No billiards. But I did play a lot of snooker at Eddy's Past time on 24th and walker. In fact the sign is still on the building.

Played Billiards more than once but enjoyed 8 ball...Snooker was more fun than any of them.....

I spent two years in college learning Snooker, then I found out I wasn't
getting college credit for it.

I learned to play in one of the seediest Bars in Ardmore, they would let the kids come in and play snooker by a side door. There was an area blocked off and no kids could go pass the railing.....Shouldn't have been in there....

Ths thread is about childhood memories and as I was re reading the entries It came to mind how as a young child in Oklahoma I remember how my Grandparents would save the Newspapers and when they had enough, we would wad the papers up and stuff them between the bare 2x4's in my frandfather's house (S.E Okla.) and use it as insulation. Then, they would save any and all cardboard boexes and that would suffice the use of Sheetrock (couldn't afford sheetrock) and they would tack on the cardboard and keep stuffing the wadded paper and they when the wall was insulated, cardboarded and tight they (my grandparents) would make a flour and water paste and take
the rest of the newspaper and wallpaper the walls. Once dried, they would simply varnish over the paper and then VOILA!!!! they would have insulated walls to keep the cold Oklahoma winds out....Those people knew how to survive comfortably. My Grandfather always save the new "Funny Papers' for their bedroom.....He said he wanted his room cheerful and bright....

Good read. Both my Dad's parents grew up dirt poor. Grandma had 13 brothers and sister. They lived on 160acres in Lincoln County, OK. There were times when the kids had to work the farm and their Dad, my Great-Great Granddad when from town to town looking for work that paid cash money.
Grandmothers sister and her husband bought the farm later and lived on it for nearly fifty years. Aunt Margaret would stay on the place sometimes for 6 months or more never seeing anyone but visitors to the place.
Fresh baked bread, real butter and homemade strawberry preserves...........
When I hear people say now days that things are bad and gonna get worse, I laugh.......... :053:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ````
I don't especially want to go back to that life style but, I know I could survive but, It makes we wonder how the younger people who have never seen anything like that would make it in those hard times...you know, wht would they do without their Laptop and their Moca Latte Grande with a Danish and so on. What if they had to put cardboard in their shoes for another month's wearing. Oh Yeah how are they going to pay for $400.00 seats at the local rock concert.....My Great/Great Aunt still did the
same insulation trick until she died in the early nineties.....Every six months they would re paper the house.....I remember my mom taking her some Real Wallpaper and my Aunt didn't know what to do....She used to sweep the floor spotless...oh yeah did I tell you it was a dirt floor????? My dad and my uncles went in and floored the place for her when she was around 89 years old....she never did unerstand why they did that???the money could have been put back in case of an emergency. The dirt was plain good enough for her. My grandad was hauling oranges for a while (cross county) and every time he came back he would put as many wooden orange crate on top of the load as he could get. Then when he got home he would dump them off the trailer and make the delivery and while he was gone my uncle,sister and aunt and I would stack them like bricks and eventually he had the walls for a shed and chicken coup....They made do with what they had a hand....Frsh bread and Butter was great ....never did like the fresh milk that's how I acquired a taste for Coffee at the ripe old age of 5......But, welcome to my world....I still remember the Out house......Didn't like the Sears Catalogue...too slick....
My childhood (early years) were not bad years compared to the times. My parents worked till dark every night. I remember sleeping outside on a Box Spring hung from trees....No one knew what an air conditioner was...I can remember getting....Notice I said getting to.....listen to the Grand Old Opry on a battery operated Radio on Saturday night....I didn't know we were not well off..we weren't poor in as much as we had each other....I went to the first grade in Dickson, Oklahoma...everyone has been there correct???? I used to hate to go and gather the eggs....I was the baby so I cried a lot and it was
easier for my mom to just go and get the eggs......For you that have never taken a Fresh well shower.....you don't know what you have missed....Cold well water pour into a #3 Wash Tub with holes in it (rusted holes) and coming over your head.....Wow, that was fun. I remember when we moved to OKC (1952)
I was excited more about electric lights in EVERY room than I was in getting to keep going to school. My dad drove a truck (cross country) and in those days they didn't have the refrigerated units that they have now. They would stop at intervals and re-ice the fresh fruit...Spray hundres of pounds of ground up ice on the goods.....My dad would come home on Friday nights and before going to deliver the goods he would stop and pack the Water cooler (in my room ) and it would be freezing cold in there for the week-end....you know, a Swamp cooler....Gosh, I can just keep going on the escapades of a back woods Southern Boy.....Ever go Snipe Hunting? How about Coon hunting????my grand father would sell the carcasses as well as the hides....one night we were taking some (plural) raccoon carcasses to a couple and they were just sitting down to eat the ones he had brought two days before...We were invited to join them (Oh NO) my Grandfather said it would be rude not to eat supper...Plus he would wear me out if I didn't....We sat down, I got my serving of Raccoon took my one and only bite and swallowed...It was like swallowing an elephant foot. You know, the more you chewed the larger the bite got....Now, imagine this taking big spoon full of
Crisco Cooking grease and putting in in your mouth...YUK!!!....It gets worse but I'll stop there....remember, I began to drink Coffee at the age of 5.....Coffee cuts the grease pretty quick.... I'll stop for a while....
what was the name of the big hubcap place on Robinson south of the train
bridge...was it henneseys? it has been driving me insane!
It was Buddy Hennesey's. He had two places across the street from each
other. I used to buy first rate used retreads for $10 from Buddy. If you
were a good customer, he'd take you to his private stock of tires that at one
time had tread on them. 2/$15!
Had to go downtown and decided to come back via Robinson to check Hennessey's for the true title. All read "Johnny Hennessey's". Now all of those are on the west side of Robinson and could not find any signs still left on the east side.
Remember the midget that worked for the muffler and tailpipe company further south and on the east side of Robinson? My Dad once said the guy was suing the city for building the sidewalks too close to his ass!!
There is a diner that sounds very much like that near the Union Bus Depot called "The Lunch Box," which was run for years by a Greek family here in OKC; it closed when the owner retired, but reopened under the same name by someone who presumably had worked their as a cook. Dunno if its the same place, but my understanding is the new owner tried to retain the old recipes, etc.
It is still a great place to eat and has maintained the "regulars" for years. In fact the "regulars" have their own reserved tables. Great Ruben and homemade pies and cobbler.
Grrrrrrrr
It was Hennessey's. However, some of us are debating whether or not it was
Buddy or Johnny.
Here are my theories:
1. Buddy originally owned it and sold it to a relative named Johnny.
2. Johnny killed Buddy during a card game and took over the business.
3. Somebody named the place as a cover to fence stolen tires.
4. Neither existed and it was owned by Alan Merrill who sold tires to the
Mexican market.
5. It's too late and I need to go to sleep.
6. Soonergirl26 is really Shelley Fabres. Has anyone seen "Ride the Wild
Surf"? I believe Shelley Fabres is really Soonergirl!
7. Why isn't she called spartangirl68?
8. It really is late!
9. My theories don't hold water...
10. Prunette is hollerin' at me to close the laptop and go to bed.
11. If I don't stop then Darlin' Darla is going to get on this thread and I'm
toast.
12. OY!
13. That's Yiddish for OY!
14. I'm not Yiddish. Why am I speaking Yiddish?
15. Generals64 is someone else.
