BoulderSooner 11-11-2020, 09:13 AM And the thunder has a HC. Mark Daigneault
Bill Robertson 11-11-2020, 09:20 AM I think this is a fine choice. This team is likely to not be very good for awhile. A first time head coach promoted from within won't have the expectations placed on him that an established coach might have. So his career shouldn't be derailed if everything flops and will look really good if things go well.

Anonymous. 11-11-2020, 10:46 AM The next two weeks are going to be insane with NBA news.
kevin lee 11-11-2020, 03:42 PM I really really wanted Becky Hammon but hopefully this ends well.
SoonersFan12 11-11-2020, 03:50 PM I really really wanted Becky Hammon but hopefully this ends well.
I hope you really really want Hammon because you think she deserves a chance, not because you want to drool on her

You forgot Thunder made the playoffs last year? They will be good as long they keep their current roster
dankrutka 11-11-2020, 03:54 PM Daigneault will likely be a fine coach, but the Thunder have now had 4 white coaches in their history in a league that has 75% Black players and Black coaches with Daigneault or Nash's resumes don't slide right into head coaching jobs. There are a wealth of Black coaching candidates that never get opportunities. I really liked Charles Lee of the Bucks. Again, not saying Daigneault isn't deserving, I'm just saying that white management and GMs like Presti seem to hold the door open wider for white coaches.
SoonersFan12 11-11-2020, 03:54 PM I am not a Thunder fan but good luck with your new head coach, it is a interesting hire
kevin lee 11-11-2020, 05:23 PM I hope you really really want Hammon because you think she deserves a chance, not because you want to drool on her
Lol no I learned my lesson about 10 years ago with Sherri Coale. It's strictly professional this time.
Bill Robertson 11-11-2020, 06:07 PM You forgot Thunder made the playoffs last year? They will be good as long they keep their current rosterChances of keeping Chris Paul are not very high. And that or other trade packages could lose some more of the current roster. If they are in full rebuild mode which appears to be the case they won't be making the playoffs again for a while.
Bill Robertson 11-11-2020, 06:15 PM I really really wanted Becky Hammon but hopefully this ends well.
I kind of wanted Hammon or maybe Nancy Lieberman. We're not likely to be good for a while and we could have made history by giving a woman coach a chance. And I think either of them just might be a pretty good coach in the right circumstances.
SoonersFan12 11-11-2020, 07:52 PM Westbrook wants out so who wants him back?
SouthOfTheVillage 11-11-2020, 07:57 PM Daigneault will likely be a fine coach, but the Thunder have now had 4 white coaches in their history in a league that has 75% Black players and Black coaches with Daigneault or Nash's resumes don't slide right into head coaching jobs. The Coach after Daignault will very likely be a diversity hire.
As for Daignault, we just need him to be an able Tank Commander for the next several years. Nothing flashy, keep Shai happy and rack up big losses.
Bill Robertson 11-12-2020, 05:43 AM Westbrook wants out so who wants him back?
I don't really know what I would feel about Westbrook come back. Probably doesn't matter because if the Thunder are really intending to rebuild for the future through the draft they don't want a star player on the roster.

With the size of his contract in his final year, the fact that the trade would have to be for someone with a similar size contract and his age, a trade is unlikely.

paul for rubio and oubre works ... i'm sure presti would want a pick back as well ..
Jersey Boss 11-12-2020, 08:58 AM Westbrook wants out so who wants him back?
Lol, not with a 35 year old rookie coach. The team chemistry was improved last year because he was not on the roster.
sooner88 11-12-2020, 08:59 AM They've sent out the guidelines for the Thunder this season:
- Minimum of three seats separating each seating pod (not sure how that's defined)
- No seats directly in front or behind any seating pod
- Seat barriers in unassigned seats
- Fans within 30 feet of court need to register a negative test 2 days prior or day of with a rapid test
dankrutka 11-12-2020, 09:42 AM The Coach after Daignault will very likely be a diversity hire.
Black head coaching candidates are not "diversity hires." In most cases, they're more qualified candidates. I believe Charles Lee had a better resume and more upside than Daignault.
With the size of his contract in his final year, the fact that the trade would have to be for someone with a similar size contract and his age, a trade is unlikely.
A Chris Paul trade is likely. Reports suggest that the Phoenix trade is more likely than not, but there will be other suitors too. I would think the Thunder would try to re-route Rubio and maybe even Oubre if they're in the trade. I'd say a three team trade is very possible. I expect CP3, Gallo (maybe by sign and trade), and maybe Schroeder or Adams gone soon.
And, no, zero interest in bringing Westbrook back. He's going to get his statue and be a Thunder legend, but there's really no point in bringing him back. The Thunder should lose this year and let the young guys develop while the West is so tough.
Anonymous. 11-12-2020, 09:57 AM Yes, Warriors will be back, Portland will be healthy, and the Suns will [likely] be better. OKC should work on getting our untouchables (Shai, Dort, Bazley) in top NBA shape.
Schroeder will be a great mentor in place of CP3.

Reality is though if Kyrie and or Kevin did not want Nash he would not have been hired.

Assuming it's the same as OU football a pod is your "family" or regular attendance group. I believe they were limited to six people in your "family" pod.

Thanks for the clarification, I assumed that's what it meant but wasn't sure what number they would limit it to. They've reached out to the season ticket holders gauging their interest in attending this season with the option of opting out and keeping your seats for next season, so hopefully we'll know soon what the realistic amount of games each "pod" will be able to attend.

I don’t expect Schroeder back either. This is a perfect season for OKC to bottom out. The West is stacked and so is the 2021 draft. But it’ll still be fun to see the young three develop.
Perfect time to bottom out when not a lot of people will be allowed at the games anyway.

I wonder how long this will last with cases now surging? A lot different from a summer NBA bubble that's for sure. At least football games are outside.

I'm curious to see how many people actually opt-in. We're on the fence, but not really excited to spend thousands to potentially expose ourselves and others.

We opted out this past summer. Too much uncertainty so after 9 years Club level we gave it up. Once the vaccine has been applied we will pick and choose games.

good luck with the phone calls if you decide you completely drop your tickets. i did that. and finally had to ask for a manager because they still kept calling me every single week even after i told them to stop calling me

I opted out and they paid me the 8 games that were not played. Other than their organizational emails I haven't heard a work.

And it's likely that the Thunder will flip Danny Green. The tear down has begun. We're going to be bad for a few seasons, but this is the right time to do it and it can be fun watching these young guys without any expectations.

They already agreed to a trade and as a Magic fan, I am glad Dennis is gone, he has always killed my Magic, I am guessing Paul is next to be traded?

Who goes next is a guessing game. Does Paul have the clout to say " I'll only go to a contender".?
SEMIweather 11-15-2020, 11:14 AM Really good time to tank and rebuild given that there's definitely going to be limited attendance next season, and possibly for the start of the 2021-22 season as well.
dankrutka 11-15-2020, 11:30 AM Who goes next is a guessing game. Does Paul have the clout to say " I'll only go to a contender".?
No, he doesn't. The Thunder might listen to his input, but the Suns—who are not contenders—are rumored now. Presti will do what's best for the Thunder.
I'd guess we hear about a CP3 trade this week. Possibly a Gallo sign and trade. Outside chance Adams is dealt, but probably not. There's going to be a lot of action this week.

So they should hire a coach that’s black, just because that person is black? How about they hire whoever they think the best candidate is regardless of skin color?

I honestly have no idea whether he is or not, but making the hiring process about race is just unnecessary and that was the point of my post.

I agree with you that the hiring process shouldn't be about race. I also agree with Dan that it has been for many years up to the present.

The first coach of a team in OKC was Byron Scott and that was 15 years ago. I’m sorry but no, it has not been about race for several decades now. Just because someone hires a white coach does not mean that they intentionally overlooked minority candidates because of the color of their skin. That was definitely happening previously in the NBA...no doubt about it, but that is not how it works in 2020 and hasn’t been for a very long time now.
SEMIweather 11-15-2020, 02:05 PM Daigneault is a fine hire for what the Thunder are looking to accomplish in the next 2-4 years. He was coach of the g-league team for five seasons so this is clearly about promoting someone who is familiar with the organization and has a lot of experience working with young players. If he turns out to be a good coach at this level, great. Otherwise, I expect that the Thunder will move on and hire someone more experienced whenever their next contending window opens up. That'll be the hire that's important to get correct.
OKCretro 11-15-2020, 02:19 PM Presti didnt hire Hammon because he didnt want her to take on all the loses during the rebuild for the next 4 years.
Dob Hooligan 11-15-2020, 02:32 PM No, he doesn't. The Thunder might listen to his input, but the Suns—who are not contenders—are rumored now. Presti will do what's best for the Thunder.

Okay, so how much is the salary floor this year? I mean as a percentage. 80-85%? The Thunder still gotta spend a lot of money every year, and they aren’t going to take back any contract that runs longer than this year in a trade IMO.
I think “The Process” ultimately showed that in today’s NBA tanking has become much more short term and risky. The Sixers spent 3 of the years harming road attendance, food & beverage, and national TV ratings on an effort that didn’t get them closer than the second round? I think the days of the 25% wining percentage as part of a tank job are gone. At least with competent management, and I think Sam Presti is the best in the NBA. I don’t think our winning percentage is gonna get below 40-45 this, or any other year.
As far as Chris Paul having control of where he goes, I am totally convinced he does. He is the president of the player’s union, a man who can call Adam Silver, Michelle Roberts, or Barack Obama and they will take the call live. There is no gain the the Thunder from antagonizing him.

To be fair to Hinkie, we never really got a chance to see what the Process would have looked like had he been allowed to see it to completion. The NBA forced him out and then the Sixers made a series of terrible front office hires that really messed up their chances for long-term success. We'll see if Morey can turn it around there.
I don't think the Thunder will ever have 60-70 loss seasons like the Sixers did for a few years in a row, both because SGA is better than anyone the Sixers ever had during the "Process" years and also because the Thunder aren't quite as incentivized to tank due to the fact that so many of their picks are coming from the Clippers and Rockets. But I think it does ultimately make sense to shed salary and opt for a youth movement over the next few years. I'd expect the Thunder to win about 25-30 games over the next three seasons (or whatever the equivalent of that is in this slightly shorter upcoming season).
dankrutka 11-15-2020, 04:31 PM First, no one said the Thunder are going to approach this the exact same way that Hinkie did in Philly, but they are going to lose this season, on purpose. Getting a high draft pick is still the best route to contention for OKC. Besides, the Process netted the 76ers two all-stars and contention. It certainly didn't fail despite the process being cut short and undermined since Hinkie left.
The only way Chris Paul will have input on his trade destination is if it also is in the interest of the Thunder. Presti will work with CP3, but he won't pursue trades that aren't good for the Thunder. Presti "worked with" Westbrook, but he only did the trade because it was incredible deal for OKC. Saying CP3's role as player rep means he'll get to choose his destination is pretty much a conspiracy theory. There's no evidence to support it.
Dob Hooligan 11-15-2020, 06:33 PM I think the most collaborative sports league between players and management in North America is the NBA, and the Thunder is near the top in collaboration in the NBA. The headline I read in NBC Sports Pro Basketball Talk on 11-12-2020 was “Thunder give Chris Paul permission to work out Suns trade”. A 35 year old player who is due over $40 million a year for the next 2 years is next to impossible to trade in a good economy, and this ain’t a good economy. Because Chris Paul is the President of the NBAPA, he will have full knowledge of all terms of any trade and cannot agree to any trade that is not at least “neutral”. Forcing Chris Paul into a trade that he doesn’t agree to benefits nobody. He doesn’t have a no trade clause on paper, but he might as well have, and the Thunder knew that when they traded for him last season.

Almost none of this is true. The Thunder can trade Chris Paul without saying one word to him because he signed a contract. He literally has no legal say. And trading Chris Paul to somewhere is doesn't want to go—remember OKC was very much perceived as such a place when he was traded—could very well benefit the Thunder the most. I promise you that if the Cleveland Cavaliers offered the Thunder 3 first round picks Presti would approve that trade without thinking about it twice.
I think the Thunder would love to find a great trade for CP3 and themselves, but there's no question the latter is the only one that ultimately matters to Presti's decision-making.
Also, I think you're overstating the economic issue with CP3's huge salary. You have to match salary fairly closely in NBA trades. If the Thunder send out money then similar money will come in. In fact, that's why there are only some teams OKC can trade with.
