Both teams are struggling, Cleveland has lost 9 straight and the Thunder have dropped their last 3 games. Should be a good match up. Key players out are George Hill (Thunder) and Kevin Love (Cavaliers).

Not really understanding the thunder right now. Even the knicks and nets are going to start letting people inside the arena to watch nba games.
Did the Thunder ever come out and really explain there decision? where they waiting for a state mask mandate or the numbers to go way down?

Seems odd still no fans

Want to also give Coach Mark Daigneault credit for how he manages/rotates players available. We seem to have a reliable vet in Al Horford with George Hill in recovery and rehab from surgery. Horford is patient, he knows he has to make the inexperienced players around him better. Really excited about the future.

Also, let's get The Peake ready (MAPS 4) for fans.

I can kind of see it and a little surprised given our Covid numbers. Second half of the season has 18 maybe 19 home games. If you only going to allow 3,000 people and 9,000 people have season tickets. Than each season ticket member is only going to be able to go to 6 games? Even if that number is half 9 games. If anything they should start the renovations now though instead of waiting until this summer.

renovations won't start this summer either ..

and with the current OKC rules they could have 25% so 4,500 or so and they already identified those people if you had tickets you would get to go to every game (others either opted for partial season or just fully opted out this year)

the Dallas Mavs will be allowed to have a full arena starting next week .

I read somewhere that this year the road team is winning more than usual. Many attribute that to no fans i.e. less of a home court advantage and since we are trying to lose, having fans might = more wins.

Disappointed that Oklahoma City didn't allow some percentage of fan capacity into the arena. We usually follow what our neighboring NBA franchises are doing:

Dallas Mavericks Dallas, TX American Airlines Center Yes 1,500 (7.8%)
Houston Rockets Houston, TX Toyota Center Yes 4,500 (25%)
Memphis Grizzlies Memphis, TN FedEx Forum Yes
New Orleans Pelicans New Orleans, LA Smoothie King Center Yes 750 (4%)
Oklahoma City Thunder Oklahoma City, OK Chesapeake Energy Arena No
San Antonio Spurs San Antonio, TX AT&T Center Yes 3,200 (Starting March 12)

Well, hopefully next season...

I assume no one listened to Traber and the sports animal today otherwise this forum would of blew up. Traber of course says it was a mistake and we are taking a step back and telling people they should live in fear. I don't always agree with Traber but on this one I lean his way. I think it was a little early to say no fans. There are a lot of games in April and May (12 in total) and by then thing might be getting better. Even Broadway in New York is opening back up starting in April.

Watching the Dallas game and turned it off. Kind of upset with all this the more I think about it. Dallas fans seemed to be having a good time. Everyone had on mask everyone was social distance. I just don't see this as a high risk activity to be honest. How can Big cities like New York, and Dallas figure out how to do it but OKC can't. I'm getting my second shot in less than two weeks and I was hoping to maybe be able to go to a Thunder game and finally get out of the house and do something. Maybe I am being a little selfish.

Also why should I brother trying to watch them when I know I will never seem them play in person. I always knew we were not going to be good this morning but was willing to go to see some of our young guys play in person. Now that I know that will never happen what is really the point of watching it on TV every night?

I really doubt the fans decision was because of Covid, more along the lines if it made sense financially. If they were restricting enough, I could see them not being profitable.

If the team was better, they would be letting fans in. This is the perfect season to be in a rebuild because in-person fans won't be missing a playoff run which has made for some very memorable springs around here! I miss those days. Hopefully though, when we are ready to make some deep runs again, all will be back to normal and the arena will be rockin' once again on those late April, May and hopefully June nights in the future!

Definitely need to avoid that then! We've got to keep our competitive (dis)advantage to get this top 5 pick!

i bet a lot of fans will be done .... but as rover said that is money they are not getting in the future

lol. Why?

To the other questions, no, fans aren't being charged for games they didn't attend. If OKC loses any season ticket holders it's more likely going to be due to economic issues or that the team will be losing for the next couple years.

BoulderSooner
03-04-2021, 02:29 PM

because they are choosing not to allow fans (not allowing loyal season ticket holders to go to games or resell their tickets during this season)

i know of several people that are getting the full cash refund and no longer plan to be season ticket holders .

Doubt if you'll see any fans leaving that will amount to anything. This franchise has a waiting list; they're on a sellout streak dating back to 2010.

Recognize this team is in a reboot stage. We all hoped that a limited capacity could be achieved. Looking forward to next season.

The Last few years There were lots of pairs of seats that the Thunder were unable to sell as season tickets.

To the best of my recollection, season ticketholders (I'm one of them) weren't give the option of a full cash refund, just options of opting in to full or partial season tickets (when it was believed there would be fans in the stands), or opting out of the season altogether. Either of those options meant any money already received by the Thunder would be rolled over into the next season's tickets.

The Thunder normally have renewal deadlines for the next season in March, while the season is still going on, and that happened this year, but the Thunder postponed taking any money until the summer, then stopped it again in late fall when they made the decision to not allow fans, and any money still due on your account will need to be paid off by April, i believe.

I know of no options for receiving refunds or opting out altogether as a season ticketholder, unless it was something that was worked out individually between the ticketholder and Thunder ticket representative.

I have ZERO inside knowledge, but I am convinced there is a financial component to the "No fans this season" decision. Might be a clause in an insurance policy, lease, TV contract, league assistance package, some tax benefit, or something else. But, I'm convinced there's some $$ benefet on the net net.

Easier to tank and trade assets when there’s no one in the stands to watch the losing.

It could also just be that someone in the Thunder's ownership group (thinking Kaiser here) is adamant on not having a few thousand people in an indoor arena during a pandemic in which vaccines probably won't be widely available until the last few weeks of the regular season. In any case, if the Thunder aren't able to safely have something close to a normal game experience next season, we'll probably have much bigger things to worry about.

kukblue1
03-04-2021, 08:58 PM
For me I was hoping we could start getting back to a little bit of Normal. Opening the stadium even to only 3,000 would seem like a start. Sounds like the vaccine might be open to everyone in April. This is going to be an endemic it's probably always going to be around. Are we not going to let fans in next October when there are still cases being reported? What will the case counts have to be before we open things up again?

dankrutka
03-04-2021, 09:11 PM
The pandemic is still very bad right now. We’re at the highs of the summer. A ton of people still can’t get the vaccine yet. In three months, everyone should have access. The fall should be completely different than now.

Amazed by the tenacity the Thunder players displayed against San Antonio Spurs last night. Remember, the Spurs are going thru their own reboot under the guidance of the Spurs' Jedi Master coach Popovich.

Maybe just maybe the Thunder are looking at it like Covid is still bad. Even though the numbers are lower they are still near the highest of the second wave last summer. Maybe the fact the last March the entire NBA and all sports were shutdown due to positive test in OKC is apart of the decision.

This isn't even close to being over yet so maybe it's better to let all the other teams allow fans and maybe next season it'll be possible. Look at this way international travel is mostly shutdown due to Covid this is not over yet.

The option for full refund was available but not publicized. Basically big guy (thunder) wanting a zero percent interest loan from the small man. I called and was able to get my money back. As a season ticket holder of thunder since 2009 I’m done with thunder and NBA. Between the BLM and Lebron James politics I’ve had enough. I come to watch basketball to watch basketball not hear a multi million dollar athlete tell me how I should vote and see the world.

I have been to about 15-20 high school basketball games this year (zero in previous 10 years) and though the talent level isn’t the same it has been a breath of fresh air to just watch basketball without all the antics.

There's always going to be fans who want Black athletes to entertain them, but don't care about the lives and rights of Black people. I mean, they were literally just arguing for due process and equality in police interactions in the face of police violence and for equal voting opportunities in the face of widespread efforts at Black voter suppression. If you can't support those two basic rights then I don't know what to say. I gained a ton of respect for the players this past year and can't wait to spend more time and money at Thunder games.
