View Full Version : January 2025 - General Weather Discussion
BoulderSooner 01-09-2025, 02:24 PM Usually when we snow it has been above freezing, sometimes significantly slow, not many days before it comes down. The snow melts on grassy areas pretty quick in those instances but it's not letting up really at all. I think it's also causing some spots on less traveled roads to freeze a bit quicker.
Main roads may not be too awful throughout this storm, but I would think tomorrow morning might have a lot of black ice since the temps are right around freezing.
side and neighborhood roads are going to be terrible tomorrow
Anonymous. 01-09-2025, 03:43 PM The last burst of energy from this storm is beginning now. You can see the plume of snow developing down toward Wichita Falls area. This will advance northward and eventually be shoved by overall low movement to the east.

The drop of the temp in Stillwater from 31 to 30 and more snowfall resulted in turning the streets from just wet to snowy or slushy. Winter storm warning has advanced to there.

C_M_25 01-09-2025, 05:49 PM Feel like the models did a good job with this system. Wonderful snow.
Bunty 01-09-2025, 06:19 PM Emily on KFOR said 3.1" of snow at Will Rogers broke an all-time record for Jan. 9. Former record was 2" in 1977.
sooner333 01-09-2025, 06:39 PM About 5 inches in Norman and still falling.

The RGEM was dead on for OKC.
C_M_25 01-10-2025, 11:21 AM Looks like the GFS is hinting at some snow in the area around the 19th/20th. Signal doesn't appear super strong at the moment. That looks to be followed up on the 23rd with another system pushing through which doesn't look super great for precipitation chances at the moment. Still worth keeping an eye on. Otherwise, the rest of the month looks quiet.
On another note, this snow was absolutely perfect. Super fluffy and great for building snowmen. Not super windy. Not super cold. It was quite pleasant and set up some beautiful scenery. Love it when it snows like this!
Edit: Wanted to add that the temperatures look to drop substantially around that system coming in on the 19th. Going to be some really cold air coming in.
^
Also, it was warm enough that not much snow stuck to the roads for very long and already today it's almost all gone.
We certainly needed the precip.
Anonymous. 01-13-2025, 11:15 AM Warming trend this week ahead of the next system.
This coming weekend will be dramatically colder after a strong cold front comes in putting highs from the 60s to near and below freezing for Saturday/Sunday and into the beginning of the next week. Some forecast models are indicating extreme cold temperatures for long duration (think not getting above 15F for 3-4 days).
Not seeing any decent precipitation chances at this time.
C_M_25 01-15-2025, 04:30 PM Oh man! Just checked the latest complete GFS. It’s hinting at an absolute unit of a snow storm. It’s a narrow system and kinda funny looking so I fully expect our next run or two to change it, but it definitely caught my eye.

I think the models are overplaying the extreme cold, at least for our area. It will be cold, yes, but not unlike anything we have seen before and not colder during this same time last year. Tulsa last Jan 15 had a high of 6 and low of -2!
Anonymous. 01-16-2025, 10:55 AM Models are still a mixed bag of how deep the cold air will travel. Over the last few days, there has been some retreating of the forecast - which is bringing potential precipitation into play for the area.
Anonymous. 01-17-2025, 11:28 AM Enjoy this mild Friday, everything changes tonight. May see a few fast-passing weak showers this afternoon that are coming up from the SW. Nothing significant.
Cold N winds all day Saturday and Sunday. Morning lows will be in the teens with windchills in single-digits.
May see some snow showers Monday, but at this time does not look significant for C OK. Looks like a mainly TX event again.
BG918 01-18-2025, 11:17 AM Luckily this is just a glancing blow of Arctic air and the deep freeze stays to the East. With sunny weather even the low wind chills the next few days won’t be too bad. We might have one more cold snap after this then springtime weather/storm season will be here before we know it.

I hope so. But it seems most of the record worst cold spells have happened in Feb.
Anonymous. 01-20-2025, 10:08 AM Should see some light snow bands develop across NW OK and sink to the SE this afternoon into this evening. No impacts expected except for maybe some temporary visibility issues with any moderate pockets.
The main show for this storm is going to be from Houston to New Orleans where they are expecting 4"+ of snow along the Gulf Coast. A very rare event that will surely produce some cool scenes of beaches covered in snow.
Bunty 01-21-2025, 04:34 PM Wow, it got colder in Oklahoma than expected last night clear down to -17 in the panhandle. At my place it got to 1.6. At the rural Stillwater Mesonet it was 0. If I'm right, the official weather location for Stillwater is at the airport where it was a record breaking -2. Forecast low for Stillwater was 4.
It was as low -2 in Oklahoma County, according to Mesonet. For relief, it may get back to the low 50s on Friday.

I had one cold water pipe freeze up this morning that runs along an outside wall. But it thawed pretty quick on it's own. It is PEX so nothing burst. I think it got down to 5 where I am.
C_M_25 01-22-2025, 11:19 AM We had the same thing happen. Wasn’t expecting that cold of temps. A couple of our faucets lost water. Got them back with a space heater though. Seems like all is well.
BG918 01-23-2025, 10:56 AM Pattern change starts tomorrow with warmer temps and chances of rain next week starting Wednesday 1/29 through Friday 1/31. Watching the first week of February for another Arctic outbreak but nothing like what we just experienced and should moderate quickly.

You mean there won't be another "Siberian Surge" like we had this past week? That one gave me a laugh. I think I only saw News 9 use that phrase but I may have missed it elsewhere. In other news, It's Winter and it gets cold.
Looking forward to spring!
Anonymous. 01-23-2025, 11:28 AM Looking long-range, models are forecasting a classic southern plains winter storm around the last weekend of January. Will have to monitor that one.
BG918 01-26-2025, 08:58 AM The storm system Thursday into Friday is looking more impressive. Rain totals of 2-3” will be possible across most of the state with the highest totals in SE OK.
C_M_25 01-27-2025, 08:44 AM Expected rain totals keep dropping for central Oklahoma.
bison34 01-27-2025, 08:55 AM Expected rain totals keep dropping for central Oklahoma.
As usual. You can set your watch by OKC missing out on rain.

Hey, i like rain. I know we need it.
LakeEffect 01-27-2025, 09:25 AM Really depends on what model you prefer this far out... GFS has gone lesser for west of I-35... NAM is still higher for OKC, moves the line to US-81, roughly. SE OK is modeled at nearly 6" on GFS but below 2" on NAM. The Canadian model uses I-44 as the dividing line...
So, per usual, it'll be a nowcast. :)
Anonymous. 01-27-2025, 04:57 PM Yea it isn't looking too great now. Looks like cold rain for E of I-44.
OKC looks to still get some action Wednesday night, but the real soaking will be SE.
