Great weekend coming up to start the month. My neighbors (new to the start) are already getting planting started. Do I tell them we usually have multiple false springs? ;)

There are certain veggies you can start planting in the middle of February but too early for a lot of flowers. Not too early to start amending the soil though.

The storm track will stay far to our north over the next week allowing near-record warmth across the state. Temps in the 70’s and maybe a few 80’s all next week with nighttime lows well above freezing. I don’t see a temp. below freezing for at least the next 10 days.

Active pattern sets back up around 2/11-12 with multiple storm systems impacting the southern Plains. Looks like all rain/storms in OK but there will be some cold air with snow, likely further north into KS/NE. Hopefully we can pick up some decent rainfall since many areas are starting the year in a deficit.

Yea it’s definitely too early in the season for a lot of the more exotic Azaleas imo

Why can't I edit my own post...? :) Anyway, I meant to write "new to the STATE."

Beautiful start to the week. Middle of the month trending colder - some relatively ominous language about cold coming from a few meteorologists... I haven't had time to really look at models myself.

Beautiful start to the week. Middle of the month trending colder - some relatively ominous language about cold coming from a few meteorologists... I haven't had time to really look at models myself.

Some models were overplaying Arctic air and associated moisture mid-next week creating 20"+ snowfall totals. Anyone that follows winter weather models knows not to put much stock in models a week or more out. Yes, there will be Arctic air. Yes, there will be a storm system moving through the southern Plains. Yes, there will be a dry slot that could completely skunk the OKC metro. We won't know if that means rain, ice or snow until this next weekend.

It certainly seems to me like temperatures will need to be adjusted way downwards for both tomorrow and Wednesday. Friday/Saturday are more uncertain but I wouldn’t be surprised if this cold airmass proves very difficult to dislodge once it moves in early this evening.

^Good call, high temp was at midnight.

Whiplash week continues as south winds return overnight tonight and we make a run at 70F for Wednesday if the sun can stay out. Living life on the edge of spring/winter.

Best case for Saturday, it’ll be warm temperatures but very gusty north winds a la December 30th, 2024. But as I alluded to in my last post, I’ll believe we can dislodge this airmass when I actually see skyrocketing temps like what happened in the Panhandle today.

Even if we do manage a brief warm-up, the next strong cold front will push through on Saturday Afternoon and usher in another extended period of below normal temperatures.

Are you new to Oklahoma?

Does moving here ten years ago count as new?

Then yes!

Which brings me to another question. How long does one have to be here to be considered an Oklahoman or am I forever branded as a northerner?

I think it's more that several rounds of "false spring" followed by bitter cold are a regular pattern year over year in this state. Comments like the one you made can be misinterpreted as coming from someone who is new and doesn't know the usual weather pattern flow here.

But that said, 10 years is definitely long enough to be considered an Okie in my book. Hell, I consider anyone an Okie once they're moved in, settled, and familiar with their surroundings.

Might as well count as new since you can't remember the unforgettable Christmas Eve Blizzard of 2009 or the unbelievably hot summer of 2011. Oldtimers had never felt anything like it as the daily 100s stretched on into September.

You’ve got to just learn to take advantage of the good weather days when they happen here. I’d argue we get nearly as many as most other places across the country, they just happen on a very irregular basis. The biggest downside here is the wind, but it’s at least noticeably better in OKC proper compared to even 25 miles to the west where there are far fewer trees and structures to tame things. Western OK on the rare occasions where the wind isn’t blowing can be absolutely spectacular, though.

Yea that chart is missing the Spring that is plagued by wind for sure.

I think it was in the prairie surf thread or something, but I posted some data showing comfortability charts against other cities and OKC is one of the worst in the country and a huge contributor to that is the wind here.

Wednesday is looking to be the most likely day for impactful winter weather next week, though I’m not going to write off Monday and Tuesday until this pattern stops being way colder and cloudier than initially forecast (I think things will finally level out in that regard by tomorrow or Sunday, but I do actually want to see it lol)

My money is on the EURO which is all rain Monday into Tuesday with snow on Wednesday as the Arctic air settles in. There will be a narrow band of ice that sets up somewhere with the second storm - any travel issues will be in that area.

Right now rain but it will change every 3 hours. Wednesday Thunder game will get cancelled at this point ice storm coming.

I saw last night on X(Twitter) that there was unusually dense fog in Oklahoma City, like never before. Was that really the case? Because I remember when I lived in Oklahoma City, there were several times where there were some nights with pretty dense fog. But I think it was Damon Lane or whatever his name is who was saying that flights were being diverted because of how thick the fog was.

Depends on the track of the low, OKC could very easily end up in the dry slot with very little/no precip.

With temps across the metro flirting with the freezing mark, I'm sure they're there as a precaution today. I'll never complain about the DOT being proactive.

With the freezing/frozen precipitation expected around 5:00-7:00, I’m sure pretreatment of bridges, etc. is taking place today.

Tonight/Early Wed is going to be close for OKC. Likely going to be right around 30-32F. Bridges will be the main issue, but if it dips lower than 30 - expect more widespread travel issues. Precipitation looks pretty light for C OK, but we all know it doesn't take much to cause accidents.

Spring will feel like a distant memory next week. Another Arctic front comes through Saturday with a chance of rain mostly E of I-35 then a stronger system arrives next Tuesday 2/18. That combined with another Arctic front will bring winter weather possibly heavy snow in some areas. The air behind the front could be the coldest all season. Luckily since it is late Feb we should warm up again fairly quickly by the following weekend.
