United is supposedly running nonstop service to CVG for that game but I can't find it. I assume it sold out.

https://aeroxplorer.com/articles/united-airlines-adds-127-nonstop-flights-for-college-football-season.php

I believe the press release from United was a bit misleading, and some of these blog style news sites didn’t do their due diligence in researching these.

United said they would offer nonstop flights or increased capacity in these markets for game day. Emphasis on the latter. Increased capacity might mean existing spoke-hub routes have some extra seats available. This might mean, for example OKC-ORD and ORD-CVG have a larger airplane or extra frequency, not necessarily a nonstop flight OKC-CVG.

In the past they have added nonstop flights but I think the fleet is still stretched too thin to add a bunch of these, unfortunately. So you’ll see some increased gauge to hubs, vs nonstop flights. United has been good in the press lately and I think they want to stay in the press, so they are going to hype strategy moves like this even if they aren’t exactly what they seem to be on the surface.

Thanks! I remember a few people who took a United nonstop to Lincoln, NE last year for the game. So I assumed that's what was going on here.

I heard the airport spokesperson speak about expanding the parking garages. She said it was necessary due to demand and will probably have an international gate by 2025.

Anyone know anything about international service ?

I flew out today. There was an airport rep doing a survey. I overheard she mentioned trying to get some international service. Wants vs. what happens is a different story.

Somewhere upthread it was mentioned CBP had committed to staffing the FIS facility if it were built out and needed. That is big news and is often the biggest hurdle to any community getting nonstop service to an international destination. If that turns out to be true there may be some things happening in the background.

I believe AA has some international P2P out of some larger, but similar markets as OKC. I believe they run a MCI-CUN, SAT-CUN, etc on weekends and high volume times (spring break, etc).

A similar offering would not be totally out of the question given AA's overall strategy and aggressiveness in the market. Allegiant partnered with VivaAerobus for cross-border flights to midsize US cities to popular Mexican tourist destinations. This could be a possibility as well with Friday-Monday packaged itineraries.

Unfortunately that alliance is on hold due to politics in Mexico. Hope it happens as it would absolutely open up more flights from the US to Mexico.

I’m doing the Friday-Monday Allegiant nonstop from TUL to VSP next weekend. 2 hour flight then a 20 min drive to Destin or 45 min to Seaside is awesome; I can leave my house in Tulsa at 12:30 and be on the beach by 4:30. I would LOVE to see something similar to CUN and SJD

Anyone have any insight on whether AA will resume flights to Philadelphia? Or, is Philadelphia not high on AA list of expansion/return to service? Mainline to DCA,CLT and MIA and regional to LGA has been nice for the East Coast.

I would guess they do given the big international destination route expansion they announced a few weeks ago.

I would agree with that. They are going to need the feed. Atlantic secondary market (everything except LHR, FRA, AMS, CDG) is red hot from the US as leisure travelers seek different vacation destinations than traditional markets before the pandemic.

Philly performed well before the pandemic, so I wouldn’t think it would be too deep on the spreadsheet to come back.

PHL as a destination is pretty great too. Lots to see and do there, and can be paired with an east train ride to either NY or DC. Hopefully AA restarts OKC and also adds TUL, which has never been connected to PHL

Currently AA is sending 3 flights a day to ORD. Maybe peel one of those off and send to PHL. Hopefully early enough to catch most of the internationals.

With United also flying 3x/daily to ORD and Southwest 2x/daily to MDW that seems like a good trade, especially if timed well for the eastbound Europe flights.

Two major airlines announce more service to Florida from OKC
09/11/2023

Two major airlines announced extended seasonal service to Florida from Oklahoma City, just in time for fall and winter breaks.

“We’ve been targeting more non-stop service to Florida from OKC, and these additional non-stops to Orlando and Miami provide the service our market is looking for,” said Jeff Mulder, Director of Dept. of Airports. “There are also numerous connections from Orlando and Miami to destinations in the Caribbean and Latin America for our OKC travelers.”

Southwest Airlines
Southwest Airlines will begin daily nonstop service to Orlando, Florida beginning October 9 through March 6, 2024. Southwest is bringing convenient flights for customers to take a break from winter weather and letting them book their early 2024 getaways.

American Airlines
American Airlines announced in July 2023 they added daily nonstop service to Miami, Florida from December 20 through April 3, 2024. With service to more than 70 destinations across the U.S., American will offer the most convenient way for customers to take in all that Miami has to offer. Travelers can also enjoy one-stop access to the largest network of destinations across Latin America and the Caribbean of any U.S. airline.

We go to Orlando fairly regularly and have noticed more direct OKC-MCO flights by Southwest and anytime we have taken them, they have been if not completely, very, very close to full. I would love to see OKC to constant OKC-MCO daily flights for the foreseeable future.

Looking at the AA schedule, their statement is wrong. The nonstop service is still there up until Aug 7, 2024 right now (the end of their available schedule). I thought I remember it switched to daily but not 100%.

OKC Airport Trust approves parking rate increase, plans 5 years of improvements

The Oklahoma City Airport Trust and city council have approved rate increases for all parking facilities at the airport: long-term surface, covered parking and parking garages. Hourly parking is no longer free for the first hour.

“Our covered parking facilities fill up on a regular basis, and the expansion of our covered parking product will help meet the demand and level of service our customers are looking for," Mulder said.

The trust plans $54.1 million in parking capital improvements the next five years:

1. Construct a new semi-covered surface parking lot (Lot 4) to provide new public parking.
2. Upgrades to the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems in in the elevator vestibules in the long-term Blue Garage, and tunnel walkway for improved passenger experience and system functionality.
3. Upgrades to the long-term Blue Garage to improve the water tightness from the fourth floor, general painting and architectural improvements to elevator stations.
4. Design and construct a new parking garage to help provide more covered parking.

Was bummed to see that they are charging $2 minimum now for any amount of time in the garage. I loved that you could go and park in short term parking to go in and help someone with their bags at baggage claim, and then leave in under an hour and not have to pay anything at all. Was something unique about our airport that I really appreciated.

Hopefully when they build the new garage, you'll still be able to access the terminal from the non-covered parking without having to take the shuttle.

We were heavy users of the less than one hour free parking ever since they built the observation floor in the new terminal. Sadly, we no longer will get to enjoy what was a relatively cheap outing for my and son and I to go plane spotting in a nice air conditioned space. In all the times we went those spots were never full, so I don't see why they needed to get rid of the less than an hour deal.

Whatever you say. The parking rates have needed to be increased for a while. They are insanely low. A great perk for OKC, yes. But at the expense of the parking garages. They will finally get some much needed TLC.

$25/day for premium (first level) is pricey but $15/day for the rest of the garage isn’t bad compared to other airports. TUL garage is $14/day for the entire garage right next to the terminal. You can park in the garage at Fine for $12/day but then you have to take a shuttle.

There is so little news to report in this forum, I feel people just bicker at each other to fill the void.

Anyway, disappointing numbers from Delta, surprisingly good from United ( Catch will check that out, i am sure)
I am not sure why there are not Allegiant numbers. They still fly from OKC, I think.

Not surprised at Delta. I think the business travelers have slowly shifted away to WN or AA over the last year due to frequencies, time schedules, and better prices.

I did the same with my kid when she was younger. She loves airplanes and we would go to the airport, sometimes park in the cell phone parking lot, sometimes on the short term parking and look at the airplanes coming in and going out. It's not completely uncommon and now with a viewing deck and not having to go through security, you can look out at the planes and people traveling. You could spend a lot of time with a four year old answering all the questions they have about the airport, more than you would initially think.

Which is too bad, because I know DL corporate strategy for a few years now has been to capture the business traveler with, primarily, a focus on punctuality. I just heard about this on the Airlines Confidential podcast (which is great, btw, for any avgeeks out there) that they have sensors on their fleet (which is quite old but kept in great shape) on different components that tells them when they reach 80% of useful life and then DL replaces them no matter if needed or not, just so there are fewer unforseen equipment failures which lead to delays, which lead to unhappy business flyers. An interesting strategy that seems to work overall as they are highly regarded by frequent business travelers. However, their service to OKC, as we all know, is less than stellar. I do have to give it up though for what seems to be less 717s in the mix from ATL lately. We are booked in a few weeks on a business trip to EWR, and the OKC-ATL segments are A320s and the ATL-EWR segments are actually on 717s! Now service to LGA and JFK from ATL would NOT be 717s given those airports importance in the DL network. EWR is an afterthought for them in NYC, understandably.

Plane spotting is awesome (for some of us). I grew up in Glendale/Burbank and used to have my mom take me to the top of the parking garage at BUR in the late 80s/early 90s to watch planes. She would sit in our minivan and read and I would listen to the ATC on a radio and watch all of the action close up there where the runway is just a 100 feet from the old school terminal building. And I just saw a news story about the huge phenomenon that Airline Videos LIVE is now. They run a YouTube channel with shows lasting for several hours just of live plane spotting at LAX like a couple of times a week and have a HUGE following apparently. So, yeah, plane spotting is a thing.

+1, loved the new observation deck and would venture out to plane spot at WRWA and took advantage plenty of the free first hour.

Also, when we would pick up family and friends from the airport, preference was always to park in the hourly parking, take the tunnel to the terminal and greet in-person at the security gate. Much easier for us to do that and not have to worry about hitting the exact time to navigate from a cell phone lot to arrival/baggage claim pick up.

Interesting. Thank you for the explanation. I hope I didn’t come off as snarky was just curious as I’ve never heard of it before. Sounds like a cool thing. I did have an idea for a bar along the airport that had a viewing area for planes and plane traffic. I guess that’s kind of the same thing but never thought it had that much of a following.

The airport should install its own bar with an overlook area in front of the security gates for people that just want to go watch planes. That would seem to be pretty popular then.

One of the problems of plane spotting in OKC from the terminal, you are looking south onto the tarmac and with the curve of the terminal, you miss out on a lot of the approaches, especially those on the west side coming in on Runway 17R. Under most weather conditions in OKC, planes land on 17R and 17L from the north, and typically take off towards the south. The top level of the parking garage is great because you can really get a good 360 degrees of approaches.

I think you might be referring to 94th Aero Squadron, which was part of a chain of WWI-themed restaurants across the country which positioned themselves strategically so diners had runway views. I remember the one at STL growing up (there's a photo of the one at Stapleton here, too (tinyUrl): https://rb.gy/10t8x

That sound like my kind of place! WWI themed with views of the runway... Haha, I don't consider myself a hardocre plane spotter, but I can't help but watch planes on approach and what not. Especially when we get those larger aircraft that one normally does not see above OKC.

My 4 year old knows how to get YouTube going from our Google Nest Hub and he asks Google to play the Airline Videos LIVE channel. I have woken up in the early morning hours to him asleep on the couch with those hours long videos playing.

We have been fortunate enough to take him on two trips recently and he is always asking to go for another ride. Whenever a WRWA approach flies over our house he goes nuts and wants to drive to the airport to watch it land. He also is really big into helicopters, so we are looking for any outfits that offer helicopter tours.

There used to be a cafe at Wiley Post that was in the terminal building with great runway views, sadly I believe they have closed since the pandemic.

Aww man I'm bummed to hear about the restaurant at Wiley Post. I loved taking my boys there to watch the general aviation planes there. Also I hope all you semi-avid plane nerds use ADSB (globe.adsbexchange.com) or FlightRadar (https://www.flightradar24.com/) to track what all is going on overhead. We definitely get some occasional surprises at Tinker or whenever DFW has to divert planes.

FR24 app is on the homepage of my phone for quick access! I love it. Use it multiple times per day and have even considered signing up for the paid version. Sometimes we get some pretty cool, long-haul stuff flying right overhead here. Probably the coolest one recently was a KLM 777 going from AMS-MEX at about 41k feet. WAAAY up there. But I heard it and looked it up. I just get a charge out of that, I don't know why. Always have, always will. Used it with great interest in Europe this summer, too! Terrific app.

I got binoculars out and saw a Emirates A380 headed to IAH a few months back. Pretty neat

I was about the bring this one up, but read that it closed. As did Ozzie's in Norman next to the airport in Norman. Would go down and watch planes take off and land. Hope something opens up in this space and at Wiley Post and really leans into the airport vibe.
