View Full Version : February 2021 - General Weather Discussion
Guess my comment about stitt got deleted. I thought it was relevant since there is discussion ongoing about the rolling blackouts. Stitt did go on channel 9 this morning discussing this event and thus showing how clueless he is. Of well. Sure this will be deleted as well.
Making a statement of fact is one thing; anything else is political and should only be posted on the Politics forum.
Anonymous. 02-16-2021, 01:04 PM Our next wave of snow is developing now on the south side of the Amarillo radar. Should be coming into OKC around 5pm.

C_M_25 02-16-2021, 03:07 PM Our heater is down now too. Think it’s frozen condensate drain pipes too I think. Luckily somebody is able to come out.
I had to go to my office today and was surprised by how bad the roads are.
I suppose that's what happens when it's too cold for it to melt and there haven't been many people out driving.
Libbymin 02-16-2021, 04:10 PM And now my toilet pipes are frozen. Good thing we filled the tub with water.
corwin1968 02-16-2021, 05:17 PM Here comes the snow...
None yet, in far NW OKC
OkiePoke 02-16-2021, 05:26 PM Snow in NW OKC
Outhunder 02-16-2021, 05:29 PM At least this snow will be prettier without the wind.
Bill Robertson 02-16-2021, 06:12 PM And now my toilet pipes are frozen. Good thing we filled the tub with water. One of ours froze during an hour that our power was shut off. I slightly enlarged the hole where the pipe comes out of the wall and rigged a hair drier to blow hot air in the hole when the power came back on. It thawed it quickly and there aren't any leaks so I think I lucked out.
The Mesonet low temperature map for today shows every station below zero. Gotta be a first.

Plutonic Panda 02-16-2021, 11:33 PM Has anyone rescued any animals? I’ve had some bizarre instances. I have a mother raccoon and two babies(which I read is unusual this time of year)in my greenhouse who didn’t try and fight me at all when I grabbed her(with heavy gloves of course) and her babies were just on life support but they’re better now. I found a large black snake of all things I placed into my smaller greenhouse. I also have a robin who was so malnourished and cold he/she could barely and I have it in a bird cage and I let it play in the bathtub and it had a blast in the water. I also have a possum who found its way into the garage but I won’t bother getting it out until it warms up until then I’ve been feeding it dog food.
They’re wild animals so I want to get them out as soon as possible but I’m thinking of waiting until Thursday or Friday when it warms up a bit. I don’t think the animal shelter will take them. Oddly enough I’ve had a very interesting tree frog who seems to have taken occupation in my greenhouse as well since October and I’ve just been letting crickets loose in there from time to time.
Had anyone else put up some critters seeking refuge?
PS, anyone have any good tips on caring for a wild robin for a few days? I read they don’t like bird seed but I placed suet in there along with diced apples. I might go to see if I can find some mealworms tomorrow.

Mine is still not working because the minute we got water moving through the lines insteadof ice...the water went away.... and my neighbors house/car caught fire...adding more frozen stuff....OVER IT!!

How did you get water moving in them again? My run of pipe that could have froze is around 40 ft. We got a hotel for the night. I didn’t trust our fireplace to keep us safe last night.
Still snowing!
This storm was far from a 'bust'.... I have at least a foot of snow at my house from the 2 storms.
Anonymous. 02-17-2021, 09:17 AM Yea my place downtown there has to be about 10-12" and that includes some packing and melting from the first storm.

Measured nearly 12" at my place downtown. Watched 3 people get their lower profile cars stuck outside my window since late last night. One managed to make his way out of it. Another had to shovel himself out.

Here too. I had the driveway cleared enough to get in and out after round one. That was a good 6 to 8 inches. Just now I removed another 6 to 8. While stopping to check my heart rate every so often. Not a problem need now.
floyd the barber 02-17-2021, 10:41 AM I dont know how I'm going to leave the neighborhood for the next three days. Wife and I need to work, but we live in the end of a cul-de-sac. Which means traffic is sparse.
Unless it warms up to 60°F or a plow comes, both unlikely, we are snowed in. Our vehicles are not designed to go through this much snow.

Neighborhoods are pretty bad. Then you get to a street that is plowed and the snow bank on the exit to the neighborhood is real high. Stay safe. No melting really occurring until Saturday it looks like.
^
Yep, me too.
Looking out this morning, my cul de sac doesn't even have tire tracks. Not sure I could even get out of my driveway.
I'm well-provisioned but am not going anywhere for the next few days.
Anonymous. 02-17-2021, 11:32 AM Temperatures will probably get over 32F on Saturday, but not too much higher. Sunday and Monday will be the real melting days.

Bellaboo 02-17-2021, 12:02 PM I just scraped a lot of snow off the drive. With the sun out bright, where I scraped to the concrete it's already melting.
Yeah, as long as the sun shines snow will melt well below freezing temps.

I know it's tough to predict, but what are your thoughts on the rest of winter? Could this be the last of the bitter cold, or do you think in 2-3 weeks the arctic air will come back down?
BoulderSooner 02-17-2021, 01:18 PM Yeah, as long as the sun shines snow will melt well below freezing temps.
The solar radiation does the trick.
Plutonic Panda 02-17-2021, 01:23 PM I’m probably SOL but anyone see any snow shovels anywhere for sale?

I went to both Ace and Lowe's yesterday and they said they've been cleaned out for a week.

Is it light and dry enough to try a leaf blower? Doesn't get it all but it gets 98% if the snowvisvright.

I have a very powerful EGO leafblower and it didn't work well at all.

Yeah, it's got to be really light and dry powder.

I’ve also compacted it with cars and walking. I had a snow shovel and it snapped in half.

Might not help at this point, because everybody may be out of them too, but when we moved back here in 2009, we bought a grain scoop, works quite well.
BoulderSooner 02-17-2021, 04:42 PM i used my gas powered ECHO blower and a big outdoor broom and my driveway is clear ...
i did do this twice (i did it in the cold on monday ) and again today ..
emtefury 02-17-2021, 07:57 PM When I moved to OKC, the movers laughed at my snow shovels. I am one of the few in my neighbor to shovel my driveway when it snows.
OKCbyTRANSFER 02-17-2021, 09:48 PM They are working hard clearing the streets downtown (even now at 9:30PM) Still plowing and loading the snow in trucks for transport to the monster pile of snow by the peak.
Won't help me as I'm stuck in our garage and then our side street not touched, my car is idle a few more days.
Good to go for the buses
Jeepnokc 02-17-2021, 09:57 PM I have a long driveway as I live on an acreage by airport. Cleared the drive this morning with the tractor and by evening it was dry and clear of snow and ice thanks to the sun. My office downtown didn't appear to have melted at all so I have skid steer going in tomorrow to clear it
Libbymin 02-17-2021, 10:14 PM There are certain things I need to be able to do in the actual office downtown this week. I’m hoping I can get out tomorrow but I’m not optimistic in my car. May have to get a Lyft or something.
mugofbeer 02-17-2021, 10:27 PM Just watch out for those speeding, empty pickup trucks.
Jeepnokc 02-17-2021, 10:35 PM Just watch out for those speeding, empty pickup trucks.
I pulled out at least 10 vehicles today (between Western/240 and 104 and MacArthur) with my jeep and only one was a pick up. One lady in an altima commented that she was going to head home as she was no longer in the mood for pizza. (It was in driveway to Little Caesars) Seriously.....don't get out in this if you aren't in a four wheel drive
Jersey Boss 02-17-2021, 10:55 PM When I moved to OKC, the movers laughed at my snow shovels. I am one of the few in my neighbor to shovel my driveway when it snows.
Haha. That reminds me of the time I was shoveling my driveway and a guy stops and says "You're not from around here, are you."
TheTravellers 02-18-2021, 08:41 AM Anybody know how the streets are today? Need to get from NW 36th/May to 15th/Blvd in Edmond to board our cat, and all we've got are Honda Civics. :(
bucktalk 02-18-2021, 08:46 AM The main streets in Edmond have been plowed but some intersections are still pretty slick. I would think if you can go up Broadway Extension, once you get into Edmond you'll be good to go.
d-usa 02-18-2021, 08:48 AM Snow routes are looking pretty good, and other main streets are decent. Both with snow and slick spots at intersections, so approach slowly. Neighborhoods are ****, and four wheel drive will be your friend there.
T. Jamison 02-18-2021, 09:11 AM I took my 2,365lb, 1.6 liter, 110 horsepower Hyundai out in Edmond yesterday. I had to get out and push an SUV, but I didn't have a single issue. If you feel confident driving in the snow, you should be fine. Section line roads in Edmond were clear and the side roads and parking lots were the main problem
TheTravellers 02-18-2021, 09:35 AM Thanks all, driven on ice/snow for decades, so as long as it's not piled up too high, sounds like I'll be OK. Just gotta get all the snow off the car now.
FighttheGoodFight 02-18-2021, 10:12 AM Haha. That reminds me of the time I was shoveling my driveway and a guy stops and says "You're not from around here, are you."
I have that one neighbor who moved from up north and brought this snow blower. He loves when it snows here to show it off.

He loves when it snows here to show it off. After the two big snow storms in 08 or 09 we bought 2 snow blowers at work. Maybe used once or twice since then. But I was really glad we had then this week. They saved a lot of time and back ache.
Libbymin 02-18-2021, 02:00 PM Getting out of my neighborhood was a little slick in my SUV but not terrible. Once I got to 23rd though, the roads were fine.

Prolly could have made some bux on the side! Lol.

Yeah. But risk getting fired from a very good job. They're owned by the Fed Govt.
I had to run to my office and the side roads are still in terrible shape.
Hopefully that will change before Monday as temps continue to climb.

Hopefully that will change before Monday as temps continue to climb.^ Yes they are. Today was the first time I drove my car. We've been driving the Jeep. I backed out of the driveway and had to take a couple of runs at going forward.

Saw one of the city's snow plows get stuck off and being towed off Western next to Sushi Neko yesterday afternoon. Also saw 3-4 cars stuck near Super Cao Nguyen. Those side streets are awful and will likely be through the weekend as long as it refreezes overnight.
SEMIweather 02-19-2021, 06:06 PM Roads have definitely improved a lot today. Can't vouch for the side streets but anything that has a reasonable amount of thru traffic seems to pretty much be fine, and the main roads such as Expressway and SH-66 are completely cleared.
BTW, get excited, it's looking like we should hit the 60's on Tuesday. A couple of systems move through thereafter to cool things down somewhat, but not currently looking to be anything worse than lows in the 20's and highs in the 40's.
stratosphere 02-20-2021, 11:09 AM I got out yesterday for the first time in nearly a week. I was in my better half's 4x4 so obviously no issues whatsoever. Sunshine is beautiful and hopefully we can thaw out.
Bunty 02-20-2021, 01:57 PM After the two big snow storms in 08 or 09 we bought 2 snow blowers at work. Maybe used once or twice since then. But I was really glad we had then this week. They saved a lot of time and back ache.
The Christmas Eve Blizzard of 2009 was unforgettable.
Bill Robertson 02-21-2021, 05:05 PM It's amazing to me how bad last week was and today except for the piles you wouldn't hardly know it snowed.
^
This is why I hate snowplowing...
It maybe gives you a day or two of clearing in exchange for a week or more of slow-melting mess and black snow piles.
I didn't shovel one bit at my house and every single bit of snow is gone, and everything is totally dry.
