View Full Version : Uncommon Ground Park (2nd & Coltrane)
Johnb911 07-13-2021, 02:42 PM Anyone know what's going on with the field on the north side of 2nd, just west of Coltrane? They cleared a bunch of trees and are maybe doing some leveling? Haven't looked too closely other than all the trees going down.
Richard at Remax 07-17-2021, 01:42 PM New Park
It's part of the Willowood drainage project.
A creek runs through that property.
Richard at Remax 07-21-2021, 09:04 AM A man I office with bought the property with his foundation and is laying the groundwork and will start construction of a park in a joint effort with the city of Edmond. I've seen the plans and it looks pretty cool.

Are they going to try and save lots of the old-growth trees down there? Please say yes.
Richard at Remax 07-21-2021, 11:08 AM From what I saw they are taking out the trees that were in bad shape and leaving the mature ones behind.

My thoughts as well.

Can you share any details? This is exciting!

Richard at Remax 08-19-2021, 10:04 PM Going to be in the $15-$20 mil range. Will have restaurants as well. Going to be pretty sweet from the plans I saw the other day.
Johnb911 08-28-2021, 05:47 PM There is an article about this in the newest Edmond Outlook. Going to be a sculpture garden, among other things.

Plutonic Panda 08-28-2021, 06:48 PM It would be cool to see a world class topiary garden here.

WOW! This is a WONDERFUL project. Really hope it comes to fruition as shown. It has always been a lovely piece of property and now all will be able to enjoy it.
shawnw 03-10-2022, 01:00 PM Looks great, but from a master planning perspective, there's a bit of a missed opportunity. This park isn't very far from the very excellent spring creek trail. They should have planned to extend that trail and integrate it with this park, long term, with the trail going through the park, for a future connection on the other end, whenever they got around to extending it again even farther in the future.

ChaseDweller 03-13-2022, 06:16 PM Skatepark, but no disc golf. That's too bad. It would be a great place for another great Edmond course.
Richard at Remax 03-13-2022, 10:41 PM I'm told the skate park area is still TBD. Everything else is a go
Celebrator 03-13-2022, 10:50 PM The skate park doesn't seem like a good fit for this project. There's a nice one at Mitch Park, do we need another?
Johnb911 04-21-2022, 12:04 PM Anyone know a rough timeline on this?

Forgot to give an update. At CNU I spoke extensively to the city of edmond bike planner and they DO intend to extend the spring creek trail (might be called something else) up to and through this park, long term.
Johnb911 04-22-2022, 07:59 AM I'm sure it's somewhere on here, but I remember seeing that the Spring Creek trail is supposed to be extended eventually and tie into Hafer park. Could very easily split off and run up Coltrane. There is sidewalk already in place for *most* of the section between where the creek crosses under Coltrane and the location of the park. Or you could run the trail up along the I35 frontage road and tie into the sidewalks that are already in place for *most* of 2nd street between the highway and Coltrane

Asked today and was told ~2 years

The city posted about receiving funding or a grant to extend the spring creek trail west from fox lake to coltrane. One more mile west would get it to Hafer Park. Once that happens they are able to connect Fink Park. And maybe theres already a trail connecting Mitch Park to Fink, so that would link them all up, A simple path up Coltrane to this new park would be pretty easy I'd think. Hopefully this happens sooner rather than later.
oklip955 04-22-2022, 03:59 PM Unfortunately these trails will be closed to me I dont ride bikes and really not into walking with bad knees. I want to ride them or drive a cart like a road cart ie two wheel cart. When one does not want to haul ie getting too old for that and wants to just go out there front gate, what is one to do? The roads are gettign way too busy to walk/ride or drive on them. I moved to where I am so that I could do that.

Celebrator 05-11-2022, 11:29 AM Very happy to see more of this project. What a great use of that land.
It looks very similar to Scissortail Park.
PhiAlpha 05-11-2022, 02:56 PM Always loved that lot. Glad to see it’s going to be something like this instead of another cookie cutter neighborhood that clear cuts all the trees.
Anonymous. 05-11-2022, 04:50 PM Starting with the mature trees already in place is going to be huge.

PaddyShack 05-16-2022, 05:01 PM What was the building labelled "Park Offices", looks to have been pre-existing? Also would be cool if the adjacent neighborhood gets to have access from their backyards.
Plutonic Panda 05-19-2022, 05:25 PM Has there been names suggested for this new park?

that name just isn't sitting well with me, I just think coffee shop.

One of the first Seattle-style (for lack of a better term) coffee shops was called Uncommon Grounds. Opened in very early entertainment-district Bricktown circa '89 or '90 and lasted until (I think) the late aughts, until the landlord tried to double or triple their rent. It was a cozy spot; the kind of place Bricktown needs more not less of.

progressiveboy 06-23-2022, 10:43 AM Great renderings! Looks well executed! I think Edmond needs to attract more major business, most specifically corporate headquarters from outside the State. Edmond has been a bedroom community for way to long. Time to step up for long term sustainability!

They are too NIMBY for that. Like, all of DFW suburbs are thr least NIMBY areas I have ever seen, hence them getting relocations and growth. Edmond, being super, super NIMBY, gets neither. They are fairly stagnant, development-wise.

The Nimby culture in Edmond will hurt the city and it's long term sustainability. It will always be a bedroom community if they do not want to grow and prosper. It will eventually decline. Anyone that is against growth for a city should be aware this will hurt them long term. If Plano, Frisco, Prosper can do it, then I do not see why Edmond would not be able too!

But they bought a house there 20 years ago and apparently along with that comes the right to not have to see any new structure go up within view from their back porch! And if the developer-friendly city council is going to allow such a travesty, there at least needs to be a 200ft buffer with a redwood forest and a 20ft high masonry wall at the property line!

Loved Uncommon Grounds, used to frequent it when I went downtown in the early 2000’s

Working within the city government and not speaking on its behalf. You are correct.
The residential growth will happen. That’s not stopping. Without redefining the city’s trajectory with business growth sales tax will suffer and the NIMBY residents can and will reap what they sow when the level of city services they’ve become accustomed to degrades.
Pot holes? Sorry. Medical emergency? Sorry all fire apparatus ate busy and EMSA is, well EMSA. Need to report a suspicious person in your neighborhood to police? Sorry police staffing won’t have the tax base to grow so you can wait an hour or two like in other cities.
Edmond with its size ant location has enormous untapped potential. But it’s going to take a Mayor and Council with common sense to do what needs to actually be done to take that leap.

Celebrator 03-30-2023, 04:42 PM Anyone know why this seems to be moving SO slowly?
As you can see from the photo of around 11 AM on a Thursday, very few workers out there.
No idea why.
Richard at Remax 03-30-2023, 06:25 PM The owner insists on doing a lot of the dirtwork between himself and a small crew. City in no hurry to move it along. Still on pace to be fully completed within 2 years
MelOK 03-31-2023, 10:54 AM We live just East of the intersection there... and see work being done everyday. Some days there are a dozen workers there or more. A lot of work is being done on the far NW corner, hidden by trees, but most work is constant at the 2nd street area where they are building it up for the future restaurants/parking.
We really can't wait to hear what restaurants may go in there... really hoping for 2... a nice sit down, (PLEASE... Bring Mama Rojas and/or Charlestons!) and a sandwich/picnic style (Louies, Jasons) for takeout with all the special events that will go on there. We are excited, and wish it were to be done in 2024! ❤️

I hope no national chains. I'd prefer to see restaurants from our local ownership groups.
