Teo9969 01-25-2023, 07:42 PM United's bread and butter is business travel that books within 3 weeks of departure date. They are usually the last to load firm schedules regarding aircraft type. As such they don't sell cheap fare buckets until they know what their actual capacity on a route will be. If you want a ticket now they'll sell you one, but it will likely be more expensive than if you book it 45 days out.
When is the best time to book long-haul international flights on United?
We go to Buenos Aires, Argentina at least every few years. I try to use points and sometimes we get incredible fares for relatively cheap (60k - 65k points for a ticket that usually runs at least $1,200). We can transfer Chase points much easier to United than other carriers so they're usually the first place we look, but sometimes it's hard to find the decent Saver fares.
catch22 01-25-2023, 08:08 PM International is firmed up much earlier (slots, route authorities etc) so typically 3-7 months out should still have good mix of fares. Rewards obviously may want to do even sooner.

Appreciate the confirmation! That seems consistent with what I've generally seen. Just hope they stop trying to connect that route to Canada for Saver fares

Booked flights to/from Europe this summer using United miles. Ended up getting them for roughly 60,000 points each in Economy which if paying would be $2k+. International tickets are stupid expensive right now.

Oooh, is Buenos Aires nice? I've been dying to go there for so long but it never makes the final cut these last 15 years for vacation. I love the idea of no jet lag.

Not Teo, but Buenos Aires is amazing. You should absolutely go.
BG918 01-26-2023, 10:07 AM Not Teo, but Buenos Aires is amazing. You should absolutely go.
I went to Buenos Aires in 2015, it was an amazing city and worth the long flight from the U.S. It has a very European look and feel but the overall culture is distinctly Latin American. Mendoza and the wine country is a fun side trip, about a 1.5 hour flight from BA. The vineyards are next to the Andes that are covered with snow even in the summer because the peaks from 18-20k ft high. Parts of the Pampas region west of BA looks just like the western parts of Oklahoma and even have a tornado season.

Argentina top to bottom is incredible. Mendoza, Bariloche, Iguazú, Salta/Jujuy, Buenos Aires, South Atlantic areas (Chubut, Tierra de Fuego). Tip Argentina on its side and it runs Los Angeles to New York, so it's truly massive.
It's a huge city with a distinct identity and some really cool characteristics. It has probably the richest economic history of any South American city and you can feel that, but the last generation has seen them fade into the background of Brazil.
3-5 full days is plenty to do the necessary things. A 2 week trip hitting up 3 of the locales I listed above is definitely a worthy adventure.

This feels more like a reason to stay far away. If I wanted to vacation in Western Oklahoma, I'd go squat on a dirt patch.

Hahaha!!
Yeah, pretty much from Buenos Aires (Capital Federal, as opposed to the province) until the Andes it feels very similar to Oklahoma, terrain and weather wise. The same latitude Buenos Aires falls on in the Northern Hemisphere is between Ardmore and Paul's Valley.
Much north or south of those latitudes it changes drastically

While there are some limitations on where you can go and when you can go, I urge people who love to travel to check out going.com which scours the Net for deals both internationally and domestically and lets you know by email when they find them. A premium subscription ($50/yr) gets you more control of what you get sent via email. This week they emailed me deals for under $600 this spring and next fall to both Madrid and Barcelona on legacy carriers. I love it and we used it this last fall to go to Ireland on $598 RT tickets to Ireland on Delta. For a family of 4 to go to Europe for $2400 we thought was a screaming deal. Ireland was awesome, too. It wasn't on my list necessarily, but the ticket price was too good to pass up, and we ended up loving the country.

Depends. I just booked a r/t to Amsterdam yesterday for travel the last week in Feb for ~$900 in Comfort+ on Delta.
oktxatty 01-29-2023, 06:55 PM That OKC-SEA nonstop could do really well as a connection to NW Canada and Alaska.
Already is - which is why they upgraded ithe flight to the 739 over a year and a half ago.
BG918 01-31-2023, 03:40 PM Kansas City's new airport opens Feb 28. From the pictures I've seen it looks really nice and will be a huge improvement over the current outdated airport. I'm hoping Southwest will build up more flights there and we will see OKC/TUL resume daily non-stops.
Just saw a Boeing 727, Kalitte Air, land at Will Rogers, looks like it parked by Atlantic Aviation/Skywest.
Surely this is not hauling passengers and is probably freight.
Any best guesses or actual in the know on this?

Kalitta Air! NHRA drag racing legends! IIRC Connie (Conrad) Kalitta was the founder in the 1960s-70s. He was a well known Top Fuel racer in the era and was most famous for being the boyfriend of Shirley Muldowney (portrayed by Beau Bridges in the movie "Heart Like A Wheel"). He was also a regular presence in the NHRA coverage on TNN of the 1980s. His son Scott Kalitta won a pair of NHRA Top Fuel annual championships before moving to Funny Car. He was killed in a Funny Car accident in 2008.
damonsmuz 02-04-2023, 11:33 AM Just received a notification from United this morning that my flight in June from OKC to Denver has been changed from an EMB-175 to United mainline A319.
Nice to see mainline returning to Denver.

I was hoping to see BWI. When does OKC-BNA start? I think BWI and BNA are the two most important adds for OKC/TUL from Southwest. I think OKC-DAL and MCI are long shots; MCI likely won’t happen until Southwest is up to 100+ daily departures from KC
Celebrator 02-09-2023, 11:12 AM I know, the loss of that BWI flight is a tough one for folks who want to get to the east coast easily. It has flights to all of their small east coast stations like ISP, ALB, PVD, and MHT. MDW has some of those, but not with the frequency BWI has, which just makes a northeastern journey tougher on WN. I am not sure we will ever see it come back though because they surely won't serve two airports in the same metro area (DCA and BWI) from our relatively small market. The Congressional delegation I am sure will make sure DCA remains on the route map from OKC. And one can make connections there, they just are far LESS in frequency and variety out of there because that is not a big WN fortress hub or anything. My wife connected there to MKE a few weeks ago and although out of the way, it was an easy connection with the small number of WN gates at DCA.

OKC-BNA has been around for a bit but as far as I can tell it's still only once a week on Saturday

Richard at Remax 02-10-2023, 09:03 AM I honestly never heard that it was going to switch to daily. That'd be nice though
amocore 02-10-2023, 09:22 AM Good morning,
https://flyokc.com/sites/default/files/January%202023%20Enplanement.pdf
Good month as expected compared to January 22 which was still under covid limitations.
Southwest still holds the lead with AA close second.
Delta and United always together for third place.
brianinok 02-12-2023, 12:01 PM Flew Southwest for the non-stop to MCO this past week. While the non-stop was convenient, yikes I was reminded why I never fly them. What a (1) cattle car and (2) customer service nightmare. Paying for A boarding group gives no guarantee you won't be seated next to large people who should have purchased more than one seat. Sorry not sorry. At least on other airlines I can control that and book first class if I want. And Southwest so overuses their gates in Orlando on Saturdays (probably from all the cities they do once-weekly non-stops) that they have flights (SCHEDULED) coming in before the prior flight leaves the gate. Their terminal is a complete disaster when all flights are on time. And there is NO lounge to escape to. I can't imagine it when even just a few flights get delayed or canceled. I'm not sure the non-stop is worth it when you can have a quick layover in DFW (or some other place) and spending the layover in a nice, quiet lounge. Geez....
Also I remember the days when Southwest employees had fun while they worked. Now they just seemed mad and rude. How sad.

If you typically book first class, have access to airport lounges, etc, then Southwest probably isn't the airline for you. They are no frills, but at least don't have the nickel and dime model as other budget carriers that charge large fees for any type of baggage, seat selection, or in-flight snacks to offset the low fare.
As for the "cattle call", Southwest actually did a lot of research in how to turn their planes quickly and keep them in the air, the gate line up and boarding groups are part of the efficiency as planes methodically fill from front to back and window seats and aisle seats typically go first. Since Southwest doesn't technically use hubs, you run into the problem that you experienced in Orlando, unlike DFW, Denver, or Atlanta, Southwest doesn't have their planes all go to one airport that they basically control every gate, (Outside of Houston Hobby and Dallas Love, where they basically do) they try to use what gates they have at the airports they fly to as efficiently as possible to keep costs down instead of leasing out more gates. HOWEVER, if things don't run efficiently, it seems it's hard for them to regroup. without using a hub type model.
BG918 02-12-2023, 02:51 PM Opposite experience yesterday. Flew DEN-TUL on United which was on a E145. I would’ve much preferred the Southwest 737. United only flying mainline on 1 of its 4 daily nonstops to DEN.

catch22 02-12-2023, 08:00 PM Yeah and even worse is boarding from the stinger gates at DEN where you have to walk out to the plane…
There are only 4 UA gates at DEN with ground loading now, and those will be closed soon to be converted to mainline capable gates.
B57/59/61 and B81 which is only used for the Landline bus to Ft Collins and Breckenridge.
B83/85/87/89/91/93 were permanently closed with the new UA East Finger opening (B62-B71).
B88/90/92/94/95 are all closed for complete interior renovation. Once those open back up, B80/82/84/86 will be closed for renovation.
When fully complete B81 will be the only ground load gate left due to it being a bus gate. I don't know of any jetbridges which work with a motorcoach. Lol.

What about an airline that gives you a discount for farting in the middle seat? That feels like Southwest.

Unlucky! Out of our 85 gates we operate you were in one of the 4 for ground loading! Those gates are terrible to work, too. Overall just a terrible experience for everyone.
brianinok 02-13-2023, 07:23 AM I forgot to mention that our flights were completely full. On random non-holiday weekends in February with school in session. If Southwest wanted it seems the demand is there to expand OKC-MCO beyond once-weekly flights. They just announced a new round of expansion in their latest schedule extension but this wasn't on there. Too bad. They'd have a better shot at getting my return business to MCO if they had something besides a Saturday non-stop. I highly recommend everyone avoid the Southwest gates at MCO on Saturdays unless they want an airport experience like you expect at O'Hare when an unexpected blizzard rolls in. They should shift some of their Saturday-only flights to Fridays and Sundays to alleviate the pressure they are putting on their MCO gates AND THEIR CUSTOMERS.

Well, from the parents I work with that have children in grade school, there seems to be no remorse or bad feelings on their part for taking their kid(s) out mid-semester for a week long trip to the Disney in Orlando. Supposedly the trip is cheaper, better weather, less crowds, etc compared to the peak travel season. Southwest is also preferred by families since they have the open seating and priority boarding for families to allow them to sit together.
As someone mentioned above a trip in a 747 on Southwest is more desireable than the smaller 2-1 configuration express jets.

I always laugh when people have complaints like this about southwest and seem so shocked by how they operate. They’ve been a major airline for most of three decades, were you just not paying attention to how it works? If you want to pay for 1st class, have access to lounges, etc…it isn’t the airline for you. If you want access to a lot of destinations out of OKC/TUL and don’t need or care about the luxuries offered by the legacy carriers, it’s a great airline. Also it isn’t technically cattle car boarding anymore but even still, I’ve never had any issue with it…it’s just different and if that’s not what you like, why fly with them and then complain about it like it’s something they try to hide from you lol.
As far as employees go I haven’t ever really had a negative experience in the 20 years I’ve been flying with them and generally I’ve found them to be much nicer than there legacy counterparts. That said, given the ringer they’ve been thrown through over the last few months…it’s not really surprising that moral may be low right now.

also southwest is NOT a low cost carrier and hasn't been for a long time

I do not understand what defines a low cost from another airlines. You are nickel and dimed on all the airlines, if you fly in economy class.
The only difference, for me, is legacy have business class and "low cost" have full economy.
It is all low cost experience seen from the back !

DEN: 3x Su-F, 1x S *competes with 4x/daily United nonstop, no Frontier currently on this route (pre-COVID there were 8x/daily nonstops to DEN)
DAL: 4x M-F, 2x S, 3x Su
HOU: 2x M-F, 1x S, 2x Su
AUS: 1x M-Su *competes with 1x/daily AA nonstop added in 2022
STL: 2x M-F, 1x S-Su *was 3x before they restored MDW
MDW: 2x M-F, 1x S-Su *restored in 2022
MCO: 1x S starts 4/15
Wonder why they get the extra daily rotation to MDW? That would be nice for us as well as it would give more possibilities to east coast destinations. Perhaps it is because we have the DCA nonstop, which I don't think was listed above.

I did miss the OKC-DCA nonstop. It is 1x M-F, not currently running weekends though that may change this summer. Hoping Southwest adds BNA for both OKC and TUL for a fun weekend trip and for Southeast and East Coast connections. OKC has the ATL nonstop that TUL does not have so SE connections are all from DAL or HOU. Delta has the only ATL nonstop from TUL and the price is double what it is from OKC because of Southwest.
Paule4ou 02-14-2023, 12:56 PM Wish we had OKC-BNA back, and even more OKC-DAL
unfundedrick 02-14-2023, 10:39 PM except for the fact that you actually have a seat before you board .... which is a huge difference
also southwest is NOT a low cost carrier and hasn't been for a long time
Southwest's lowest fares are usually not much different than the legacy carriers. However, a big difference is that their highest fares are usually significantly less than the highest on the legacy carriers.

However, a big difference is that their highest fares are usually significantly less than the highest on the legacy carriers.I think this is generally accurate. We paid $600+ per person r/t for A boarding group. I continued to check prices occasionally for the 8 months or so before departure and they never got cheaper. The legacy carriers changing planes even with extra legroom were generally marginally less than this at various times. But we paid for the convenience of non-stop on Southwest. They are often not the cheapest option. They sure would not have been this trip.
Celebrator 02-15-2023, 10:51 AM For a family of four like us, the savings come in the two checked bags FREE per person. Now we never need to check 8 bags (!) but we have checked 6 for long summer trips, so the savings there for us is significant.
But having flown Delta twice last year (one of them transatlantic) they really have a good product, and I thought the staff both here in the States and in Europe were friendly and helpful. I was very impressed all the way around. My experiences with staff on Southwest last summer---not so much. I agree, they seem overworked and just not as happy to be there as they were three years ago (understandable, but still).
Richard at Remax 02-15-2023, 11:08 AM I was worried about bag issue too switching over to AA with having 4 in my family. That being said, a basic credit card from AA is $99/year and "First eligible checked bag free on domestic American Airlines itineraries for you and up to 4 companions traveling with you on the same reservation". That's with no status. When you get even gold that starts opening up more baggage options. I'm EP and last year to Pensacola I could have checked 12 bags for free for all of us lol.
Southwest is def not the cheapest anymore so even that $99 fee for the credit card each year saved me a ton vs the flight costs of SWA. If that makes sense.
gopokes88 02-15-2023, 11:11 AM AA is the best overall option out of OKC. Unless SWA has a direct, its AA that overall stacks up the best.

Awesome, hoping TUL-MIA can go daily too. Saturday only service is really just good for cruise ship passengers.
AA serves all of its hubs except for PHL which I don’t see happening for awhile with DCA/LGA. Wish we could get United to serve all of its hubs
