Was there a Kip's Big Boy restaurant in the Mayfair shopping center in the 60s? I seem to remember one being in the 50th and May area perhaps on the west side? We would eat there and I remember getting a little comic book to take home. I'm thinking there was a bank too. Maybe Mayfair Bank? I'm thinking I had my first bank savings account there in the 60s as a kid.

Here is a related ugly slice of Oklahoma's past... I came across a classified ad for jobs at that location in 1960 and it specified ages 18-35 and WHITE in capital letters.

The southwest section (first photo) now has really cool up-lighting embedded in the sidewalk. I believe they have the capability to shift colors. Inside, Summer Moon, the barber and tailor spaces are all moving fast.

Looks to me that May Avenue Bank is in the same building as InterBank is now. I "think" I remember that May Avenue Bank & Trust used a MBT logo (capital M on the left and small b and t stacked on the right) which changed to UBT after the name was changed in the early 1970s?

We have an old 1965 phone book. It shows Al's Thrif-T-Wise Super Mkt at 4901 N May.

I went there when I was in high school at NW Classen to apply for a job. I graduated in 1964. I didn't get the job.

When I wrote "there" I meant Katz.

This is rank speculation on my part…. but….since Katz was the downtown drug store where the OKC civil rights sit-in was held, I’m guessing it was a drug store chain that somehow was replaced by Langsham’s in the 1960s.

I had the coffee at a Summer Moon in Round Rock and I thought it was very solid.

Empire Slice Shop has filed building permits to take the restaurant space at the west end of the section that will contain Summer Moon and the relocated barber and tailor.

This will be the same counter-service model they have opened in Nichols Hills.

Their new space will also include that large covered patio area and will benefit from the big parking lot just to the west.

The new spaces for the barber and tailor are 98% complete (signs are already installed) and they both should be moving over soon, at which time the old gas station and attached retail space will be demolished for Domino C-store and car wash.

The barber shop and tailor have made the move to their new spots next to Summer Moon and Empire and demolition equipment is onsite ready to take down the old service station and make room for Domino C-Store and carwash.

Dirt work has started where the Domino convenience store is planned to be located.

You can see the outline of both Domino C-store and its carwash to the east.

The Domino canopy will go where the old gas station is now located.

It's super nice space, as you can see. They also have their drive-thru ready to go.

Hours are 6AM to 8PM Monday-Friday; 7AM to 8PM Saturday and Sunday.

No remodel to their inside. Still looks like a 1970's TG&Y (which it was).

The one remaining section is being remodeled to match the Michael's side.

I went yesterday, and was impressed all around. The space is gorgeous, the service was fast, and the coffee was some of the best drip coffee I've ever had. First time trying oak roasted coffee.

The midnight quarter moon iced coffee was solid. Breakfast burritos not so much.

I liked the coffee a lot. Breakfast burrito was pretty good, too. Expected day-one foibles.

Remember, the east parcel will be for a car wash and that parcel has never before had improvements or utilities.

Keep waiting for that corner to be Demo. I guess waiting until the Domino is complete. its all looking so much better. and I am at Summer Moon way too often.

Mayfair = gave up on any continuity long ago. Tried to do one section with an updated look, gave up, decided to bulldoze instead. Spent too much on that first section to doze it now as well. Aw hell, just throw in whatever you want and build it as long as i get money from the thing.

There was no attempt to update the southeast section that was demolished. They merely opened up part of the facade to see what they were dealing with.

I live nearby and have watched the entire process up close. They've done a great job. Kept all the existing tenants, upgraded all of their spaces and brought new life to a center that had been dead for decades.

Summer Moon is booming, Domino will be very nice for a c-store and is needed in the area, and hard to imagine getting a better tenant than Empire.

The kitchen is actually built above the 4 drive-thru lanes, with an elevator system to send orders down to waiting vehicles. First reactions seem to be positive, it'll be interesting to see if Taco Bell/Yum! Brands - or others - expands that concept further.

Chick-fil-A near 63rd & N May uses a two lane system that doesn’t merge, though they just use delineator posts beyond the speaker boxes to keep the lanes separated.
