A tribute to David Prowse

https://cnet2.cbsistatic.com/img/kuPuFgs3aIbAzK7wFvBhCQ0YnU8=/940x0/2020/11/29/1c74a873-788b-4113-93a6-a4480d3db0a2/prowse3.jpg
David Prowse, who played Darth Vader in the original Star Wars movies, has died at 85 following a short illness, the actor's family and management team confirmed on Saturday evening. Prowse's death is "a truly and deeply heart-wrenching loss for us and millions of fans all over the world," his agent Thomas Bowington told the BBC.

Prowse was best known for his role as Darth Vader in the original Star Wars film trilogy that included A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi. Legend has it Prowse was given alternate lines to say in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi so the big reveal in the movies would be kept secret. But because of his prominent UK accent, his voice was considered unsuitable for the part of the intimidating sci-fi villain, so his dialog was dubbed over by the voice of actor James Earl Jones.

I had a random recollection yesterday morning, before I heard of Charley Pride passing:

In the early 1980s there were a chain of music stores called Sound Warehouse. I remember they were OKC based and had dozens of stores in the central US. Their owner was Dan Moran, as I recall. Dan Moran was killed in a car crash on the way to Will Rogers airport around 1982ish. Moran had told someone that he wanted 2 songs played at his funeral (I think it was just one of those observations in conversation), Danny Boy and Red River Valley. A record company executive for the central US knew Moran, and Charley Pride was on one of this person’s labels. Pride came to the funeral at All Souls Episcopal Church and sang.

Pride later said he never met Moran, but felt that Moran and he had helped each other prosper, so he was willing to sing when asked.

Deb, that story is true. The other side of that story is another member of the entourage forgot his guitar, left it in Nashville or L.A. or wherever. My dad, who was a dear friend of Dan Moran's, drove the record producer to Larson Music an hour before the funeral and waited out front as he went inside and bought a new one.

What I remember about that day is my parents had to miss my second grade play. Of course in later years I came to understand. The Morans were and still are amazing people.

When it comes to free speech, it is not the friendly diplomats but rather the harsh provocateurs like Larry Flynt who test the boundaries of expression, preserving our rights in the process.

In the 1988 landmark case of Hustler Magazine v. Falwell, the Supreme Court reaffirmed and expanded the “actual malice” precedent set forth in 1964’s New York Times v. Sullivan, and Flynt’s win marked a historic leap forward in the progression of First Amendment civil rights.

Absolutely agree. Not only was he a leader in protecting free speech, he was opposed to the death penalty advocating against executing the person that shot him leaving him in a wheelchair. "This nation is bent on executing people and it's hard to get people who feel that way to be rational about anything. But you have to understand that most people are not after justice but after vengeance – and vengeance is wrong."

100%.

20 years or so ago my little sister got into a major fight with UCO over them pulling her artwork from an art exhibit (you can read all about it if you can find those old gazette articles - she was on the cover gagged and dressed as the Statue of Liberty). At the time I couldn't understand why she had chosen such provocative pieces to display in Edmond, of all places (and this stuff was pretty... explicit). She tried hard to explain this very concept to me, and at the time I didn't really get it.

Since then, I've been involved in my own fights and causes in protecting free speech, through my work with SoonerCon and in the comic book industry. But I've always remembered this lesson, and Flynt is absolutely the best example of this in modern times.

As I remember it happened on a Saturday afternoon about 3 O'clock. The fairgrounds used to be more wooded around the perimeter without any fencing, and the shooter was able to drive his car into that area and, apparently, wait for an interracial couple to become visible.

Devastated to hear yesterday that Norm Macdonald died after a 9 year battle with cancer. He fought it to a draw.

To me, Norm was easily the best comedian of our time, not only because he was entirely original and unique, but also because of his philosophy of comedy—that jokes should surprise the audience, but should not pander to them or be done for claps. He had an ability to pull off the most unexpected and difficult jokes. If you haven’t seen it, watch his legendary Moth joke he did on Conan. (https://youtu.be/YxD3pT8C9-A)
It is the quintessential Shaggy Dog joke, something only the most talented comedy minds can pull off.

I’d also recommend watching his roast of Bob Saget. Again, it’s legendary, but for different reasons. If you have ever watched these roasts, you know most of the jokes are meant to shock and include a lot of vulgarity. That’s partly because the producers instruct the comedians to do that before the show. Norm was famously not a fan of roasts because of the shock value and meanness, but he did it because Bob was one of his best friends. He intentionally “bombed”—that is, he told jokes most people would call dad jokes—and it was beautiful. During the other comedians’ sets, he was very visibly reading the paper, and the host called him out on it. He said, “Sorry, I wanted to see something funny, so I’m reading Marmaduke.” He destroyed everyone on that stage. It was amazing.

I never met either Jude or Jody but my dad (also R.I.P.) knew them pretty well as a young man and so just from his stories I can fill in a lot that is left blank in this KOCO story. It mentions that they played together in a band starting in the fifties and then started a furniture company in the sixties, which sounds sort of random. But the story is that they worked together in the furniture business long before starting the furniture store.

Pretty much every local furniture dealer of the past 50-60 years was started by people who had worked at a company called Big Red Furniture. Their warehouse was on south Western in some of the buildings that were most recently part of Urban Farmhouse. It also later became the location of Mathis Brothers. My dad worked at Big Red also, and in fact his older cousin Ralph was the General Manager. Ultimately Big Red became Evans Furniture, though I am unclear whether it was bought by the Evans family or they already had owned it and changed the name. I do know Evans had been in the furniture and appliance business in OKC since the 1940s.

But Big Red/Evans salesmen/employees included Jude and Jody, Bob Mills, plus the original Mathis Brothers; not Bill and Larry, as many might think, but Bud and Don (Bill and Larry's father). I think there were other known furniture names that came out of this, but don't recall off the top of my head.

Anyway, the story I'm trying to tell is that according to my dad, Jude and Jody's band was VERY popular, and that the entire crew would go to dances every Saturday at the nearby Farmer's Market building.

Willa D. Johnson, our long beloved, Oklahoma City pioneer and leader who became the first Black woman elected to the Oklahoma City Council, has died at age 83.

Willa Johnson started her career as a civilian employee at Tinker Air Force Base where she served her country for 20 years. Johnson was elected as the Ward 7 City Councilmember in 1993; she held the position until 2007.

She was involved in the passage of the original 1993 MAPS sales tax to fund downtown development and the MAPS for Kids extension, which rebuilt Douglass High School at its original NE 8 and Martin Luther King location.

She went on to serve as Oklahoma County Commissioner for District 1, representing an area that included Del City, Forrest Park, Jones, Lake Aluma, Luther, Midwest City, Oklahoma City and Spencer. She was re-elected to the position in 2010 and 2014.

Many awards and honors were bestowed for her public service including induction into the African American Hall of Fame, an Honorary Doctorate from Oklahoma City University and her portrait among other African Americans of stature now on display at the Oklahoma History Center.

The Willa D. Johnson Recreation Center, a new recreation center under construction in Northeast Oklahoma City’s Douglass Park Center, is named in her honor.

Funeral arrangements by the family are pending...

During my time as a board member and then director of the Automobile Alley Main Street Program we had no greater champion at the City than Willa. I spent a lot of time around her then, and not sure I’ve respected anyone I’ve dealt with in city government more than her. Also dealt with her a considerable amount related to Bricktown projects, and this only strengthened my respect for her. It’s probably been about 5 years since I’ve chatted with her, and I truly regret that. She is someone who inspired me greatly.

Lamont Dozier, the middle name of the celebrated Holland-Dozier-Holland team that wrote and produced 'You Can’t Hurry Love,' 'Heat Wave' and dozens of other hits and helped make Motown an essential record company of the 1960s and beyond, has died at age 81.

In Motown’s historic, self-defined rise to the 'Sound of Young America,' Holland-Dozier-Holland stood out even compared to such gifted peers as Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder and Barrett Strong. Over a four-year period, 1963-67, Dozier and brothers Brian and Eddie Holland crafted more than 25 top 10 songs and mastered the blend of pop and rhythm and blues that allowed the Detroit label, and founder Berry Gordy, to defy boundaries between Black and white music and rival the Beatles on the airwaves.

LONDON (AP) — Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest-reigning monarch and a rock of stability across much of a turbulent century, has died. She was 96.

Buckingham Palace made the announcement in a statement.

A link to the almost-vanished generation that fought World War II, she was the only monarch most Britons have ever known, and her name defines an age: the modern Elizabethan Era. The impact of her loss will be huge, and unpredictable, both for the nation and for the monarchy, an institution she helped stabilize and modernize across decades of huge social change and family scandals.

With the death of the queen, her son Charles, automatically becomes monarch, even though the coronation might not take place for months. It is not known whether he will choose to call himself King Charles III or some other name.

Dang! I greatly enjoyed Gallaghers videos. He had great comedy as well as a very intelligent lookout on life and it's situations.

OMG, can't believe so many of the comedians I grew up watching are checking out of this world. Saddens my heart. RIP Gallagher.

Wife #1 and I saw Gallagher twice. The second time we had front row seats and wore clear ponchos that were put on the seats of the first 5 or 6 rows. I thought he was a brilliant comedian with a completely unique act.

My little sister wore out several VHS recordings of the movie FLASHDANCE growing up. She would dance in front of the TV, etc.
