Skirvin ready for furniture delivery by Kelley Chambers
The Journal Record
2/5/2007 OKLAHOMA CITY – The Skirvin Hilton Hotel began looking more like the restored hotel it is on Friday evening when crews began delivering the first round of furniture and appointments to two floors of guest rooms.
Nearly every piece of furniture that will define the Skirvin’s look began arriving in October and has been stored at Armstrong Logistics in southwest Oklahoma City.
Now, less than a month before the hotel is set to reopen, crews from Armstrong will begin making night and weekend deliveries so they do not have to share elevators with the construction crews working during the day.
Tom Connell, vice president of Armstrong, said all of the furnishings should be installed by the week of Feb. 19. The hotel is set to open Feb. 26.
“The whole week of the 19th you’ll see a transformation from a construction site to a hotel,” Connell said.
In Armstrong’s 47,000-square-foot warehouse, the Skirvin items have been occupying about 37,000 square feet of the space.
The weekend plan called for Armstrong to move furniture into the hotel for the 10th and 11th floor guestrooms and to be done by Sunday evening. Connell said 20 to 30 crew members will be working on the Skirvin project at any given time.
The Skirvin also announced Friday a gift shop operator for the hotel had been selected.
Avis Scaramucci, owner of the Painted Door gift shop in Bricktown, said the shop in the Skirvin will also be called Painted Door and will open the same day as the hotel.
She will feature boutique-style items as well as some specific Skirvin and Oklahoma items.
Doug Loudenback 02-11-2007, 03:46 PM Very very nice article by Steve Lackmeyer in today's Sunday Okahoman on Dan James & his family vis a vis the Skirvin ... Lackmeyer's Article (http://www.newsok.com/article/3011515/?template=business/main)
Here's a video just posted on newsok.com that shows some of the pre-opening prep:

And there's also a podcast by Steve Lackmeyer (mentions a special paper section on Sunday):

Any word on a grand-opening celebration or ceremony open to the public?

BG918 02-23-2007, 12:35 AM I'm glad this will be open in time for the Big 12 tournament, I thought it would be delayed. Those coming to the tourney and staying at the Skirvin will be very impressed indeed, also the visitors at the Colcord. Now all downtown needs is more of a boutique hotel, like the one once planned for the canal on Mickey Mantle, and a large upscale highrise hotel like Grand Hyatt or Westin right by the Ford Center overlooking the Myriad Gardens!
Now all downtown needs is more of a boutique hotel...
You don't get more boutique than the Colcord.
Doug Loudenback 02-23-2007, 05:43 AM Dan Mahoney, Public Relations Consultant for the Skirvin Hilton (Dan works with the Gooden Group public relations firm) has put together a marvelous collection of links and images from vintage to current times, including images of the Skirvin that most of us (me included) have never seen before! It's great stuff ... and, to answer your question, YALC, yes, the Monday opening is open to the public! BE THERE!

Thanks to Dan Mahoney, I got a 2nd opportunity to have a look inside the Skirvin Hilton - not an extensive tour like the one last month, but great just the same. PLUS, Doug Dawg was interviewed by Channel 9's Doug Warner – look for me on Monday morning at or after 7:00 a.m.! Cooool!
Here are the new pics ... larger (1024 x 768) pics are in my updated blog post, Doug Dawgz Blog: Skirvin Hilton Preview (http://dougdawg.blogspot.com/2007/01/skirvin-hilton-preview.html) .

Be there, on Monday, February 26, at NOON for the Grand Opening!
jbrown84 02-23-2007, 03:24 PM How long does the Grand Opening last?
Doug Loudenback 02-23-2007, 03:55 PM Sorry, I didn't ask and don't know.
jbrown84 02-23-2007, 04:13 PM Seems weird to have it at noon. Don't most people work on Mondays??
Seems weird to have it at noon. Don't most people work on Mondays??
I'm sure it's at noon, so anybody who wants to make it on their lunch break, can.
Noon is a lot better for most people than, say, 6:00 AM.
jbrown84 02-24-2007, 12:59 AM True, but I hope it goes into the evening for people who don't work in the CBD.
True, but I hope it goes into the evening for people who don't work in the CBD.
I'm sure it will be a zoo from Monday, onward. Between people going to check it out and the start of the Big XII tourney (the Skirvin is the host hotel), it will probably be the place to see and be seen, as it was when it was open.
jbrown84 02-24-2007, 10:01 PM Well is this not a special open house?
Here's a link to the Oklahoman's special section on the Skirvin:

floater 02-25-2007, 11:03 AM It is open to the public. Between the public sneaking a look, to bar and restaurant patrons and those actually doing business and staying there, it will be a zoo tomorrow. No matter when the event ends, people will be checking it out into the later hours. I hope there will be tours.
IMO it's going to be one of those days Oklahoma Citians won't forget. It's great seeing people have such affection for a building. Sometimes I think there's not much pride or connection from locals towards this city, but this has proven me way wrong.
Oh man, I remember sneaking in there around 1989 with some friends from a photography class to take some pictures. Wish I still had them, that place had a cool look that you don't find in most modern hotels. Sure hope they got the musty smell out of there though, I remember my allergies went nuts in there after a few minutes.
Doug Loudenback 02-25-2007, 11:53 AM Floater, I can't see how any of us who live her wouldn't have such pride ... had it not been for Mayor Humphrey's leadership (which got the city pro-actively involved with this project), I doubt very much that we'd be seeing tomorrow's happenings occur. It just makes me proud, very very proud, of my town!
I've posted a new blog article this morning, Doug Dawgz Blog: Skirvin Hilton - The Day Before (http://dougdawg.blogspot.com/2007/02/skirvin-hilton-day-before.html) which includes several of the pics in today's Oklahoman as well as the many other pics in Dan Mahoney's website ... some of which I'll show below ... larger versions of the images are in my blog article by clicking on them ... Mahoney's collection gives some views of the Skirvin that I've certainly not seen before, particularly of some of its guests!

floater 02-25-2007, 12:13 PM Haha, I like that distinction of the color photos of the present from the black-and-whites of the past. She looks glorious lit up at night.
BG918 02-25-2007, 07:40 PM Awesome to see such an historic hotel brought back to life. This looks like it will be the premier hotel in Oklahoma City for some time! It's cool to stay in a hotel where famous people from the past once stayed. I just hope the same thing can someday happen to the Mayo in Tulsa.
Really wish I could be there for the grand re-opening!
Like many, I have tons of great memories of the Skirvin, such as high school prom, a fraternity Christmas dance, and lots of nice lunches listening to the piano as a fresh-out-of-college young businessman.
But in addition to the individual memories, the Skirvin is symbolic of so many things in OKC, most specifically the rebirth of the city and it's burgeoning cosmopolitan image.
Tomorrow will truly be a great day for OKC!
jbrown84 02-26-2007, 11:20 AM I'm going down there tonight after work. Taking my camera.
I was just a little disappointed - the ceremonies today were definitely intended for the dignitaries and guests, and not for the public. I did go in and see the lobby, but since the place was pretty crowded and I was not invited to the luncheon upstairs, I didn't stay long. I'd never been in the botel before, but I almost felt as if I had because I've looked at so many old postcards of the lobby. I don't agree with all of the design choices that were made (fabrics, lights, etc), but I do agree that they did a first-rate job on everything.
-Clay
I guess I was hoping for more of an open house or tour.

Easy180 02-26-2007, 01:30 PM Wife and her girlfriends booked a suite there for mid-March for her 30th b-day...Not as pricey as I was dreading...Of course she could be lying to me about the price since I didn't book it :numchucks
I was a little surprised it wasn't better attended, too. I'd say there were roughly 200 "dignitaries" and maybe 75 regular people.
-Clay
Patrick 02-26-2007, 05:23 PM It's sure nice to see the lights turned on again, and all of the windows lit up.
Patrick 02-26-2007, 05:27 PM Rates are $279 for a 1 King or 2 Double Beds.. The King Suite is $404.

Well, as I said before I don't think many people could make it down there at lunch. When I was there around 6-7 pm the place was PACKED.

Thanks for those!
Looks very, very nice.
Question: Is the Red Piano Lounge to the left as you enter, and the Park Avenue Gril to the right? And I assume there is a bar in the piano lounge as well?
jbrown84 02-27-2007, 10:07 AM Correct on all counts. The lounge is fairly small, just the bar and some seating. And there actually is a red grand piano.

This is a test to see if this image will post.
jbrown84 02-27-2007, 10:18 AM it didn't
Martin 02-27-2007, 10:30 AM wow... that is beautiful. i'm going to sound critical, though... i'm a bit disappointed at the choice of floor tile. compared to the scale of the rest of the decor, the tiles appear too small. -M
ksearls 02-27-2007, 10:36 AM That is the original tile!
Martin 02-27-2007, 10:38 AM i thought that may be the case. from the pictures, at least, it just doesn't seem to do the rest of the architecture justice, though. i'm not complaining... just a picky observation. -M
bombermwc 02-27-2007, 11:09 AM Absolutely Beautiful. Nothing else like it in town.
TAKE THAT, Waterford!
Haha, just kidding.
Looks great. This really is a huge deal for the city. We now have a place worthy of any visitor to our community.
I also think it's a great lesson in preservation and revilization. When I moved back to Oklahoma City, I don't think I knew anyone that believe it could be done or reopened, despite that fact that such restorations were going on all over the country. It's nice to see Oklahoma City get to the point where it's needs justified bringing this landmark back to life. I don't think there is any better testament as to OKC's health as this reopening.
Here's what I took:

I almost felt as if I'd been inside before (I hadn't; I'm only 28 and the hotel has been closed most of my life) because it looked just like the old postcards of the lobby. I had imagined it would be a larger space, though.

BailJumper 02-27-2007, 02:20 PM All I can say is WOW! I just got back from a guided tour by John Williams GM and the photos, while great, do not do it justice.
I must admit I was one of those, "Just tear it down already and start over" people for years. But they truly have created something unique to downtown.
The regular rooms, while tiny are decorated very nicely and start around $200.
The ballroom is unbelievable and I hope to be invited to a function there soon. The detailing in the wood carving is something you don't see anymore. Williams said a couple came in from Lithuania to do the restoration of the carvings.
My reservation is in!
jbrown84 02-27-2007, 02:36 PM Good shots of the ceremonies. That was a good idea to have the girls in period dress.
When I was there, there was a guy walking around on stilts in an all-orange suit. I have some pics of it.
jbrown84 02-27-2007, 02:38 PM BailJumper, how did you land a guided tour?
BailJumper 02-27-2007, 04:39 PM Mr. Williams is a nice man and is glad to show off the Skirvin when his time allows.
fsusurfer 02-27-2007, 11:43 PM Any signs of effie yet?
Doug Loudenback 02-28-2007, 05:35 AM This post is essentially a redo of my Grand Reopening blog post at Doug Dawgz Blog: Skirvin Hilton Grand Reopening (http://dougdawg.blogspot.com/2007/02/skirvin-hilton-grand-reopening.html) , except that larger images (mostly 1024 x 768) are not available here.
Monday, February 26, 2007, at Noon, is the day and time itself that downtown became itself, again! This post is largely eye candy and lots of it! The Oklahoman's Steve Lackmeyer's articles tell the story much more completely than this post does – see A Grand Reopening of the Skirvin (http://www.newsok.com/article/3018944/) and City, Investors, Chain Write Happy Ending For Landmark Hotel (http://www.newsok.com/article/3018853/).

At about 11:45 a.m., as I walked south on Broadway approaching Park Avenue, this "window" caught my eye ... this is Avis Scaramucci's "Painted Door" gift shop which faces on Broadway. Some "inside" pics of the store are toward the end of this post

Of course, Steve Lackmeyer was there to record it all for posterity. In his regular columns in The Oklahoman and by the great book which he co-authored, OKC: 2nd Time Around (http://dougdawg.blogspot.com/2006/11/okc-2nd-time-around.html), Steve is a great contributor to Oklahoma City history himself. Bill Otto, President of Marcus Hotels and Resorts, a partner and operator of the Skirvin Hilton, extolled his enthusiasm for this project, as did Steve Marcus, Chairman of the Marcus Corporation.
One of Steve Lackmeyer's articles says, "Marcus thinks the only challenge left for Oklahoma City is to 'tell its story'. 'You've got a great story to tell,' Marcus said. 'It's a story about the city's attitude toward development of its downtown, central city, and the things that you're doing. The spirt of the people here is just fabulous.'" Bill Otto is shown below.
