soonerguru 03-21-2021, 02:04 PM I just came back from PA (had to fly in for a funeral). Very difficult to get vaccines up there. My sister has a friend who goes on line and finds people appointments. Not sure how, nor am I asking, but as of next Tuesday, all my eligible family members will have received their first shot. Our only good news during a otherwise difficult week. They are amazed how far along we are here.
It is a miracle given how dreadfully our state leadership handled the pandemic. Perhaps due to our poor health outcomes here, we have a strong infrastructure of health facilities, with outstanding doctors and hospitals in our bigger cities. We also have 39 tribal headquarters in the state; could that be a factor, with their own robust organizations getting people shots? Surely that Is a factor.
On New York Times's tracker of vaccinations, OK is in the top 10 of states. WaPo, however, puts us down in the teens. Other states that were behind us are catching up and passing us now.
It will be interesting to see how we continue to progress once we get past the first wave of people who are eager to get the vaccine. As Pete suggested upthread, our advantage as a state may start to fall behind as we encounter a greater than average resistance to getting the vaccine here than in other states.
Here's hoping we keep it up.
Bill Robertson 03-21-2021, 05:22 PM Two and a half days since wife's second shot. Arm soreness is all but gone. She just said that she's felt tired all weekend but I'm not sure that might have been her trying to get me to pamper her. LOL!!!!!
Mine is Wednesday!

Congrats, Bill! Happy for both of you!

So I wonder what that means for the people with appts - are things going to turn messy? Hate to get there super-early and wait in the car until my 1:30 appointment, but also don't want to leave and allow just enough time to get there and find out there's a massive traffic jam...

Just went to KOCO"s website and their story there said walk-ins are from 1-4 today, 2000 out of 10,000 appts were unfilled.

This is not a good sign.
DowntownMan 03-22-2021, 01:02 PM This is not a good sign.
It could just be that supply is equaling demand where people can to smaller places such as local pharmacies and stores to get them now so why deal with going to the mass distribution spot.
Just one way to look at it
Bill Robertson 03-22-2021, 01:10 PM This is not a good sign.
Maybe if the 2000 don't get filled up. I bet that won't happen. From reading posts on various sites since November it sounds like some people were getting so frustrated trying to get an appointment that they were giving up at least until later. A few "we have more shots than people" stories could give the frustrated people hope.
kukblue1 03-22-2021, 01:38 PM Time to open it up to everyone. Arizona just did.
TheTravellers 03-22-2021, 02:19 PM Got there and the line for those with appointments just kept moving, was in and out in about 20 mins. They had a separate line for walk-ins and it was looooong and not moving since they had to get all the personal info that those of us with appts had already input into the system. Very efficient, much kudos to IMMY for doing a great job!

Honestly, it IS pretty much open to everyone. I'm phase 3 and got a head start signing up before it went public. No one is being turned away from a shot at this stage (kids being the obvious exception.) I've had friends concerned about whether they qualify, and honestly, if you can get it, GET IT. Phase 3 is so vague...if you breathe, you qualify. Just prove you are you. Even all the paperwork they ask you to fill out and bring to the site was basically ignored.
And for those who are in the "I'll wait until it's my turn" camp....it's your turn. I do think there is some hesitation for some, thinking you are taking someone's spot. It's everywhere now.
My parents are in the clear, my gf's parents are in the clear, and she and I will be in the clear in April. Can't wait.
Long time lurker, finally got the nerve to register.

Welcome to the show. I'm phase 4, think I should go?

Good question. I'm an anal stickler for adhering to rules. But. There were 2 notices today of pods taking walk-ins due to appointments not being filled. Maybe it's time to just open up and get as many people vaccinated as possible, damn the phases.
kukblue1 03-22-2021, 08:27 PM Is there a problem with having Immy labs where you have to sign up and the OSDH web site where they tell you to sign up . If your not really paying attention to things I could see how some might not even know about Immy labs and how to sign up. They might just be looking on the OSDH site and not else where?

Regardless of whether or not you have internet access there have been pieces on all the local news sources on means of finding a vaccine source outside of the OSDH portal. If you haven't seen alternatives you're literally completely out of touch with the world.

Excellent first post. Welcome!

Go. Do it. It's scary to think IMMY may have to dispose of vaccine because not enough folks showed up. Go get your shot.

You would be surprised with how many people are out of touch with the world. Trust me I worked with the public for the longest time until covid hit.
mkjeeves 03-23-2021, 08:29 AM I understand they are doing walk-ins in Amarillo too. The fairgrounds here seems like the best place to do that, if that happens as a regular option.
SEMIweather 03-23-2021, 09:46 AM Feels like it would be a good idea in a month or two for OCCHD to set up shop in some of the larger church parking lots on Sundays. Anything to make it as convenient as possible for people.
Also an FYI - still 500+ appointments open on VaxOKC.com for Moderna at Star-Spencer High School next Monday.
PoliSciGuy 03-23-2021, 10:22 AM !!! BREAKING: All Oklahomans will become eligible for COVID vaccination through the state starting Monday, March 29th, Deputy Commissioner of Health Keith Reed says.

FighttheGoodFight 03-23-2021, 10:51 AM Sounds like they will also start planning some mobile walk in vaccine sites across the state. Target areas with low vaccination rates or people who don’t want to try to make an appointment.
soonerguru 03-23-2021, 02:19 PM Outstanding news. Perhaps there were many situations like the IMMY event with open slots and the state decided to fling open the doors.
My doctor said today that Oklahoma is getting 250,000 doses a week right now, which is f-n amazing. It seems likely that anyone who actually wants a shot will get one by the end of next month at that rate.
So now we will soon find out how many stragglers / conspiracists / hesitants there are in Oklahoma.
RYSOONER1 03-23-2021, 06:08 PM Heard something on the evening news Monday, but didn't catch all of the story. It was something about a OKC lab that was now testing for personal efficacy of their vaccine. Anyone have any details about this? I am high risk for serious disease, so I would be very interested in getting tested.

Not necessarily
soonerguru 03-23-2021, 09:15 PM Not necessarily
Once we get north of 60% of eligible adults, we will soon know how many are hesitant to get the vaccine. Pretty self-evident, right?
OKCbyTRANSFER 03-23-2021, 11:39 PM I've had 4 in my circle today who say they won't take the shot for xxx reason. One doesn't have time, 1 is too afraid, 1 antivaxer and the last, b/c his friends told him all the horrible stories about taking it, the illness and death after vaccination. Like WTH?!
oklip955 03-24-2021, 07:16 AM I am probably going to be one of those who doesn't get the shots. Why, because after a shot a few years ago I am still dealing with neurological side effects that went from an unbearable living night mare to tolerable over a number of years. My doctor is very hesitant to even prescribe anything for me. I had to go to Mayo Clinic over this. For me it is not a .... but a true health issue. I'm guessing there are a few other people for various reasons health wise that cannot receive the shot/shots.
FighttheGoodFight 03-24-2021, 08:59 AM Another anecdotal vaccine experience. Pfizer shot with no side effects for me. Soreish arm. In my 30s.

Mine too, except I'm in my 50s. Wife had Moderna, same age, no side effects. Second shingles shot had us achy/tired for a day, was worse than the COVID vaccines. From what I've seen, it's the 2nd COVID shot that has more side effects than the first, though.
runOKC 03-24-2021, 09:38 AM There are millions and millions of people around the world who have been vaccinated and are fine. You can’t let the one or two stories you hear scare you. Are you never going to get on a plane again, or drive a car?
soonerguru 03-24-2021, 09:49 AM I imagine the pollutants one inhales wandering around a large city are worse for your body than anything in the vaccine.

I should clarify. This was my second shot of Pfizer. No side effects with either. Ez pz.
Bill Robertson 03-24-2021, 10:16 AM About to head to Purcell for Moderna round 2!
Got my 2nd Moderna shot this morning in Kingfisher. They had a very small operation at their Dept. of Health office and were very nice and efficient.
For those of you using the OSDH portal, I never did receive a reminder or invitation to schedule my 2nd round.
I waited until about a week before the 28-day interval and then re-registered and scheduled through them once I got my email notice. I'm glad I didn't wait for them to email me under my first registration because it never happened.
As with anything regarding your own healthcare, it's always wise to be aggressively proactive.
Sooooo relieved to have this done. Feel fine so far but anticipate some side effects over the next couple of days.
Bill Robertson 03-24-2021, 01:48 PM Got home from Purcell. Stopped on the way at Mickey D's. Not really COVID related but hadn't had a simple cheeseburger & fries in quite a while. Came home and planted some plants I had bought. Took my temp just for grins and it was 97.8. About my normal.
DowntownMan 03-24-2021, 03:36 PM Another 10k dose day at fairgrounds scheduled for the 31st. I wish they would do those well into the evening and not end at 5. I think that would encourage people who might not be able to get off work to come make appointments

For those who have had the 2nd dose...
How long after receiving the shot before you started to feel side effects (if you did other than a sore arm) such as fever, chills, aches, etc.?
It's been 7 hours since I had my 2nd Moderna shot and so far, I feel completely fine.

48 hours after Pfizer second dose and nothing.
Mother had moderna with nothing but a sore arm. In her 60s.

It's been 7 hours since I had my 2nd Moderna shot and so far, I feel completely fine.I had my 2nd Moderna at 11 this morning. So far not even the sore/swollen arm I had almost immediately the first time. I have the tiniest bit of a headache. Or not. It could be my imagination. And I feel hot and sweaty but I've taken my temp a couple times and it's fine.
mkjeeves 03-24-2021, 07:19 PM I had my second moderna shot at 10:30 am on a Friday morning. Just soreness primarily on Friday, but I went home and did physical activity the rest of the day. I did not have severe effects at all, but Saturday felt generally aches, headache when I got up through having my normal tylonal and coffee. Then felt better but didn't do anything the rest of the day. I could have, it wasn't debilitating to me like it was to some. I just wasn't feeling great. I was fine on Sunday.

I had a sore arm after my second Pfizer shot that was gone in less than a day.

Did you have any side effects from the 2nd Moderna? I'm getting my 2nd shot tomorrow. I'm overweight/obese myself but in good health otherwise but didn't have any effects from the first dose, it just made me sleepy.
Bill Robertson 03-25-2021, 07:05 AM 20 hours since Moderna #2. Arm is now a bit sore and swollen right around injection site. But not bad at all. Might be a little bit achy but hell that's hard to tell. Lots of stuff normally aches. Other than that I feel 100% fine.

I wasn't affected much after the first shot.
But last night about 3AM I got some good chills, aches and a headache. I took some Tylenol and that helped. My arm is crazy sore and we'll see what the rest of today brings. That was about 17 hours after my 2nd Moderna shot.
DowntownMan 03-26-2021, 08:37 AM If anyone is looking for the J&J shot. Ou has it open to general public in norman campus today. Lots of spots left from like 4-8 this evening
http://covidvaccine.ou.edu/OUNormanVaccine
So, as I mentioned upthread, I had my 2nd Moderna shot 10AM Wed.
I was fine until about 3AM that night where I had some chills and aches.
Yesterday, was achy and low-energy; nothing terrible, I just took it easy and went to bed early.
After a good night's sleep, today I feel almost 100%. Even my arm soreness is largely gone.
So incredibly glad to get this over with and am looking forward to going out to restaurants and seeing my family (they are almost all fully vaxxed as well) for the first time in about a year.
Bill Robertson 03-26-2021, 09:19 AM ^
I was pretty tired yesterday too. Slept like a rock last night. Arm is down to a small lump kind of like a mosquito bite that's only tender if I touch it. I would this regularly with no qualms if necessary.
kukblue1 03-26-2021, 10:12 AM Reading some stories about fully vaccinated people catching covid and sound very good. I think it was a story out of Minnesota where no one was put into the hospital. That being said I know personally 5 people ranging from age 35-50 that under no circumstances will get the shot. There about about 3.2 million adults in Oklahoma. I think (not sure where we are at now) but if we can hit 2 million I think that we done good?
dankrutka 03-26-2021, 10:35 AM Reading some stories about fully vaccinated people catching covid and sound very good. I think it was a story out of Minnesota where no one was put into the hospital.
Yes, a small percentage of vaccinated people will still get COVID. This is expected. These are called "breakthrough" cases. Fortunately, the cases are rare and the cases are more mild as antibodies still prevent the worst outcomes (i.e., hospitalization, death).
Jersey Boss 03-26-2021, 10:40 AM Rutgers University today said that students in the fall will be required to have been vaccinated.
oklip955 03-26-2021, 11:26 AM I posted in the main covid in okc post. Minn. is finding a fairly large number of these with the UK varient. I fair number are being hospitalized. I forget which of the Twin cities news sites I saw this on, either the Pioneer press or one of the tv stations a few days ago.
oklip955 03-26-2021, 11:27 AM I think it was something like 48 people hospitalized for UK variant that were fully vaccinated.
