What about at midnight thru 5am? They should just shut it off after a certain hour. Save them the electricity, allow visitors to sleep, and allow the street to be quiet.

Put it on dim from 10p-midnight, OFF from midnight to 5am, and dim from 5am to sunrise.

Of course I agree with this 100%

The entire Oklahoman is unprofessional. When I was in middle school we took a field trip there. We were in the printing area and I asked the tour guide how many newspapers could be printed from one of the large rolls. She laughed at me and repeated the question back to me in a mocking tone. A few minutes later, I heard her mocking me again but she didn't realize that I had heard. I thought it was very unprofessional especially for newspaper employees treating middle school children that way. Ever since then I have not had a very high opinion of the Oklahoman.

Sarcasm.

Lots of people stand at watch that video board and the news stories

I am downtown every weeknight until at least 8PM and much later on the weekends and I see lots of people watching it as well. As for the sound, I have never found it be so loud as to be a disturbance. Then again, I am not sleeping next to it either.

It's probably one of those things that don't bother you at all until you notice it while trying to do something else. My downstairs neighbor at my apartment watches a lot of guitar lessons on YouTube. I don't hear it and it doesn't bother me until I am trying to sleep. After shutting my eyes for a few minutes I can hear it very faintly. Once my brain picks up on it, it seems to get louder and louder.

Until I go to my fridge and pour a tall Gin and Tonic, and then it no longer bothers me. :D

Trust me I know. I live in hotels a lot and I have to run the fan all night just to create the constant background noise that drowns out random noises. I would have no problem turning the sound off after 10PM and maybe switching to closed-caption if they are leaving it on all night. Of course, it isn't like the Colcord itself doesn't generate a lot of light and right next door Devon Tower is making it's presence known for a 30 mile radius.

Just a little update on the video board, I was downtown Saturday night till 1 or so and made it a point to drive back by it. The board was definitely dimmer and the sound was off so I'm glad they have made some changes but even with the board dim I could see it reflecting off the Colcord glass which I would assume will still bother some. I have a friend that works at Flint( she says they are really trying to work on service but that's for another board) but Ill ask her and see if they hotel stayers are still complaining about it. I think its a great downtown item and hopefully as they own it longer they will put it to better use.

It's ironic that the Oklahoman building is just as annoying as their auto-play videos on their website!

This post should be getting more love.

I can barely visit their website anymore without it completely freezing my browser.

Auto-play videos, pop-up ads, wall-to-wall advertising and click bait. It seems to be getting worse by the day.

Yeah, what's the deal with the click bait? I don't think that a news site should have click bait on their site. Ads, I understand, but click bait, no.

They're almost all doing it. I just today hid posts by one of the local TV stations in Facebook (I wish I could just hide Facebook), because every post from them in my feed is click bait. Traditional media is having an incredibly difficult time adapting its business model to the world of new media.

Making themselves increasingly irrelevant by posting tons of pseudo news is not going to work. They should stop firing reporters / writers and start publishing more interesting, substantive, relevant content. They're doing it wrong.

They could start by focusing on what they (should be) selling: news. I can't imagine why no news organization except OKC Talk (and I'm not sure that Pete likes me calling OKC Talk that) can investigate anything. I'd happily read the news or faithfully watch the news if they had real coverage of what's going on and acted like an investigatory body. About the only time you see anything new on the TV news, you just KNOW they read it here first before anyone at the station had a neuron fire of on the idea that it merited looking into. I'd love it if any of the news organizations really looked into the convention center, the boulevard, the park, Project (1)80 -- instead, it seems like they're collecting crickets.

You can slam The Oklahoman all you want but we as consumers bear some of the responsibility. Subscriptions dried up and they have to depend on ad revenue to stay open as a business. Now it's stuck in a chicken and egg situation. People would probably subscribe if it was substantive good in depth news, but the Oklahoman can't make that leap without financial stress, and people won't subscribe until then.

Also Buzzfeed makes a ton of money so going blog style isn't a horrible idea.

Newsok is good for 3 things.
Development news. Steve does a really good job. Pete here does a good job too. They don't have to be mutually exclusive.
Sports. They absolutely nail sports coverage. Tramel is awesome. 90% of what he writes is spot on.
Local Government/Legislature. This is their weakest of the 3 but it's still pretty good. Although I'd love a dedicated tab to it on the website.

The last few times I've been at 6:00 pmish, there have been 4-5 people. The entrance to the gym is in the middle of the building and although you can see in from the street, people may still not know that it is open. All the equipment is brand new and is in my opinion a much better (and bigger) setup than downtown. They are still getting some equipment in, cable attachments, fixed weight barbells, etc. The only negative for me is they don't have a sauna or steam room.

These are from a few days ago.

When you enter to access the Y from either the north or south entrance, you pass through a long, completely white and barren corridor that contains the back doors to OPUBCO, Mahogany and Revolve; opposite are solid windowless walls with the YMCA space on the other side. The glassed in lobby is in the middle.

Frankly, it's pretty terrible and depressing. The picture of the corridor is looking south (the door was open to the back of Mahogany as they are doing construction), but it looks the same in the other direction.

Artwork would help, but not much.

I'd love to join the Y since there are locations close to where I'm working and where I'll be living. However, I wasn't impressed with the pool when I tried it out, and even though I don't swim all the time, I like to have the option. The hours are the deal breaker though. I like to work out late.

Steve:
Someone recently informed me of complaints made about the interior corridor of Century Center looking bland. Well yeah, it's not done yet. One of the owners, Steve Hurst, informed me plants, an art gallery for the long walls and other improvements are still yet to come. Just take a deep breath, maybe ask what's up, and be patient while the job is being completed. Then decide if you like it or not.

Yes they do. At first it was very small and the same color as the building so it was hard to even see. About a month ago they replaced with a larger sign in black letters. It looks pretty good. I'll post a picture at lunch.

That looks a bit like "Garamond" but I've not done an exact-match lookup...

Traditionally, OPUBCO tended to stick with Bodoni Bold for most of their headlines, although they also used a sanserif, the name of which I never learned...
