I just bought a new car. I deactivated the old Pike Pass transponder on my previous car.

I know I can get a new sticker or a license plate tag (for $25), but do I need to do either for my new car?

Don't they just read your license plate and bill you? Or is cheaper to get a sticker or tag?

you can also get an inside the window removeable one from pikepass

Yes, if you do not want to use a PIKEPASS Sticker, you may choose to use a PIKEPASS Portable. There is a one-time $25 fee. The Portable uses the same new technology as the Sticker and can be moved between vehicles of the same class that are listed on the account.

you just have to ask . i also dislike the stickers so that is what i do ..

Also you can get the Kansas K-TAG which has no prepaid account money like PikePass (who I assume uses that money to make interest off you). Works in Kansas, OK, TX and Florida.

Interesting information on the transition of Oklahoma Turnpikes to Plate Pay.

https://kfor.com/news/local/ota-projected-to-lose-millions-during-platepay-growing-pains/

I did not realize that for the turnpikes that have Plate Pay currently implemented, it is significantly more to use Plate Pay than to have a PikePass, (around twice as much!) .
When it was still a toll booth, PikePass only saved about 10% compared to the normal toll.

If this holds true, I feel horrible for those that would be paying with PlatePay when it is implemented on a frequently used turnpike like the Turner. Based upon the current toll rate, it would be close to $10 on the Turner Turnpike to/from Tulsa to OKC one way compared to the $4.50 a vehicle pays with PikePass.

The Bailey Turnpike from OKC to Lawton that has PlatePay, $3.50 PikePass vs $8.70 PlatePay.

Wondering if it really costs twice as much for the overhead of sending invoices out via mail vs. charging a PikePass account, or if they're just penalizing PlatePay users in order to try to persuade them to switch to PikePass?

It's for overhead and also to makeup for the loss revenue due to the drivers OTA can't track down or get to pay their bill.

That's also why they are pushing for drivers to get a Pikepass, they instantly know who you are without having an optical reader or human read your license plate.

The new stickers are much smaller, FYI.

Pay by Plate is like 2x the pike pass rate.

I got one of the smaller rectangular ones that's removable via suction cups (I only put it up if I know I'll be using a turnpike) because I have a MINI Cooper, which has a mini windshield and didn't want a sticker obstructing my vision. Had to call in and talk to a human to get that kind, though.

Yes, I know what the extra cost is for, but does it cost *twice* as much for overhead and missing revenue? We'll probably never know...

Especially considering, they doubled the cash price. So they laid off a ton of employees, no longer have to maintain all the toll booths and coin machines, and the cost doubled?

It only took them about a week to get me the new sticker when we bought a new car this summer. They're so small now, you hardly notice them.

With all the issues with trailers and tag reading issues, i dont understand why we dont consider using front plates like Texas. Can't block the front plate with a trailer......

Oklahoma probably will require front plates in the future. Takes time for Ok lawmakers to take it up and consider it. Would be an extra cost to drivers.

Front plates are optional in Texas now, not a requirement.

I just looked and was really surprised. 29 states require front plates. 21 don't. I didn't think anywhere near that many required front plates.

With the little 1" x 2" sticker placed right in front of the rear view mirror you can't see it from the inside.

Sure about that? Quick search shows that there is a 200 dollar fine which probably isn't going to get someone to install a front license plate if they don't really want one.

Had that Lexus RX for 20.5 years!! It was in such great condition, I sold it on Craigslist in an hour.

I bought a Genesis GV70 3.5T. I've been incredibly impressed. Every piece of tech you can imagine and faster in a straight line than my old Boxster S. After driving that Lexus for so long, the Genesis is like a spaceship.

Thanks to all the posts on this thread, I didn't realize the new stickers were so small, so I just ordered one.

The one I had on my old car was a huge eyesore.

The sticker has been easy to hide behind the rear view mirror in the last couple cars I have put them in, so when in the car they practically are not there, and it is not like I ever notice them from the outside either.

Tip, so they are a royal B1TCH to get off....that sticky stuff is great. BUUUUUT. If you park your car outside in the middle of the summer when it's 9000 degrees outside, you can get a razor blade and scrape that puppy right off. It's not in good enough condition to reuse on the next vehicle, but it's better than leaving it on there where someone that buys your car has access to your sticker until the PikePass folks can update their systems.

I did that when we bought our new car. The dealership was surprised it came off in one piece like that. They said normally, its in a bunch of pieces and takes them a while to get it all off.

The deactivation should be pretty much instantaneous once you call them or do it online. I did it online a couple of years ago and I'm pretty sure it was immediate and that tag/sticker was no longer active and didn't show up on my account any longer. It's not 1985 anymore...

They want you to leave the sticker with the car and you can immediately remove the pass from your car online with a click. It deactivates immediately

Yes, I just did this.

Left the old sticker and went to my on-line account and deactivated it. So, they can either activate it or get hit with pay-by-plate fees.

With my new car, there is no place to mount a sticker behind the rearview mirror because it is filled with various sensors. I ordered a new sticker because they are free, but I might end up having to pay $25 for a plate tag, which wouldn't be the worst thing. I tend to keep my cars a very long time.

I received my new Pike Pass sticker and thought I'd share my experience.

You can see the size relative to a penny. However, the instructions are not clear. You'd think the barcode would face outward, but it's the opposite.

As a reminder, I couldn't place this anywhere near my rearview mirror as in my car that area is completely packed with sensors.

Not sure if I'm going to keep this or pay $25 for a tag transmitter (I assume it is attached by one of the screws that hold your plate). At least with the tag, you can port it over to another car when the time comes, so it's a one-time fee.

The sticker is annoying me because it's clearly in my field of vision when I drive; just have to wait to see if I get used to it.

I absolutely trust the couple of people that have posted that the whole space in front of the rear view mirror is taken up by sensors. I'm glad I don't have one of those cars. I've had 2 cars that have "advanced safety systems". In neither did the sensors take up that much windshield. That could be obtrusive in itself. Come on car makers. This is 2024. Electronics can be very, very small.

Personally, i just don't trust how fast the system works. So yes, i peeled mine off. If the new owner of the car even has a pike pass, then they can go get their own sticker. That's why i took it off rather than just calling in.

They got me the new one really fast, so that's great. But the dealership did tell me they had heard people were waiting upwards of a month. Maybe that was in COVID times and they were just out of touch. But i dont ever leave anything that someone may be able to try to abuse that identified me when i sell a car. Any sort of parking decal or such, all of them have to come off.

With all the technology stack that comes with cars these days, i did have a little trouble getting it in the center/middle of the window. But it did still go high enough on a Pilot and an Odyssey that it still hides behind the view of the mirror for the driver. It really is nice that they are so small. But hearing that "beep" in the old days was kind of cool, but also a bit nerve wracking waiting to see if it actually beeped. LOL

It amazes me that anyone living in Oklahoma City or the metro in general would go without a pikepass. The turnpikes make going around the city so convenient and easy. But there's also a lack of understanding of the pikepasses among some people. They know they have to put 40 up front, but many seem to think that if they don't use the 40 dollars on the TPs in a certain amount of time, they lose it. I've talked to a couple people at work about this. They had no idea that, that 40 dollars will last forever if it's never used. I went three years without getting a PP after moving to the city. I've loved it ever since I got it.

I think part of the issue is that there is generally a lot of anti-turnpike sentiment around here. It's crazy but the way the highway funding has historically been here, if there wasn't a turnpike there would either be no highway or it would still be 50 years into the future before it was funded by regular state and federal funding mechanisms. Turnpikes are great IMO. I use them all over north Texas. Here, where there could be improvement is the transitioning on and off turnpikes like the Kilpatrick and all the on and offramps along Memorial. There just could be so much better reconstruction to help Memorial and May, Penn, Western, etc. Also adding an EB offramp to Santa Fe now that the turnpike plaza is no longer needed. That would alleviate a ton of the Western Ave intersection.

That's what's surprising to me, the traffic counts on the metro turnpikes in OKC and Tulsa are some of the highest in the system and have the fewest miles of road to maintain. It would seem to make more sense to fix, as you pointed out, the on ramps and overall flow of Memorial and the Kilpatrick based upon current and future demand, instead of building turnpikes in very rural areas facing a lot of opposition.

DFW does this with the NTTA, it's all metro based, other than the southern end of the Chisholm Trail Turnpike.

KTA in Kansas has ONE turnpike to maintain and is kept up well. The Kansas Turnpike stretches from I-35 at the border and goes through Wichita, Emporia, Lawrence, Topeka, and ends in KC. ONE Turnpike that goes through most of their major cities!.

Oklahoma has a bunch of rural turnpikes that are convenient, but are cross pledged with the turnpikes that bring in a lot more money. I think if the Kilpatrick, Creek, and Turner had their tolls exclusively, we would see those systems much better maintained and improved upon quicker. My understanding is that the only way the Creek and Kilpatrick got built was a compromise for YES votes with rural legislators that wanted turnpikes even though the OTA said they would continually lose money on operating them due to the low traffic counts.

I have been raised on (and sold on) the concept that the high income roads bring better roads and the potential of quicker economic development to the rural areas. We might not love everything about Kilpatrick and Turner, but I think they function as a good compromise and use of money.
