our at that time wives were at Hollie's one night after a concert, might have been Neil Young's After The Goldrush appearance at the Myriad, we'd placed our order and were conversing about the concert in our blown to hell state of mind when all of a sudden, whoever had the order taking duty came back on and joined right in the conversation like she'd been part of it all along. Like to have freaked us out

A&W had the teen burger which was a bacon cheese burger way back

They had the Papa, Mama, Teen and Baby burgers. I don't remember the
difference between the Papa and Mama. I think the Mama had mayo and the
Papa had mustard.

How many mugs do you have in your collection? I've got 2 or 3. One is a
baby mug.

Other than that, I wouldn't give you one, anyway, because their mine.

I always liked the Trigger Burger....I mean Double-R Bar burger at Roy Roger's. I don't think I ever ate at Hollie's, we had the A&W at 23rd & Meridian and Bonaparte's on NW 39th. There was also a place called the Jolly Roger at NW 23rd by Ann Arbor, it was a the last thing that I can remember in there was a Monterey Jack's.

I agree with the Double-R-Bar at Roy Rogers.

I also miss the seasoning salt that Arby's had for their roast beef sandwich.

The green sauce at Taco Bell. Don't use the individual packaged they now have.

Does anyone remember the drive-in at 44th and Penn? I think it was Dub's. I always got it mixed up with Don's(Fred Flintstone on sign) which was at 59th and Agnew. They both made a mean Coke float and chilidog(my favorites).

It started out as Potter's and Mr. Potter got tired of the long hours. My mother was the manager there for about three years. Al and Dub were route salesmen that wanted to go into business with the idea of having a chain of them (dreams of McDonald's).....They didn't wanted to work the hours either but, Al (Alan Edwards) opened a place on 44th called Al's Hideaway....I think the building is still there.

i can't remember it east of Penn on 44th and can't remember it west of Penn 44 Lanes

All right Gentlemen:......Get out your pencils.....Potter's (Al .n Dub's) was located about 75 yards EAST of Pennsylvania on the North Side of 44th Street.

WILKERSON'S was located West of Penn 44 bowling Alley on the North Side of the street. There is mexican food restaurant there now...

No, Al's (S.W. 44th and Robinson) had the sign you're talking about it is located (the building) on the South Side of the street between Santa Fe and Robinson. It was called Al's Hideaway. Dub kept the old Potter's/Al 'n Dub's and ran it for a few years.....When he got out of the business it sat idle for a while then I think a Convenience store and then Kirk's pawn and now it is still a pawn shop.....Carltonskeeper....correct me where I'm wrong...please....

When I was about 10 or 11 my Mother was the manager for Potter's for 3-4 years....that WAS the Grant Hangout (right Gen60?) Mr. Potter sold to two of his route salesmen (Alan Edwards and Dub..."whatever"). My Mother stayed with them for a while and then she quit (don't know why)....One of them was a Bread salesman and I think the other was a chip salesman...not sure on that...

Now,a there was a A&W or something like that on 44th East of 44 lanes for some time. It was a group of Drive-Inn restaurant forever. Now, I think it was there on the south side of 44th St. that Griff's was located.....That was after my time in HighSchool.....Prunpicker can pick it up from here....

D&D Country Club Drive-Inn. That was the place for a long time. First date with my wife of 44 years was right there. It's actually (or was) where the new Arby's parking lot is which is West of Kenny Skagg's. During the late 50's and real early 60's the true place was the Western Dip on 51st and Western. And, Potter's was the other place.....Carltonskeeper and USG60 can nail the entire thing down. Potter's or Al 'n Dub's was not as social as the others above mentioned. Was getting too close to Capitol Hill Territory....The kids nowadays think there is a rivalry. Back in the 50's and 60's there WAS a rivalry. The only thing is both schools backed each other if NorthSiders or kids from Southeast gave anyone any trouble....Kinda Neat the way things Used to Happen....

I was being an Old Man last night. My wife does quilting for people as a hobby and she took a quilt to a lady who had lived there for 50 years. The Hispanics have moved in all around her. While waiting for her about three doors down these hispanic guys turned there Chicano music up so loud you couldn't hear anything else........Do, I brought out my Alan Jackson CD's and Kenny Chesney and Cranked up the old stereo....they don't like true Country either.....staring contest began....Alan Jackson has a lot of steel Guitar in it....they got loud, I got louder.....they turned theirs down to a reasonable volume.....I turned mine Off.....the older lady and her husband were still laughing when we left.... Those lakes were popular fishing places at that time. There was
a hot water heater with a hole that we'd put a $1 in to fish. Stella

Hey Prune, her dad is Eddie Peak. He certainly did some jazz and I'd bet 50 cents he at least knew Wayne Nichols even if he didn't play with him. I saw him on occasion backing up some of the lady jazz singers back in the '60s and early '70s. He was a terrific keyboardist and entertainer. But I would like to know if she knows what happened to Altice Moore, and if she knew Dean McDanials died a few years ago.

Altice Moore (III) passed away a few years back. I heard this from his son, also Altice Moore, who is a good friend of mine. I was amazed at what all his father knew how to do.

Jim Kyle

Does Baird Jones or Wayne Nichols ring a bell? Larry Skinner? Norma Jean?
Benny Garcia (the world's greatest guitarist)?Just ran across this very old (2009) post on the thread and have to answer. I first encountered Baird when he was holding down the piano bar at The Store. Wayne took it over a few weeks after I discovered the place. I hung out there as long as Wayne ran it and Wayne taught me a few bits -- including the Ellington intro to A-Train -- but sadly he fell off the wagon again and it killed him.

I particularly enjoyed the nights when others would drop in and jam for a while. Haven't been back to The Store since Wayne left it. Those nights nursing a single draught beer and soaking up Wayne's memories taught me to hear the line and just follow it. I'm nowhere near pro, but still love the scene...

Reading back on the thread I find mention of Nick's Deli on Western, where I first met the muffleta -- and none of them I've tried since come close to being as good as Nick's were.

I hate black olives but I ate quite a few muffletas at Nick's. I would always get the evil eye when I said to hold the olives but it was always excellent and the best in town ever in my opinion. I ate other items there as well, but the muffleta is the only thing I remember by name. Does anybody in town still make them other than Schlotzkie's?

p.s. Evil eye is a little strong, let's just say, a strange look when I told them to hold the olives.

Lady Anne's Oddities surpassed Abextra in any and every measurable way.
Both of them were superior to that creepy, proto-goth,

(That has somehow . . . evolved into something like Anthropologie?)

Of course, all of that was only from an alien/nonokc noob's point of view back then.

I recall Records, Inc. as never being real busy. They sold albums at the MSRP and made them far more expensive than other places. If my recollection serves me, it was an AfroAmerican/Ethnic/whatever hair and beauty supply place after Records, Inc. went out. I bought my records down the street at Wilcox. They had listening booths and it was in a converted house. I still miss it. I bought my first Crawdaddy magazine there and my first issue of Creem. Oh, what memories.

This is true, BUT, and it's a big but, if it was a Top 40 Hit they had it
immediately and in abundance. You didn't have to look anywhere else.
You knew it was there. That was a big deal until the 70's when the
music became pseudo-personal. Something Top 40 wasn't.

Gotta wonder how Records stayed in business, as unbusy as they seemed to be. I really liked the place but bought most of my albums at places like JC Penney, Hydes Drug, Founders Fair or such. The first time I spotted Rubber Soul was at the GEX on S Eastern. What a nobrainer, realizing it would soon come to me as a Christmas present.

Remember the WKY weekly Top 50 Survey, distributed where records were bought? This consisted of the Top 40 plus ten newbies in a category called Pick Hits, or something.

Soul Boutique, I think, was at 23&Classen for a while.

I don't remember Wilcox, but do remember Rainbow Records and later, Peaches.
