I was making a grammar joke about beatifying that area.
Yeah for may being one of the Premier corridors in the city it looks awful. Really, and this is an expensive proposal, is to build structured parking that has a more compact footprint allowing for may to be expanded to include turning lanes, median, and cycle lanes.

Very interesting.

To the south on the east side of May, there are medians between May and the N/S side street (similar to a frontage road) which is called Mayfair Drive. Runs from 47th to 43rd.

And on both sides of May, there are very big setbacks on both sides all the way south to 23rd and north into the Village.

I wonder if May once was designated as a state highway?

this piqued my curiosity, so i did some digging in okc.gov deed search and on usgs earth explorer. the strip of land from 43rd to 47th was originally deeded by c.b. warr for use as a park. in 1957, the city documented that use when it negotiated to take about 3.5 feet from this park to add a concrete island divider on may ave. i also found aerial imagery from 1954. the west side of may from 47th to 50th had a nearly identical park and 'frontage road'... hopefully that image makes it through bigger than postage stamp size. that park and road was gone in the 1969 aerial image you posted, but you can see the outline of it.
17281

edit: well, slightly bigger than a postage stamp. if you squint, you can just see the matching park land to the west of may.

Building permit application has been filed for Domino C-store on the SE corner of NW 50th & May.

It will include a drive-thru and a kitchen with a dining area in the NW corner. The front of the store will face 50th.

Also, from the rendering in the first image, you can see a carwash to the east which will take that old derelict parking lot and also be operated by Domino, although that is not shown on the site plan.

I'm sure Domino will be expanding more in OKC.

They are going to kill it at that location.

This is a menu from one of their existing locations:

When I lived in the area I popped into that old Shell station that was on the corner to pick up a lotto ticket on the way home. To the left of the register area was a whole area of maybe 20 crock pots that each had a different food item it in they were selling food out of. The place stunk to high heaven. But the lady that helped me was really nice. That was the one and only time I ever went in there. Like I said earlier, this Domino will be a huge upgrade to that corner.

Oddly enough, more than a few people I know really enjoyed some of the stuff in those crockpots. Always sounded weird to me.

With the aggressiveness of OnCue, 7-11, Caseys and now Domino, you have to believe that a lot of the smaller, older mix of convenience stores will continue to die off.

Generally speaking, that is not a bad thing as so many are eyesores, including the old Shell station at Mayfair.

As it would happen... The east side of May Avenue was platted in 1947, and the west side in 1949. Maps from 1952 shows May Avenue being a Route 66 Bypass route and also being S.H. 74.

This section of May was also State Hwy 3.

There's a prime corner at 36/Portland (NWC) that I'm continually surprised one of these chains hasn't picked up. Pretty high volume corner.

Demo permits have been filed for the l-shaped section of the center that is to the south of Michael's on the east side of May.

As I mentioned previously, the developer told me that section was riddled with problems which they discovered after they tore back part of the facade.

They will build back according to the deals they can strike.

Yes, they moved into a brand new space about a week ago; all new fixtures as well. Much nicer than before and that place is always busy.

They are doing asbestos abatement in their old store to prep for demolition of that section to make way for Domino.

I believe that is the former Mayfair (or maybe Central?) Presbyterian Church. The excavation is where the basement was. No project at this time IIRC. Just removal of building before it becomes a blight.

Pete, do you know if they have any specific plans for that south parcel which has now been leveled? Given how completely refreshed the front of the section being kept is, I feel like they could build a new section and match the look pretty closely if they wanted to.

They have no specific plans, just tore it down because it was a mess.

I know they are trying to work deals for this spot, as well as on the NW corner of 50th & May (which they also own) on the site of the old church.

Both parcels are prime real estate with lots of density, traffic and income all around. They are just being patient and trying to find the right fit.

Im sure the lot will be some other random thing that doesn't match. Mayfair turned from a somewhat themed concept area, to a bunch of mishmash with a small strip mall in the mix. Have to say, this entire thing ended up being a massive disappointment to me. With the prime land they had, they could have done so much more here.

It really hasn't been that appealing over the years, even with the "theme". I like the fact they're not afraid to carve out something new. I hear you, though. I'm still very encouraged by the project.

I completely agree with the threads over the years about older buildings being demolished. But I've felt loose connections to buildings and hated seeing them go. But I've never felt personally connected to a building except the Fairgrounds Speedway grandstands. But seeing the building where Otasco was gone is painful. My dad and I spent a LOT of time there. He bought everything for what we could do to the cars there and took them there for the things he didn't want to tackle. My first Daisy bb rifle came from there. My first .22 rifle came from there. I'm sure most everything in mom's kitchen came from there. I could probably go on for a long page. May SE Mayfair rest in peace.

The very southernmost store. They were the ell of the building. The auto service doors were the closest thing to May.

OKG yes!!!!! But that's part of my precious memories.

Dad was a simple printing pressman and mom didn't work outside the house until I was in first grade and she went to school to be a nurse. Yet somehow pretty much anything I really wanted I got. When I was maybe 8 I woke up Christmas morning to a Honda 50 for me and a Yamaha 125 for dad so we could ride together. I have no idea how they pulled it off. Kinda off the Otasco vibe but still connected for me as things we had then reminds me of everything from that time.

I loved walking up to Otasco when I was a kid. Also, the cafe at Langsam Drug, we would go get ice cream. Puddin' Lane, Big Daddy Rats, etc.

Weird seeing that section completely leveled, and seeing the apartments behind from May for the first time.

R.I.P. OTASCO. Even though I grew up as a kid in Wichita, we had them there too. And since my parents were both from the OKC metro they loved the place; especially Dad (also R.I.P.). Got my first bike there as a kid, Even got to ride there myself to get my bicycle inspected and licensed each year (a thing in Wichita when I was a kid). Also always got to go with Dad to shop for things like camping products and such. Great memories there.

I know it's weird but I'm incredibly sentimental...

I walk through Mayfair a few times a week, and when I saw the demo equipment show up for the SE section, I stood there for a minute, put my hand on the old building, and bid it goodbye.

Tons of people used to shop there over the decades, and lots of memories were made. I felt I needed to say goodbye for all of them.

Always makes me a bit sad to see a part of the past bulldozed. It erases important connections between people and a community.

And even though I did not grow up in a small town, every time I go through one I feel the collective pain of the universal loss of almost every old main street and for the communities in general. I can't imagine how sad it must be for those who loved towns in much more vibrant times.

Not quite RIP.... I don't know the story behind it but there is still an Otasco in Marlow (https://www.google.com/maps/@34.6476734,-97.9583941,3a,75y,173.07h,91.45t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1s22AdvGgvP16eOtyTrHt3-A!2e0!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fpanoid%3D22Ad vGgvP16eOtyTrHt3-A%26cb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile.gps%26w%3D203%26h% 3D100%26yaw%3D118.9927%26pitch%3D0%26thumbfov%3D10 0!7i16384!8i8192?hl=en).

Born in Hutchinson and spent most of my childhood in Buhler.... Whenever we hauled hogs to Wichita dad would stop and he would get Guy's pork rinds and I would get Guy's cheese puffs and we never told mom we were spending the money on something that could have been spent better elsewhere......
