View Full Version : June 2022 - General Weather Discussion
Anonymous. 06-01-2022, 08:29 AM Radar this morning is currently lit up out W again. Some places across SW OK got 4-5" of rain. This bath this morning should continue to push east and slowly weaken as it reaches C OK. Then we should have one more round tonight into Thursday morning before this much-needed system moves out of the area.

Another great, steady but not crazy, soaker today.
My lawn looks like Augusta National.
Anonymous. 06-02-2022, 07:41 AM Fantastic spring weather today and tomorrow. A chance of another more-scattered round of showers/storms is possible Friday, but it should mostly be contained to far W and SW OK.
Saturday morning into afternoon we may see an overnight MCS from the panhandles that slides E/SE across the state, models are coming into more agreement on that possibility.
Things steam up Sunday and into next week with hot temperatures invading the region and a tropical depression sliding across Florida.
Side note, I think linking images from tropical tidbits is no longer working in these threads.

It showed up nice and large for me...

I spent a lot of the and money planting new plants around the front of the house. Rain water is so much better than city water for plants.
SEMIweather 06-02-2022, 07:41 PM Yeah looks like a classic summertime NW flow pattern unfolding over the next 7-10 days and IMO those tend to overperform for Oklahoma with regards to precipitation totals.

Yep, this is definitely NW flow. Eastern OK benefitted from last night's storms but most of the state should get in on the action tonight/early am.

Anonymous. 06-06-2022, 09:04 AM SPC has Thursday outlined in NE/KS/OK for severe weather @ 15%.
We should also see another storm complex come out of SW KS tonight and make a run into the state by Tuesday morning.
Anonymous. 06-07-2022, 11:44 AM SPC has added most of the state to the Slight Risk for this evening into early morning Wednesday.
Sunshine has already returned to destabilize the region ahead of another MCS threat. Wind and flash flooding will be the main concerns again.
BG918 06-07-2022, 04:35 PM “MCS Season” is usually followed by a big heat wave. All the rain should keep temps somewhat in check but the humidity will be off the charts, think Florida swamp. ;)
SEMIweather 06-07-2022, 05:23 PM We are definitely going to bake next week. Not looking forward to it lol.
Anonymous. 06-07-2022, 05:28 PM Here is snapshot of early Wednesday morning. Models favor the heaviest concentration of storms to the eastern edges, so OKC may be just W of the worst.

Anonymous. 06-08-2022, 07:45 AM Okay so models completely flipped the forecast on this one. Looks like the heaviest action is all west of OKC this morning. NWS did issue a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for basically I-40 and south, but development across OKC is yet to occur. (7:47am)
SEMIweather 06-08-2022, 09:08 AM HRRR has had an awful last couple of months in general, but this morning has been a low point lol. Also - not that it’s affecting OKC much, but what an absolutely wild convective evolution over the last 3-4 hours. Fascinating stuff.
Anonymous. 06-08-2022, 10:59 AM This MCS was fantastic for W OK. Locally insane amounts of rain have fallen across WC OK. The Butler mesonet station is reading almost a FOOT of rain in the last 14 days. Butler hasn't had more than 6" of rain total going back to like October last year.

I got 5 inches in Tuttle from the last 2 days storms. I am ready for the rain to stop!

Feel free to move some of it to Springer for me.... My pond is still about 8' low.
Anonymous. 06-09-2022, 09:44 AM Tonight/early Friday AM will be the last hurrah of the NW flow MCS spree. Damaging wind and flash flood highest threat.
Weekend looks good and hot as we approach our first death-ridge of the summer heading into next week. Heat advisories will likely be in place with high humidity and temperatures in the 90s across OK, the water vapors in the air will keep most of us away from 100, but that won't be the case for Texas.

Anonymous. 06-10-2022, 10:48 AM NW flow is over and the heat dome is moving in. C OK as a region is at around 146% of normal rainfall for the year.
BG918 06-14-2022, 03:41 PM Looking for some kind, any kind of signal that the heat dome is moving and not seeing it until maybe late-next week as it slides to the east. Interesting to see this pattern set up in mid-June. Not totally uncommon but generally this is more of a mid-July to early-August pattern. It's even bringing in some monsoonal moisture into the 4 Corners region which is great news for that drought-stricken area.
brunnesa 06-15-2022, 03:08 PM Looks like this beautiful stretch of weather will continue for a while. It is so nice to finally have some good ole Oklahoma summer!

shartel_ave 06-15-2022, 03:13 PM Hope this summer isn't going to be like summer 2011 the year I moved to OKC, that was brutal
Plutonic Panda 06-15-2022, 03:16 PM I’m enjoying the heat.
HangryHippo 06-15-2022, 03:37 PM It’s too hot, but I’m really over the damn wind.
SEMIweather 06-15-2022, 04:10 PM As far as I’m concerned, this wind can keep blowing for as long as we stay above 90F every day. We usually get too much wind when it’s cold and not enough wind when it’s hot, IMO.

Agreed.... I mowed my yard Sunday evening about 6 PM and hardly broke a sweat until I got to the side yard that didn't have any breeze moving in it.
The next 10 days all look to be near or over 100 degrees.
Can anyone remember it being this hot for so long starting in the 2nd week of June??
This is craziness. I hate the Oklahoma summers and this one looks to be pretty awful.

Yes, hopefully not.
I was a lifeguard the summer of 1980 when we had something like 40 summer days over 100. And for some reason we didn't even have an umbrella on the lifeguard stand. Sat in the direct sun for at least 8 hours each of those 40 days plus plenty more when it was in the 90's. I remember the pool water was so warm it didn't even cool you off to get in.
I start to have flashbacks every time we start on one of these heat waves.

Hey at least you had water to get it in..... I was mowing lawns 4 days a week that summer.
We would get out as early as possible without getting complaints and practically be running behind our push mowers to try and get done before noon.

In case you start to tell this story and younger people think you are exaggerating, I just looked this up...
49! days over 100 that summer and just about every other day was over 95.
This was a summer when I was home from college and my parents would never (as in never) run the A/C overnight and usually wouldn't even turn it on until well after noon, when it was already scorching hot. And I bet our thermostat was never set much below 80.
BG918 06-16-2022, 04:43 PM Some moisture appears to be returning to the state late next week as the high shifts to the east. Could be a tropical disturbance that impacts our weather as well, it has been showing up the past few model runs.
Anonymous. 06-16-2022, 04:46 PM You guys remember correctly, 1980 is tied [1934] for the second hottest summer on record. Average was 85.9F
2011 smashed that record though, OKC had 63 days of 100F or higher. Average was 87.5
I think this year we have had enough moisture early on to cap some of the air temperatures. However, humidity is in play for 2022 and it doesn't matter what the thermometer says when you are over 90F with 70+ dewpoints. It is miserable.
This is where the breeze really helps.
I've been getting up very early to get everything done outside, and it's been very pleasant before 8 AM.
But hot and windy drys things out very fast. Lawns and gardens are going to suffer.

Yeah.... We didn't run the AC in the truck between jobs just to try and stay acclimated to it.... To this day I don't run an AC in my truck because being stuck in an office it's the only way for me to stay acclimated for all the stuff i do outdoors..... Headed to the golf course right now!

Being a poor college student, my car at that time didn't even have A/C.
It was like driving a microwave.
PaddyShack 06-17-2022, 08:27 AM For me seeing how hazy/dusty the sky is makes the heat seems worse. For some reason I feel the heat and humidity more when it is not clear outside. I assume it is a mix of the dewpoint and the wind kicking up dust that makes it so hazy.
okatty 06-17-2022, 09:29 AM ^They’ve been talking quite a bit on the weather about the dust being from the Sahara Desert. I was in Austin last weekend and it was a big topic there, and the track was showing it going right up thru Okla to KC, etc.

Yeah I here how great it is an all, but boy does it make our city look bad... I had a friend comment on our "smog" problem and I had to always remind him that is dust blowing in!
SEMIweather 06-17-2022, 03:51 PM Maybe an outside shot (10-20%) at some pulse storms tomorrow and Sunday as the ridge weakens slightly. These would likely be brief and non-severe, if they do form. Thereafter, the ridge will strengthen once again and we will be dry and in the upper 90’s all of next week. Really not seeing much of an opportunity for this pattern to break before the end of the month.
Bill Robertson 06-17-2022, 04:15 PM Yes, hopefully not.

I remember that year. I was working as an electrician and going to school part time.
But I don't remember being miserable like I am now at 63 when it's 100.
okatty 06-17-2022, 06:06 PM Summer of ‘80 was first summer after my freshman year of college, and being from far SW Okla i went back to work on the farm. Irrigated cotton, plowed wheat fields (no cab tractor), worked cattle, etc. It was brutal and was not just 100 - many days down there were 105-110 air temp (for over 60 straight days). I can validate Pete’s recall on how brutal that summer was.

IIRC that is when St Helens blew its top.

It was that summer that started me down the path to moving to California.
My parents lived in Warr Acres which meant that we got cable TV before OKC. That also meant we got the Cubs on WGN and the Braves on TBS.
I would purposely watch the night games they played on the West Coast and as I sat there sweating my tail off after 8-10 hours in the intense sun and brutal heat, I envied all those Californians in light jackets in the middle of July; and if the game was in San Francisco, they were often wearing full coats.
I flew out there in early September of 1982, as OU was playing at USC. And went to a night game at Dodger Stadium and didn't bring a jacket or sweatshirt and it was downright chilly by the time we left.
Right then and there, I decided I was moving west at some point in my life. And for 25 years, every place I lived but one didn't have or need A/C. And the one place that did have it -- my house in Thousand Oaks -- I probably turned it on once or twice a year and never at night. In fact, the summer evenings were so nice and cool that if I left a window cracked I usually had to get up in the middle of the night and close it.
People rave about the weather out there but there is no way to comprehend how amazing it is until you actually live there. Warm, gently sunny days, nice cool evenings and mornings. I'll never not miss that.
SEMIweather 06-20-2022, 12:20 PM Might actually get a decent cold front moving through during this upcoming weekend, which could give us at least a small stretch of below-average temperatures (lows in the upper 60’s, highs in the upper 80’s). Still hot hot hot between now and then.
Libbymin 06-20-2022, 01:59 PM Really not fun when you find yourself needing to call an AC repairman in this kind of heat. I honestly don't know how people are able to live without AC in this part of the country.

Watching that in the models, it *looks* like there could be a pattern shift as the high moves eastward. Interesting this summer is the lack of an early ridge over the western U.S. which has started an early monsoon season for those areas

Yeah, would love to see that stick around, the four corners region needs rain so badly. Could also indirectly benefit OKC in the form of less wildfire smoke.
BG918 06-26-2022, 12:01 PM Unfortunately this front won’t bring much in the way of moisture for most of OK. Some areas in the NW and Panhandle received rain which is continued great news for those areas. Really need some rain in central and eastern OK now, it’s been a couple weeks now and with the hot temps it is getting dry fast. Next best chance comes next weekend with another front passage.

Anonymous. 06-27-2022, 09:48 AM Yes, heat dome continues to meander around the plains for at least another week. Drought is building back in across OK, and TX is dry as a bone. Expecting an increase in grass fires due to fireworks for the next couple weeks.

Though some of the hardest-hit areas like northwest OK and the Panhandle have seen multiple days of rain which is almost unheard of during this time of year. I know Wichita has received a good deal of moisture in the past two weeks while areas just to the south have been dry. Just an odd pattern.
BG918 06-29-2022, 05:38 PM Rain chances have really diminished for OK this weekend. There could be some in the southeast with a tropical disturbance. Possibly better chances the week after the 4th. Lawns will be browning if they haven't already....

You just had to remind me of the fun summers I had in college at OSU. That was my last summer up there before getting hired just a month before graduation in the fall. I had horses during college. I needed hay. I worked for a guy on his hay crew in exchange for hay for my horses. We would haul hay all night and his wife would fix a big country breakfast. I would go back to the dorm and sleep all morning and go to class in the afternoons and study until almost dark. Around dark the work would begin. He had lights on tractors and hay trailers. Just remember how hot and dusty it was. I was a dumb broke college girl who wanted horses. Even then hay haulers were hard to find. I remember getting laughed at, other farmers in the area told him that he was hard up having to hire a woman to load his hay.
Bunty 06-30-2022, 02:48 AM Hauling hay is very tough work. Yet, it would seem young guys would welcome it as a way to build up their muscles and make some money, along with maybe working with a girl or two who loves horses.
