Prunepicker 05-10-2009, 05:28 PM I started driving in '58... wrecked in '59... my dad decided I should wait until
about '61 to finish my driving lessons...
Hey! I've driven a '58, '59 and 61 sumpin-or-another. Renaults (pronounced
reeee-nalt) Puegeots (poo-joe).
One day a friend and I were cruising S. Agnew. As we crossed SW 29th a
car load of girls started honkin' and yelling as us, and nothing derogatory!
Immediately we knew that they must have northsiders!
Naturally, I did what any red blooded General boy would do and made an
abrupt U-turn and stomped the gas to catch up with the girls. We hit the
intersection at about 50mph and it felt like we were airborne on the first
dip. My buddy looked behind us and said, "Hey,there's a cop behind us."
He was always kidding about cops being on our tail. A few blocks later I
made a hard left turn with squealing tires and everything. Then I heard
this siren.
"Where is it?", I yelled.
"Right behind us, you %$@&! I told you that a million blocks ago!"
"Since when did you start telling the truth?"
"Today!"
To make a short story longer, the cop did the usual routine. The other
cop in the car was smiling big and acting like he was shooting us with his
finger and ducking behind the dashboard.
When he asked me what kind of car it was I mumbled "poo-joe".
He stuck his head in the car and yelled, "what'd you call me, boy?!"
"It's a Peugeot! Honest occifer! Look on the hood!"
I got one heck of a ticket that day.
chhs kid ''73'' 05-10-2009, 06:21 PM How old are you? Weber's sold out to Coit's in 1953.......Read all of the Southside memories and we did quite a research on this subject!!
Well I don't want'a rain on your parade, Coit might have owned it but it was
still called Webers at least at the time I'm talking about, maybe spring 68.
I took a job there as a carhop lasted, I think 2 evening& one saturday. And at that time there was no indoor tables, they did have a table on the south
end of the building. I think it was more for the employees. The rootbeer you could get in those waxed coated cones that looked like megaphones. And to answer the other part of your question I'm 53 graduated form Capitol Hill High
went to Capitol Hill JR High, and Washington and Shidler grade school. ''kid:bright_id:tiphat:
CarltonsKeeper 05-10-2009, 06:21 PM The sign still said Weber's in '58, and I believe even past '60. I still have the plastic spoon that says Stolen from Weber's Rootbeer Stand and I started driving in '58, so ...........
So... Back last fall Soonergirl checked this out on the Historical Society site and it tells where Coits got their start. They started at 24th and S. Robinson in 1953 from buying out the "The Webers" which were school teachers by trade. It was Coit/Weber's Root Beer until the following year 1954 when the Weber's went their own way. I went by and talked to the Manager where you have your meetings and the assistant manager and confirmed this. Next meeting just ask them the history I just mentioned, they love to discuss it. It was never Weber's after 1954, you can believe it or not, but better yet check it out like I did with the people who run the place. I lived about 10 minutes from Coits! Better yet, have Soonergirl pull up the articles concerning this merger, purchase transition etc. Not worth arguing about. Have a good day!!
Prunepicker 05-10-2009, 06:39 PM Does anyone remember when a local Volkswagen was put into the pool at
Wedgewood? Everyone was supposed to enter how long they thought the
VW would float.
I think it floated for quite a while. 2 days? Or maybe it floated until the next
day?

I think it floated for quite a while. 2 days? Or maybe it floated until the next

I think someone from Southeast stole it the first night when they cut the lights.
Later they decorated it as a homecoming float.
Understand it's buried in the field west of the school.
What the heck is that field for anyway.
There's a "new" field at CHHS! Used to be a parking lot when I went there.
Now the students can't afford cars and their parents won't let them borrow the burros...........
:ou
USG '60 05-11-2009, 08:20 AM Well, I will CERTAINLY face those folks down if they think that their establishment was Coits in '58. It was NOT. We did not move to OKC until '54. If that sign switched in '53 I never would have even SEEN Weber's, much less hung out there in '58 in my '51 Studebaker. They should get their own history straight.

papaOU 05-16-2009, 12:30 AM Weber's was a Tulsa based company wasn't it?
bluedogok 05-16-2009, 08:09 AM As far as I know it is, they still have a location on Peoria (http://www.webersoftulsa.com/).
Shipwreck 05-16-2009, 08:32 PM Ok, this is for all you southsiders in particular. Who can remember these places most were along South Western area.
Sambo's at Grand Blvd and Western
Golden Fork on Grand Blvd
...
Can you tell me more about these two locations and particularly where they were located, etc?

Roya; Fork was about a half block or so west, on the north side od 36h st
Prunepicker 05-26-2009, 12:23 AM There was a Sambo's on N.W. 23rd and Meridian. Just west and on the south
side of the street. There's Chinese restaurant in it's place.

Since we are talking about "Grand" and Western could we designate whether it is South or North Western. I know where you are talking about but others might not. If they are too young they might talk to a relative or older person that knows and might have more information.

There is a difference, unless you're a southsider. Wasn't there a Dairy Boy or
a Dairy Queen on the N.E. corner?
I mean on the real Western and Grand.

N.W. 10Th and West of Broadway. It sits next to the alley. Right?
During the 1960's and '70's it was used for U.S. Grant graduation ceremonies

Right on the address and kinda sorta on the graduation. that was where the Draft inductees were kept before going to Fort Polk, Louisiana which meant Viet Nam to many young Oklahomans....Grant, Southeast, Capitol Hill as well....
USG '60 06-08-2009, 07:48 AM In 1967 I had a welfare client who lived there. It was filthy and rundown at that time.
Generals64 06-09-2009, 03:18 PM Coit's is reserved for june 20th, 2009:.........1:30....... Be there
tornadoosu 06-09-2009, 03:48 PM I actually answered one of your questions in an earlier post. Bob Jenny is dead.
The Tornado was sold and moved to Panama City Fl but had a total design change. That park closed and the cars are being used by Strickers Grove in Ohio.

Springlake also had a Wild Mouse. Someone said Wedgwood had one as well but I did not go there enough to recollect one.
bluedogok 06-14-2009, 11:38 AM I thought Wedgewood was the one with the Wild Mouse, Springlake had the Big/Little Dippers. Maybe the Wild Mouse was moved to Springlake after Wedgewood closed?

You're right about the big/Little Dippers and
Wedgewood had the Wild Mouse...I think it was moved to Frontier City though. Here's one for the Bluedog...do you remember the roller skates that kids used to attach to there regular shoes? I found one of the Skate Keys the other day...brought back great memories except for the time I ruined my school shoes....that was not such a great memory....
bluedogok 06-16-2009, 07:46 PM The metal strap-on type with the metal wheels? I remember them but never had any of them, the only roller skating was elementary/jr. high era (mid-70's) that I did was at the rink on NW 36th near MacArthur, by then they had the neoprene wheels. I can't remember if that was Comet or Rocket. We did go to Ice Chalet by Will Rogers Park in that era to ice skate.

My son and I hold the record for returning Ice skates in Breckenridge, Colorado....10 minutes Flat.....My son was 3 at the time and he fell as soon as he got on the Ice and I tried to get to him and busted my A&% in one swoop and there was a lady who came and helped us get up.....Come to find out she is the lady that stars in All My children....The one that had a hard time receiving an Emmy...I can't remember her name but, she was as pretty in life as on television....She laughed at me but was worried about my son...Couldn't get those things off fast enough.....Walked across the ice in my socks...in the snow in my socks and bought a new pair in the warming hut,,,Whoever invented Ice Skates must be a Sicko....

The wild mouse was next to the little dipper. It was the farthest ride north and west in the park.

I don't think so. Most of the rides were sold separately. The Carousel was sold to a collector I think. There should be gobs of tickets, passes, and crap ( and I bought a lot of it ) that was given as prizes or trinkets in the Arcade.
papaOU 06-17-2009, 10:35 PM Remeber the plastic elephant keys? The trunk was a "key" and when you went to the zoo, placed it in the box in front of the exhibit, gave it a turn and you got a recording concerning the animals.
remember the monkee ship?
grantgeneral78 06-18-2009, 07:43 AM About this time of year when were kids ...FIRECRACKERS were KING, its a shame the kids dont get to have the fun we did in the city limits...POP BOTTLE ROCKETS..were the best!

don't remember the Elephant key but I do remember the Monkey ship...Is it still there?????I remember one time my dad threw a banana to the Monkeys and one of them politely threw something back at him.....Didn't smell good if you get the drift.....
jakins 07-01-2009, 06:41 PM prunepicker,
Regarding Julain Akins - He was my dad. Any memories or stories of him that you are aware of would be great to hear. He passed away in the mid 90's after a few years in the nursing home by Lake Hefner, off 50th and Portland.
Would love to hear anything you know of him.
Thakns,
jakins 07-01-2009, 06:58 PM I can tell you lots about Julian AKins - he was after all my dad. He taught music at 2308 N Douglas, right around the corner from Beverly's. I remember many night listening to the jam sessions with Joe S, Joe Webster, Willie Wells, Anita Bryant, etc. He was Vince Gills guitar teached way back in the day. He passed away in the mid 90's and is buried at Fort Gibson.
Any stories or info you may have would be greatly appreciated.

CCOKC 07-16-2009, 10:47 PM Boy, that picture brought back some memories. Does anyone know when the ship was removed? I was born in 1966 and I remember the ship and the monkeys vividly so I am thinking it was gone late 70's early 80's. (That's a question btw). The new entrance is so much better I think.

erkyl 07-20-2009, 11:02 PM I found this thread last night when doing a Google search for J.B. Nimbles, a favorite spot of mine as a kid growing up in the OKC area. I lived in Bethany until we moved to Edmond in the third grade. I graduated from Edmond Memorial in 78, but my grandparents continued to live in Bethany so I was over there a LOT. It has been fun to remember all the familiar restaurants and parks and names from our past. My husband grew up in Midwest City.
My first official job at 14 was working the games at Frontier City. I learned a lot about how those games were rigged back then. I also worked at Molly Murphy's House of Fine Repute back in the early 80's. Fun times.
Growing up, I remember lots of the places and restaurants mentioned on this thread, such as Der Dutchman, Zuider Zee, Beverly's, Split T, Charcoal Oven, (I worked there, too, at the one in Edmond). But, I also remember the Patio restaurant on the Classen Circle, and the building with the milk bottle on top of it (it's still there), the golden dome bank on 23rd Street. I remember the playground at the Twilight Drive-in Theater. I remember dressing up to like the material girl in the 80's to go to the Dungeon.
My brownie troop also got to be on the Foreman Scotty show, and I won the Lucky Penny (because I switched places in line with a girl who wanted to stand next to a friend of hers). Wish I had kept that thing.
Thanks for all the great links to pictures and the stroll down memory lane growing up in Oklahoma City.

Prunepicker 07-21-2009, 02:13 PM Does anyone know if this is the coleslaw recipe that was served at
Herman's Seafood? The person says it is but I honestly don't remember
tasting green bell pepper (aka deadly hemlock). If this is the real recipe
then the bell pepper must remain.
Herman’s Coleslaw
3 pound head of cabbage, chopped
1 large onion, chopped
1 large green pepper, chopped
1 cup sugar
3/4 cup olive oil
3/4 cup vinegar
2 TB sugar
1 TB salt
1 teaspoon celery seed
1 teaspoon dry mustard
Mix the cabbage, onion and green pepper with the 1 cup sugar. Let it sit
for one full hour. Bring to boil the oil, vinegar, 2 TB sugar, salt, celery seed
and dry mustard. Pour the mixture over cabbage mix and refrigerate for 4
hours or longer before serving. Mix again and serve.
Does this sound right? Anyone know?

Prunepicker 07-21-2009, 11:09 PM Tons of posts but how about the Drexel Drug fountain with the big AAA Root

I remember that place on NW 19th & Drexel. 19th? The building is still there.
CCOKC 07-23-2009, 09:34 PM My grandmother lived 2 blocks away from there just on the south side of the park. We used to walk there to get an ice cream from the fountain. I have to say I don't remember the root beer barrel though. Is it possible it was on a different Drexel's or was this before my time?
Generals64 08-16-2009, 08:29 AM Do anyone of you guys and gals remember in the "Olden days" the name of the Bread company that used to go door to door selling bread....Was it Wonder? Colonial?....I know it wasn't Mrs. Baird's as that was and is a Texas brand....Also, how about the Milkman????was it Bordens?...Gilt Edge?...really I'm trying to find out who the real dad of PapaOU is.....
bluedogok 08-16-2009, 11:51 AM Not sure of bread sales door to door but I know we had Borden's milk delivery until shortly after the first Braum's opened up at 23rd & Meridian.
Mrs. Baird's was a Texas brand, it is now owned my Bimbo Bakeries USA, the US subsidiary of Grupo Bimbo out of Mexico. They have been buying up a bunch of US bakeries and have Arnold (mostly in the Eastern US), Bimbo (Latin America & US), Boboli (pizza products), Brownberry (Midwest US), Entenmann's (pastries), Francisco (US), Freihofer's (US), Marinela (Latin America), Oroweat (Western US), Stroehmann (US), Thomas' (English Muffins/Bagels), Tia Rosa (tortillas & chips), Old Country (California, Nevada and Arizona) and Weber's in their group. I know I always liked driving by the Mrs. Baird's plant on Mockingbird Lane near SMU when I lived in Dallas, the Safeway/Homeland bread plant at 36th & Lincoln always had a nice smell as well.
papaOU 08-16-2009, 02:01 PM The milk company on S. Agnew. Was it Cold Spot or Gold Spot? Remember Ho-Ho being sponsered by the company.
