View Full Version : Best Burgers in OKC
TheTravellers 06-11-2022, 01:57 PM Just found Bunny's has a S. Meridian location and an IG account, food looks great
https://www.instagram.com/bunnysonionburgerssouth_h/
and a website
https://www.bunnysonionburgers.com/order
Was thinking about going there today, and it's interesting. The one on S. Meridian has bunnysonionburgers.com as their website, and the one on N Meridian has bunnysfriedonionburgers.com as their website, so I'm thinking the two might not be owned by the same people? If they are, why not just have one website and one menu (or one website and two menus on that website).
^
The Bunny's on Meridian just south of 50th has been there quite a bit longer.
In fact, it used to be another onion burger place back in the 70s/80s.
I have no idea how all of them are related, if at all.

Yeah, the story of the 50th location is on their website (I think it was Joe's, then John's, then Bunny's), but when I just typed bunny's onion burgers in to Google, it came up with the S 10th one, and the logo's the same, but they have no menu nor history on their site, so, like I said, strange.

Pete, you ought to give them a try. I tried them and they were really good.
TheTravellers 06-11-2022, 04:53 PM Pete, you ought to give them a try. I tried them and they were really good.
I tried them today (50th/Meridian) and it is *not* an "onion burger", it's a (pretty tasteless) burger patty with (also pretty tasteless) grilled onions on top, no evidence of any onions (fried, grilled, or otherwise) in the patty. Fries were good, seemed hand-cut, onion rings were crap (very little actual onion), wife's Philly Cheesesteak had beef that was good, but the cheese was tasteless, and the bun was the wrong kind of bun (it fell into pieces, too delicate for the filling).
Plutonic Panda 06-11-2022, 05:05 PM Interesting I really thought it was really good.

Agree. It's pretty substandard.
soonerguru 06-12-2022, 11:23 AM Ha, good point... For me the best burger is a theta, but I've been searching for a good one ever since Irma's closed. Their sauce was great, best theta sauce I've ever had (and their burgers are the best I've had in OKC, but Lipsmackers (RIP) was second). Ones I've had that don't do it - Patty Wagon, S&B, Burger Punk, Johnnie's. It either has BBQ sauce on it, or the "hickory/theta" sauce is too BBQ-y, tomato-y, not enough smoky taste, whatever, they just don't measure up to Irma's. Found out RePublic has one while poking around, need to try it, theirs is a porter-hickory sauce.
Interesting article about the origin of theta sauce, knew some of it, but not the info before Split-T - https://www.oklahoman.com/story/entertainment/columns/dave-cathey/2018/04/08/history-of-secret-sauce-revealed/60532743007/
Also, forgot about Red Rooster - their burger is pretty good, need to build my own next time, better than Burger Punk's down the street. :)
Split T had my favorite theta sauce. Johnnie's is very good but a bit too salty. The old-school Charcoal Oven had a good, slightly sweeter theta sauce. Not a fan of the new incarnation.
soonerguru 06-12-2022, 11:31 AM Will second the Palo Santo burger, their chicken sandwich is pretty good too, we're probably going to eat there before the Belle & Sebastian show since it got moved to Beer City Music Hall (yay, don't have to deal with Friday night Bricktown, lol).
This may start something, but isn't a true "onion burger" one that has had onions mixed with the meat in the patty and then grilled (Sid's) as opposed to what a ton of people call an "onion burger" which is really just a "burger with grilled onions on top" (Tucker's, I believe (I can't eat there because they use peanut oil to fry *and* on the grill), and Nic's, IIRC)?
No. Sid's grills them with the burger, not in the burger, as does Johnny's in El Reno. It's just that they do it better than Tucker's, and I have a hunch why My Tucker's burger was uber greasy and the meat didn't taste as good. Tucker's doesn't cook the onions long enough to get them properly caramelized, or the burger for that matter. Sid's uses very thin patties which get a crispy texture along with the caramelized onions on the grill. Because of this, they don't ooze with grease when they're served, as Tucker's do. Onion burgers shouldn't be dripping with grease when they're served and the patties should be slightly caramelized, along with the onions.
Nic's is much more like the El Reno approach but with much bigger burgers. It's a different animal, but they do get the onions wonderfully caramelized and their meat is just delicious.
soonerguru 06-12-2022, 11:38 AM Also, scratch my earlier comment about Arnold's in Tulsa. A repeat visit was not as good. I mean, still a very good drug-store burger, but not the mouthwatering version I had a few months ago.

Claud's or Webber's are my wife and I's choice for Tulsa burgers. I'm a Claud's feller and she's a Webber's gal. Different strokes. Both very good burgers last we checked (which has been awhile).
Jersey Boss 06-12-2022, 11:56 AM My vote is ROBERT'S in El Reno. Has a better vibe and the prices are a little better.
The counter only sitting seems more authentic in capturing that early 20th century lunch place. SID'S and JOHNNIES lack that ambiance.

Which Tuckers? I go to the NW23rd one and it’s solid and blows out either of the El Reno spots. Tuckers uses prime beef and they cook the pattie thin and perfectly caramelize the onions IMO
if tuckers weren’t doing things proper there wouldn’t be expanding and would have went out of business

I like Robert's, too. Ambiance is one thing (Sid's is just fine), but you probably can't go wrong at any of the El Reno joints for burgers.

Blows out the El Reno spots? What? You are the only person who has ever made that claim.
I guess it's entirely possible that the last two visits to Tucker's, at two separate locations, both within the last three months, were flukes. Who knows? My burger was most definitely not caramelized, the onions were just oily and half done, and the burger was greasy. The meat did not taste like prime beef and was not well seasoned.
I have been to Tucker's 10 times since it opened and it has never once rated as high as Sid's in El Reno. Different strokes for different folks.

Not sure if Roberts is still around I never had it
Like I always “IMO” because it’s just that, I’ve always thought both El Reno spots were just ok but not worth the trip when I have tuckers right down the street on NW23rd
My wife is an okie and spent her entire life in western OK and OKC and she said Sid’s, Roberts and Johnny’s in El Reno has great slaw dogs but said the burgers were not as good as tuckers in her opinion
Not sure if Roberts is still around I’ve never had their burgers and I’ve never been to Nics but everyone I know says it’s one the best burgers they have had if not the best
Oklahoma onion burgers are suppose to be greasy haha
Roger S 06-12-2022, 07:40 PM Not sure if Roberts is still around I never had it
Ate there about 3 weeks ago and it was still there.

I hate it when that happens. I grew up in the Tulsa area and Harden's was the place to go to. The best burger I ever had and you couldn't tell me otherwise. This was in the late 80's, early 90's. Went back six years ago to their new location and it wasn't anything like I remembered it. My friend that I went with said it went downhill, but it might have been that my tastes changed as well.

Are you talking about the Ski-Boy? They're okay, really there is no competition for them. The last couple of times we were out there the service has been super slow and not the most friendly.

not sure what the name is but its right next to the crows roost and next to the little motel.
I've always thought that was an amazing burger
edit: no it is not ski boy the place I am talking about is at the lake by the bar which is by the motel called easter's side motel
thought it was fort cobb lake store but that isn't it oh well

Oh, I know what you are talking about now. I haven't had that place. The Ski-Boy is actually south of the lake as you get into Fort Cobb town. My wife, who grew up in western OK, has no recollection of a place next to that bar. She has only ever known of getting burgers at the Ski-Boy when at Fort Cobb Lake

the only reason I know about it is because I've stayed at the motel next to the little dive bar that is next to the store and they have breakfast etc and would let me order a cheeseburger for breakfast but like i said it has been years since I've been.
Just talked to my aunt that lives in at the lake and she said it was called the crows roost store which is no longer there
I remember a place that burned down maybe that was it

Yes they do. I just saw that the 5th generation is took the helm in the beginning of 2022. I haven't been since then, but I'd figure being the 5th generation of the family ownership sounds promising.

I dont think Tuckers slices their onions as fine as the El Reno joints, therefore their onions dont get cooked as thorough. Sometimes you get some tough pieces of onions in their burgers where the others have very thin cooked and sometimes crispy onions. Both are typically good though, but I'm partial to the OGs.

I completely disagree and you can look at pics on IG and on Google
We are having tuckers delivered now, I’ll post a pic
Granted, when it comes to food it’s all subjective and opinion based and I respect all opinions
shartel_ave 06-16-2022, 03:50 PM I had a burger from Nics on Robinson with my brother and his wife he said the original Nics was way better and I thought the burger at Nics place was really good.

Perfectly caramelized onions!
Plutonic Panda 06-16-2022, 04:00 PM I just had for the first time and onion burger at Nick‘s off of Pennsylvania. That was a f@cking burger. One of the best I’ve ever had. It might just be the best burger I’ve had to date.
I still contend the burger I had at Bunny’s pretty good. Nowhere near Nics though. I plan on trying Sids tomorrow on my way out.

TheTravellers 07-07-2022, 08:44 PM I keep hearing about Bar Arbolada but from the typical Oklahoman type sources. Pete have you been there? Any truth to their quality of burgers?
Not Pete, but we went there tonight before seeing Neptune Frost at Rodeo on Film Row, and can attest that they're pretty damn good. It's like if there was an ideal Steak'n'Shake or Freddy's burger that was on a pedestal somewhere that both of those copied, but Arbolada has the one on the pedestal. Two skinny patties with crispy edges, everything's in perfect proportions (mustard, ketchup, onions, 2-3 pickle slices, cheese, bun, patties), and the taste of the patties is fantastic. Fries are the same way - on a pedestal that McD's copied. I've never had fries anywhere that were too hot to pick up, but these were and they were super-crispy. All in all, one of the best burgers in OKC (dunno about America, but certainly OKC).

We were there as well before the Flatland Calvary concert. I've had their burger more times than I count, and it's still my favorite no frills burger in the city.

OkieBerto 05-14-2024, 03:44 PM It looks like my responses were deleted. I was speaking of New State. I think it is my favorite burger in town, even if it isn't the style of a traditional Oklahoma Burger. Agree here. It's a good burger I'll admit I just find myself picking other burgers fairly often.
onthestrip 05-15-2024, 03:39 PM For sure New State has one of the best normal burgers in the city. I say normal as in non-specialty, not lots of toppings type of burger.
Shenanigans abound in food reviews. Even Bar Arbolada's burger hype came from someone locally who had a connection with Alton Brown, or at least thats what I was told.

I mean, but the hype was totally worth it when I went. I wasn't expecting it to be as good as it was given the hype, but well deserved.
Still doesn't beat the BLC at Spark nor an on point Tucker's burger.
I've been to New State twice and I just don't know what to order. Texas Toast is a non-starter which eliminates 40% of their beef-burger options. I don't understand that place for $10+ a burger...at all

"The Cheeseburger" is definitely their staple burger so I would start there. While it's not to the level of Au Cheval, it is one of our favorite burgers in the city.

Also, the regular burger at New State is a double for $10.49, which is in line with what Tucker's ($11.25) and Spark ($10.50) charge for their double burgers.

This reminds me of all the places with great burgers, but I didn't consider them burger joints. The Mule is one of those places. The Drake does a delicious happy hour burger, and GHST has a simple but great-tasting burger.
The Garage is one place that I consider a decent burger joint, but I haven't seen it on here all that much. It has multiple locations that have done well, but it doesn't seem to get the love from burger fans.

Because The Garage has so many locations and its a Hal Smith joint it gets looked down a little bit. I think they have a fine burger for what it is, but probably wouldn't think of it when trying to consider the "best burgers".
But really, though, I think we have so many good burgers around its hard to pick.

Its so simple (in a good way) and so thick and so juicy. Been years since I've had it, though. I mainly frequented the Bricktown location.

Had my first one at the Edmond location (Broadway), and it was great. Tried it again a year or so later at the Western location, and it was just a sad burger, nowhere close to the Edmond one.
