Libbymin 08-25-2021, 05:16 PM I haven't been to NO in a good while, but I don't think the area near Tulane is great. Stick to the touristy areas of NO. This would be incorrect. Uptown is actually a pretty good part of town and there are a lot of old homes in that area. Much more laid back than downtown too. As with any major city though, it's best not to wander too far off the beaten path at night. There is The Boot right off Campus but you'll be hanging out with a bunch of college freshmen, just to be warned. There are also some bars and stuff on Maple which isn't too far from Campus. It's not really the same as a Campus Corner though. I strongly recommend Camellia Grill for burgers, fries, shakes, and chatty staff. Be prepared to wait in line though depending on when you go. You can get there pretty easily by taking the streetcar. catcherinthewry 08-25-2021, 06:55 PM Thanks, Maple St looks like it has several good options. SEMIweather 08-25-2021, 07:44 PM Maple Leaf Bar on Oak Street is great, especially if you're looking for live music. kzizok 08-26-2021, 07:56 AM You may need a boat to get around. whatitis 08-26-2021, 08:10 AM our group is all rolling back to the canal / bourbon st / harrahs casino area after the game .. (also where we are staying ) Same here. that's a lot of good games that day (bama vs miami, texas vs louisiana, and georgia vs clemson) so I am wanting to hit mostly sports bars and catch big chunks of those games. Hopefully this tropical storm doesn't mess everything up. catcherinthewry 08-26-2021, 08:12 AM You may need a boat to get around. I'm definitely keeping an eye on that possibility:mad: Zuplar 08-26-2021, 08:19 AM This would be incorrect. Jeepnokc 08-26-2021, 09:40 AM There are some decent places on Magazine also. We just got back last week from moving my son into Loyola New Orleans. Be advised that every bar and restaurant requires for inside entrance, proof of vaccination or a negative test within 72 hours. Masks are also required. Having a pic on your phone works. My wife and I belong to Krewe of Tucks so we are in NOLA often. Here are a few places we like: For great red beans and rice, gumbo or poboys when in the quarter, hit NOLA Poboy https://www.yelp.com/biz/nola-poboys-new-orleans-2 You can thank me later.:lol2: As you are walking down Bourbon, you will start coming into the area where the gay clubs start. You will pass Napoleon's Itch in the block before. It says it is a nightclub but really is just a walk up bar for to go drinks. These are the best mojitos my wife and I have ever had. Usually 8-10 flavors all made with fresh muddled fruit (blackberry, watermelon, cucumber, jalapeno, blueberry, strawberry). My wife makes us go get several when we are walking around the quarter. https://www.yelp.com/biz/napoleons-itch-new-orleans The best chargrilled oysters we have found is at Desire at the Royal Sonesta. They have a happy hour in the late afternoon. https://www.sonesta.com/us/louisiana/new-orleans/royal-sonesta-new-orleans/desireoysterbar For a really good sazerac....the Sazerac bar at the Roosevelt Hotel. Speaking of Sazerac, the Sazerac House just opened on Canal. It offers free tours but must be booked online. You get to try a few samples and is a cool tour. https://www.sazerachouse.com/ catcherinthewry 08-26-2021, 10:26 AM Thanks for all the suggestions. I love NOLA and have been several times. It is one of the top 5 food cities in the US in my opinion. So many great options. aDark 08-26-2021, 10:30 AM I'll be down there as well. Other than a couple college bars before the game I don't intend to stay in the Tulane area after the game. We'll probably head to the Frenchman Street area. It's the best alternative to the Bourbon street silliness. Although, I think Bourbon street may be a touch more fun this year since the city won't be overrun with tourists due to weather, covid vaccine requirements, etc. Should be a lot of OU fans running the city, tbh. catcherinthewry 08-26-2021, 10:52 AM Although, I think Bourbon street may be a touch more fun this year since the city won't be overrun with tourists due to weather, covid vaccine requirements, etc. Should be a lot of OU fans running the city, tbh. Bowser214 08-26-2021, 11:07 AM Southern Decadence 2021 has been canceled. https://www.fox8live.com/2021/08/21/southern-decadence-organizers-cancel-2021-events-requiring-new-orleans-city-permits-mayors-office-says/ Libbymin 08-26-2021, 12:34 PM I second hitting up the Maple Leaf for some live music or if you're a little more in the Garden District, there's always great live music at Tipitna's which is pretty well known. Magazine Street has some good places too and for those into shopping, it's not a bad place to go during the day for that sort of thing. I personally liked sitting out on the patio and eating lunch and having a drink at Cavan last time I went. Jeepnokc 08-27-2021, 02:08 PM From Loyola's President to students The City of New Orleans has now called for a voluntary evacuation. Ida is now a hurricane and is predicted to become a Category 3 or 4 storm before making landfall west of us. The current forecast for our area predicts tropical storm conditions, but the concern remains a last minute shift, as well as the possibility of heavy rain far from the storm’s center. catcherinthewry 08-27-2021, 02:10 PM I've heard from a reliable source that Tulane is meeting today to discuss contingencies. Do not want a bunch of unvaccinated Louisianians mingling with a bunch of unvaccinated Oklahomans. Not only would it be a superspreader event, it would probably create a new variant that is both more infectious and ranked dead last in education. Jokes aside....Tulane and Loyola both have mandatory vaccination for students and New Orleans has a mask mandate in effect as well requiring proof of vaccination or negative test to eat in restaurants. Although OK has a couple percentages more of state wide fully vaccinated (OK 43.1% LA 40.9%), NOLA is nearing 80% of residents having at least the first shot https://www.fox8live.com/2021/08/24/new-orleans-nearing-80-vaccination-status/ GoGators 08-28-2021, 01:08 PM Do not want a bunch of unvaccinated Louisianians mingling with a bunch of unvaccinated Oklahomans. It is a Top 50 ranked university and an AAU member. That fanbase wouldn’t be a bunch of random anti-vaxxers from rural Louisiana traveling to Norman. Libbymin 08-29-2021, 11:01 AM Yes and as someone who attended Tulane as an undergrad, the vast majority of the students aren’t even from Louisiana. Lot of students from all over the country. Bill Robertson 09-04-2021, 03:35 PM All the pregame discussions I heard talked about how their QB was going to have no time to pass. That was not the case. Defensive line and the secondary need to get better fast. WheelerD Guy 09-04-2021, 05:14 PM I was surprised at how bad OU’s defense looked. Is Mike Stoops back on the staff? Mississippi Blues 09-04-2021, 09:31 PM That’s what I thought as well but then the announcers said that this is supposed to be an impressive defense, so I tried to mellow out some, then came the second half. That second half has me about as pessimistic as I’ve felt in awhile about the defense, partially because the offense didn’t look very consistent which really highlights when the defense is struggling. When they (the offense) had big plays, they looked unstoppable but then at times they would struggle to get the ball further than a couple of yards down the field at a time. Overall, I feel like the result was more a case of OU getting up big and taking their foot off the gas and it made it look a lot scarier than it otherwise would’ve. We’ll see how it progresses in the upcoming weeks. I think at the very least we’ll see OU drop some in the standings but hopefully they can recompose themselves early on in the season. dcsooner 09-05-2021, 05:46 AM OU to SEC? Those teams are aggressive playing clean but hard nosed football. OU style of play (finesse) on offense and no defense will lead to average seasons. Don’t bet on this team beating Tex or ISU. Definitely not a top 5 team It was a poor showing in the second half but I wouldn’t give up on them yet. All it takes is a quick look at the scores yesterday to see they weren’t the only ranked team to stumble a bit out of the gate. At least they didn’t lose or get destroyed like several heavily favored teams did. The SEC outside of Alabama didn’t exactly look like a power house Conference either, especially with LSU almost getting run off the field by UCLA. ATM’s QB had 4 INTs and they were locked in a close game with Kent St until the second half and Georgia, while great on defense, was rough on the offensive side (though obviously Clemson was a big time opponent for a first game). Texas looked improved though I don’t know that I’d prop up ISU who had a similar start to OU but against an FCS school with their 16-10 win over Northern Iowa. KSU on the other hand looked very good. OU had a shaky start in kind of a weird game scenario but it isn’t the end of the world. At least they won. Now if we’re having the same conversations after Nebraska or a few weeks of Conference play…then we should definitely be concerned. |
